My family of 4 had the pleasure of taking a trip to the Douro Valley with Gustavo. We began by visiting the Croft vineyard, enjoying the views, and having a quick port tonic. We meandered through the valley and stopped at a few scenic points before heading to lunch at a traditional Portuguese restaurant that he recommended. Gustavo was very friendly, knowledgeable, and treated us as friends as he explained the history of Portugal and the valley. After lunch we stopped at Quinta da Pacheca for a wine tasting, with the wines picked by Gustavo himself. I would recommend this tour to all and cannot give Gustavo a high enough rating. This was a truly outstanding trip made especially memorable by our wonderful guide, Anselmo. It felt more like a day out with a friend rather than a guide we’d only just met that morning. Anselmo took us to places in the Douro Valley that we would never have experienced without his knowledge. We also had a wonderful locals bar stop on our return to Porto at the end of the day - fabulous! He was so informative, friendly and easy going with a real desire to tailor make the day to suit our group of 7. The Patel de Natas, baked freshly that morning by Anselmo’s cycling friend and top class baker were, without doubt, the best we tasted in our time in Porto - and we ate many! This was such a lovely, generous thoughtful touch which made this tour extra special. The lunch stop was spectacular in every sense - the scenery, the venue, the food, the service and, of course, the wine and port. The most delicious meal we had during our stay in Porto. Anselmo was the perfect host/driver for a day trip to the Douro Valley. My husband and I had the absolute best day! Anselmo was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine and the valley. He provided an option to either do the river cruise or the scenic route at the start of our trip - we chose the scenic route and it did not disappoint as we were able to stop at a small town and tried a farmers port (which was delicious). We then stopped by two wineries (both had amazing views) - the first one a smaller producer where we had a fabulous lunch as well. The second one was a bit larger but with a great taste of port. I always like to book a day with a local guide when I travel, and we were looking for doing that in the the Douro Valley. But we were a fairly large group with young children, which made planning a bit more challenging, and not every guide could accommodate us. Luckily, Anselmo was incredibly solution-oriented, he found another driver and a mini van for us to explore the Douro. Anselmo is super knowledgeable and passionate about the Douro region and shared fun insights. The Douro Valley is also incredibly beautiful so really a must see while around Porto. We so enjoyed our day with Anselmo touring the Douro Valley — it was truly a highlight of our trip to Portugal, and we owe it all to Anselmo! My two adult daughters and I were staying in an Airbnb in the Centro Historico neighborhood and Anselmo kindly arranged to pick us up literally at our doorstep. He was right on time and got us settled in his very clean and comfortable car for our journey out to the Valley. We all immediately connected over his love of cycling (his bike tours sound amazing!) and our love of food and wine — very easy conversation and an enjoyable ride to the Valley. During the day, we visited sites we would have never managed to see on our own or with a group tour — the highest point in the Valley for the views, a small hilltop village for a local coffee shop for “farmers’ wine”, espresso and authentic Pasteis De Nata (Anselmo had picked these up from his neighborhood bakery that morning!), multiple vineyards and an elegant prix-fixe lunch he had arranged beforehand at one of the vineyard’s on-site restaurant (stunning views, delicious food and wine!). Anselmo also had all the best locations for photos picked out along the way and made sure to stop and let us capture some great memories. It was a very warm day in the Valley, but he kept us plenty comfortable with a/c, water and maybe even a small nap or two in the car between sites (day drinking is tiring!😂). If you are considering a tour with Anselmo, do not hesitate to book — he is one of the nicest people we met in all of Portugal!Perfect day in the Douro Valley!

