We spent a day with Mr. Abu, discovering Tokyo. We went through the whole of Tokyo, we saw so much that we would never have found on our own. We got to know Tokyo through the smells, tastes, habits of the people who live in Tokyo thanks to Mr. Abu. Mr. Abu put a lot of effort into showing us all of it in one day, which seemed impossible. We had a great time discovering Tokyo with Gulay who showed us areas that we would not have found and who provided us with the historical and cultural background to understand Tokyo. Why do they have cat and otter cafes? Pets are typically not allowed in apartments. How do you show respect at the Meiji Jingu? You bow before entering the gate. Gulay gave me and my work colleague and fantastic tour of modern Tokyo. I didn’t realize it at the time but as a foreigner (albeit one that’s a professional guide that’s lived in Tokyo for years), she understands what’s interesting for us and not. A freak snow and rainstorm interrupted our tour and she rolled with punches and took us to experience a restaurant while we warmed up. We had a really good experience on our tour of Shibuya, Meiji, Shinjuku and many stops in between, with Abu, our guide for a bespoke tour with food stop at an excellent sushi restaurant in a building I have no idea how to fine again! And that’s kind of the point of doing a Withlocals tour - you can easily go to Shibuya or Shinjuku by yourself but as tourists in a strange land it really helps to have someone like Abu to guide your steps, even if you have first guided his as to where you would like to go, as we did because we have been to Tokyo before, so did not want to be taken to all of the more obvious places. It was a very hot day, so Abu was careful to include stops and frequent visits to air conditioned buildings and to make the occasional detour via a pachinko arcade or a food court to get some cool air and cut off a corner! The sushi was great, and the Sake tasting was too - even though it confirmed my already formed opinion that I just don’t like sake. Sorry Japan, sorry Abu. The walk to Meiji shrine was fun and Abu regaled us with history lessons galore. He also took some great pictures, with his own phone which he sent us and with ours too. Abu is a much better photographer than I am, so we were glad to get these. The other advantage of taking such a tour was all the side tips - a whiskey museum, an entrance to our hotel from a metro line, a metro line to Nakano Broadway that was hard to see on a map, and plenty more little snippets that made our next two days a little easier. Gulay's tour was exactly what we needed! This was my first trip to Japan, along with my 10 year old son, and I was unsure about many things, from food to how to use the metro. Our tour with Gulay was super informative, interesting, and fun. Ahead of our tour, Gulay was responsive and asked about any special needs and was flexible in adapting to a late change in our schedule. Our tour focused on Asakusa and Kappabashi starting at the beautiful Senso-ji Temple. We could have viewed it by ourselves but we would have missed so much! She explained a lot of the history and back story to how the Temple came to be there and all of the buildings that make up the whole complex including the gates, halls, five-storied pagoda, etc. She explained the stories depicted in the murals that we would have otherwise just walked past. She pointed out buildings of interest nearby and their story, then taking us down Nakamise-dori, a shopping street and then Kappabashi for knife and kitchen wares shopping which we wanted to go for great deals for gift shopping (I'm not a shopper otherwise). All this and she kept it moving and interesting, even giving us some locals treats. At the end, she helped guide us to getting to the baseball game after the tour. Abu is such a great guide. He is very knowledgeable and very kind. Abu really showed all sides of Asakusa and some other places, beginning with the market of the old city with some information about the city name and the market temples. After we got some popular and delicious local snacks which were totally not busy at the time. At the end Abu showed us the giant gaming and anime neighborhood of 10 story high game stores which was completely surreal. Abu was not in a hurry to finish the tour, on the contrary, he just wanted to show us all the places that we were interested in and took all the time to take us to there. We will definitely book Abu again if we come back!

Abu was a great guide, made our first full day in Tokyo a much better experience by explaining the history of the sights we were seeing and overall development of the area. We just completed a private tour with Kennedy this weekend, and it was fantastic. My wife and I are visiting Tokyo for a few days before starting a cruise around Japan, and we wanted to learn how to navigate the train system so we could explore on our own the next day. We also wanted to see some local favorites and hidden gems that we might not have found ourselves. Kennedy met us right at our hotel (which was next to a train station), helped us set up Suica cards, and guided us on using the trains as we toured the city. Her suggested stops were wonderful, and her knowledge of the history and culture made each place even more memorable. What really stood out was Kennedy’s warm personality and great conversation. Gulay was a joy to spend our first jet lagged morning in Tokyo. Our kids are 10 and 12 years old and she made our 3 hour tour around Asakusa interesting and enjoyable for both the kids and the adults. She taught us how to pray at two different temples, gave us some history of the area, showed us the BEST foods to try (come hungry!) and continued to text great tips after our tour. I definitely recommend a tour with her towards the beginning of your stay. She was an absolute joy to be around too. Just the right amount of calm energy we were seeking with our jet lag.