Gustavo took the four of us Americans (two New Yorkers and two San Franciscans) in his excellent Mercedez Benz from Porto to the Duoro for the day. It was very hot, but the car was comfortable. He is beyond knowledgeable about all things Portugal, especially its political and social history. He took us to two wineries and an exceptionable place for lunch run by locals that was authentic, traditional cuisine, modest in price. We saw all of the beautiful Douro valley with fantastic weather! Gustavo was engaging and very knowledgeable of the various wines of Portugal and recommended a great local restaurant with authentic Portuguese cuisine. The 2 wineries we visited were gorgeous and outstanding! We purchased some wine after a relaxing wine tasting on the patio at Pacheca Winery. If you are into wine as much as we are this was a great tour. Gustavo was very accommodating with our time schedule and got us back to our cruise ship with time to spare. Since the valley is a bit far from the port other guides we not willing to take us on this tour so use Gustavo if you decide to book this. We (a group of 4) recently did the Douro Valley tour with Anselmo. In short, you cannot pick a better guide than Anselmo, he gave us a true VIP experience. He kept us entertained with some great facts and pointed out the sights on the drive to the valley. We stopped at a nice overlook spot for pictures upon entering the valley. Anselmo let us choose between a boat ride on the river or an extra wine tasting stop. We chose the boat ride. It was nice to be on the water and the views were great. After that we stopped at a nice winery and did a tasting. Anselmo very clearly explained all the ins and outs of port wine. Next Anselmo took us to an extremely beautiful hotel and restaurant for lunch. This was unexpected. The food was amazing and included more wine than we could drink. I was a little concerned that the bill was going to be huge given the quality of the food and how nice the place was. It turned out to be extremely reasonable in price. Finally we toured the wine making facilities at the same hotel. This was my favorite part as the facility is integrated into the side of the mountain and is architecturally spectacular. Anselmo is knowledgeable and answered all of our questions, but he was never overwhelming with too many facts or speeches. He strikes just the right balance. He also has the hook ups with the best places to visit. Use Anselmo for all of your Porto area tour needs. You cannot go wrong!Best Guide

The absolute best experience with Anselmo! He picked us up on time from our hotel in Porto and whisked us away to the Douro valley. I picked Gustavo for our family visit to Douro valley based on his excellent reviews. I asked to start at 10 am instead of 9 am which he agreed to. At the start he stated " it was absurd to start at 10 am" to which one of my daughters responded that we like sleeping in and he said "well I don't work past 5". I did not address this to avoid it being awkward for my family for the next few hours. He did not give an overview of the itinerary. He got better and gave excellent descriptions of the wine and port, region, history, great lunch restaurant, wineries and had great spots to take family pictures. We did not have a boat trip which I forgot to ask about and he did not mention why/why not we were not doing it. It really felt that he did not want to do this tour for us and I was trying to navigate and ensure my family was comfotable and relaxed. Perhaps he was having a bad day.The experience could be better..

The drive to the Douro Valley was both scenic and very interesting, we stopped for coffee and scenic photo opportunities. The boat trip in Peniche was relaxing and the scenery beautiful followed by a very enjoyable lunch. The highlight was then the visit to the small family wine estate Quinta Seara d’Ordens, a beautiful winery, off the beaten track, stunning wines and a very entertaining tour. Mein Frau und ich hatten einen tollen Tag im Douro-Tal mit Gustavo, der uns in seiner komfortablen Mercedes E-Klasse sicher und souverän zu den schönen und ruhigen Orten im Douro-Tal brachte. Dank seiner Auswahl mussten wir uns nirgends die Orte mit anderen Touristengruppen teilen, meistens waren wir sogar für uns allein. Am beeindruckendsten war es, ganz allein auf der großen Terrasse von „Quinta do Seixo“ (Sandemann) zu sitzen und bei einem leckeren Port Tonic die Ruhe und den wunderbaren Blick auf den Douro zu genießen. Auch die spätere Weinprobe auf dem Weingut „Quinta da Pacheca“ konnten wir in aller Ruhe im Schatten von Bäumen genießen. Am Ende der Tour hat Gustavo noch einen außerplanmäßigen Abstecher nach Amarante gemacht, wo wir erneut ohne andere Touristen den Blick von der malerischen Brücke genießen und die dortige Kirche besichtigen konnten. Gustavo gibt einem das Gefühl, nicht von einem klassischen Tourguide begleitet zu werden, sondern von dem „Freund eines Freundes“ (zumindest zu Beginn kennt man sich ja nicht), der einem seine Heimat zeigt und dabei mit seinem Wissen nicht nur über das Douro-Tal und den dortigen Weinanbau, sondern auch über Portugals Geschichte beeindruckt. Gleichzeitig zeigte er auch großes Interesse an dem, was aktuell in Deutschland passiert. Es wurde nie langweilig während der ganzen Tour.Ein toller Tag mit Gustavo im Douro-Tal

Anselmo is a great guide. He communicated with us the day before the trip, and was prompt to pick us up. As we drove from Barcelona to the Douro valley, he gave us several options on how to spend the day, to find the best fit for us. We had coffee and local pastries to start, and then an amazing scenic drive through the valley with several stops to get out and enjoy the beauty. Anselmo is fantastic! He is friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about port wine and the Douro Valley. It took about 1.5hrs to drive out to the valley from Porto. Anselmo was a great driver and the journey was overall very pleasant. In addition to taking us to two wineries in the valley, Anselmo also made a point to show us "the real Douro" and we stopped at a local cafe in the town for espresso, pastry and a small port wine. It was perhaps our favorite part of the tour! Anselmo took us down into the valley on a road he discovered as an avid biker. The road allowed us to drive down to the river through the terraces and vines with extraordinary views the whole way. Overall, such an amazing experience. We are already planning on recommending Anselmo to our friends who are visiting Porto in the fall. He was perfectly informative, but didn't overload us with details. My husband and I had the most fabulous day with Anselmo to the Douro Valley from Porto. He was professional and fun; we learned so much about the area and Portugal in general, including funny stories along the way. We were blown away by the magnificence of the area. Thrilled to visit an authentic small town for local port, coffee, church visit and Anselmo’s local tarts. Visits to vineyards, including lunch were also wonderful experiences. Absolutely 5 stars for Gustavo! He was an absolute gentleman from start to finish, gracious, warm, and endlessly accommodating. He guided us through the Douro wine valley with a perfect mix of fascinating history, scenic detours, and hidden gems we never would have found on our own. He took us to the most lovely, delicious authentic spot for lunch! We genuinely enjoyed his company, he’s not only a fantastic guide but just a wonderful person to spend the day with. Gustavo took us on a lovely drive through the beautiful Douro Valley and shared many interesting facts about the agricultural history of this region of Portugal. Gustavo is a witty and wonderful conversationalist, quite knowledgeable about his country’s history, and he speaks excellent English. The scenery throughout the drive was spectacular, and we had opportunities to take pictures and ask questions, and every stop along the way was delightful, as was the wine we tasted. We also stopped at a traditional Portuguese restaurant in a quaint and charming little village and ate a delicious meal accompanied by some excellent wine. All in all, we had a marvelous and memorable experience with Gustavo. Delightful time in the Douro Valley

Anselmo did a fabulous job creating an amazing experience for my family. We left a little earlier than 9 am to beat the rush of other tourists and he look us wine tasting to two different wineries, each of which has great wine and fantastic views. He even arranged for a cake to be served with our lunch in celebration of my mom’s 80th birthday. We are so grateful for the time and care he put into making our experience so memorable. During our time in Portugal, he was the best tour guide we had, and we went on several tours using Withlocals and others. Blown away

We are four ladies who had the most lovely day with Anselmo in the Duoro valley. The countryside is just beautiful and worth the drive from Porto, and we felt like celebrities having a private port tasting in a stunning vineyard. Anselmo had thoughtfully brought us local pastries as a snack to accompany the port. My wife and I booked our Douro day trip at the last minute, and it proved to be a great decision. Our guide and driver, Rui, was fantastic and made our tour very enjoyable. We were picked up on time and the ride to the Douro Valley seemed short as Riu filled the time with local knowledge of Porto and surrounding areas. Once in the Valley, we found Riu to be extremely interesting with facts and history along the drive. Riu was also very flexible as we adjusted our tour based upon our interests. The day seemed to pass quickly. The scenery, boat trip, and wine tasting were outstanding. We highly recommend the day tour and Rui. Wonderful Day in Douro
