What you can expect
The Netherlands is famous for many things, but something that doesn't get enough recognition is its food. As a big foodie and experienced history guide, I want to invite you to dive into the tasty mystery of Dutch food!
Even better, this private food tour is 100% personalized! Pick the tastings that meet your eye from the list below, and if it's not there, don't worry! Send me a message and I can give you other suggestions according to your preferences and diet.
From our favorite sweets like a unique anise-flavored treat or the typical Dutch “Black Gold” licorice. And of course, a cheese tasting is also part of the options. Feel free to ask me all of your cheesy questions, but hey: don’t milk it!
Your private food tour will also show you the city as we go from tasting to tasting. Visit the vibrant neighborhood of the Jordaan. Here, you will find hidden gardens, typical Dutch brown bars, and most importantly: the best apple pie in town!
It's time to go international! My grandpa always told me that the best Dutch food is Indonesian food. Give it a try! And for a real local treat, eat some raw fish! Herring is a local delicacy that for the Dutch is a must, and they have been eating it for over 1000 years!
I also want to take you to my favorite café where you can try yourself on the wooden old Dutch game called “Sjoelen.” Here you can enjoy authentic Dutch Bitterballen paired with a local beer.
This experience is unique and includes at least 6 tastings! I'll personalize the tour & tastings according to your preferences & requests. Try delicious food and discover the city with me. And remember: if it ain't Dutch, it ain't much!

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of taking a private two-hour food tour with Otto in the neighborhood near the Begijnhof, and it was an absolute highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. Otto went above and beyond to tailor the experience to our dietary preferences and interests, making us feel like the tour was truly crafted just for us.
From the start, Otto was personable, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about Amsterdam’s history and culinary traditions. His passion for the city and its food scene was infectious, and his easy-going demeanor made the tour feel like an afternoon spent with a friend.
Since we had expressed a desire to limit carbohydrates and weren’t overly enthusiastic about candy, Otto made thoughtful adjustments to the typical group itinerary. He selected stops that offered a fantastic variety of local specialties and even included a coffee shop café in honor of our background in the coffee business. Over the course of the tour, we visited seven unique stops, each offering something delicious and memorable:
• Fresh raw herring and smoked eel: The smoked eel was hands down the star of the tour—unbelievably flavorful and a perfect taste of Dutch tradition.
• Pea soup at a pub: Hearty, comforting, and quintessentially Dutch.
• Brazilian café for coffee and Pão de Queijo: As coffee enthusiasts, we loved this unexpected stop. The cheese bread bites were warm and delightful.
• Local Dutch Gouda cheese: A must-try and perfectly curated by Otto.
• Peppernuts: A crunchy, spiced treat that gave us a taste of the Netherlands’ love for seasonal flavors.
• Stroopwafel: Though we’re not big on sweets, this was an undeniable classic.
Throughout the tour, Otto seamlessly wove in fascinating tidbits about Amsterdam’s history, from its humble beginnings to its vibrant present. His storytelling added so much depth to the experience, making it more than just a food tour—it was a cultural deep dive. He pointed out small, easy to miss things, like brass bricks laid in honor of Jewish families who were taken and murdered in concentration camps.
Another thing we appreciated was how resourceful Otto was in helping us plan the rest of our day. After the tour, he gave us excellent recommendations for unique things to do in the area, which we eagerly took advantage of.
This was a completely different experience from what you’d get in a group setting. Otto’s ability to adapt the tour to our preferences, his deep knowledge, and his genuine love for connecting with guests made this one of the best tours we’ve taken.
If you’re looking for a personalized and enriching way to experience Amsterdam’s food and culture, do yourself a favor and hire Otto. You won’t regret it!Otto’s Private Amsterdam Food Tour

Zoe took over because Otto wasn't available. He was very communicative about being unavailable, and she was so great. She took care of our little Emmy and was just perfect all around. Thank you!A wonderful backup

Otto was fun and quirky - definitely knowledgeable. He asked us several questions to get to know us, but didn't really seem to listen because he asked them over again about 30 minutes later. Although he brought us to places where we could taste a few local items like bitterballen; the last place we ended up seemed to be more about what he wanted versus what we wanted. Fun and quirky, but needs to listen better

Otto was fantastic. He patiently answered all of the questions we fired at him, politely corrected our horrible Dutch pronunciations, and steered us through the customs, foods and culture. It was a really enjoyable few hours and delicious, too!Hang with a friendly local!

Words can’t express how great of a time we had with Otto! He customized our tour and took us to some really great spots we wouldn’t have found on our own. This was our first experience in Amsterdam and we are so glad we kicked it off with this tour. We really got a true local’s perspective and that allowed us to better determine how we wanted to spend the rest of our trip. He also knows a lot of history about Amsterdam, so when choosing Otto, you’re really getting a well rounded tour guide. We were certainly sad when our time with Otto came to an end, but he was kind enough to provide us with an entire list of all of his recommendations and favorite spots — and that was such a great help! He even checked in on us a few days into our trip to see if we needed any more advice or suggestions. Otto really went above and beyond and we are lucky to have met him. Proost my friend! Incredible Fun!

Otto is a personable young man who was fun to spend a few hours with on our visit to Amsterdam. We did a long walking tour where Otto shared his knowledge of local graffiti art and Amsterdam coffee houses. We also tried a hot croquet from a vending machine, delicious herring, a freshly made caramel stroopwafel, tasty Dutch fries with mayo, authentic Dutch cheeses at a cheese shop, and licorice and De Ruijter sprinkles from Otto’s backpack. However, Otto skipped a number of the foods we had signed up to try and had hoped to learn more about, including Indonesian food, the drink called the “Headbunk”, and authentic Dutch Bitterballens paired with a local beer. Nor did we visit a typical Dutch brown bar. I have been on food tours in other cities and left them satiated with new foods and new knowledge. Although we knew we would most likely not visit all the highlights the tour description mentioned, we still had higher expectations of this tour than were delivered. However, Otto was enthusiastic about all the foods that Amsterdam has to offer and later sent a helpful email that included his recommendations of places to eat. All in all, this tour was good, but could use some fine-tuning to make it great.Food tour with Otto

We enjoyed Otto as a guide--he was personable and knowledgeable. The tour was not as expected, however, as we were not interested in partaking of products from the brown cafes in Amsterdam. We may have misread the intent of this tour--that is on us, not the guide. The craft brewery was enjoyable, however, with some interesting beers and food. Things may be changing in Amsterdam, so you might only wish to schedule this tour for late evenings.Great Guide, Tour not as Expected

The tour with Otto was awesome. He engaged with me right at the start to tailor the tour to my preferences. During it, he was full of knowledge of the local area, having lived there, and could answer all sorts of questions. The whole thing was very relaxed and felt more like catching up with a friend rather than being on a tour. If you're in Amsterdam, I cannot recommend this tour highly enough!Super chill

I booked the "Amsterdam without the crowds" virtual tour for my mother-in-law's birthday. She joined from North Carolina and we joined from Florida as Otto walked and skateboarded us to various spots in the city center and gave us a great overview while also answering all our questions. It was a terrific way for us to "travel" together during Covid and see the sites. It was a beautiful day, with a few entertaining spontaneous interactions with some locals, and we all enjoyed the tour very much. Thanks Otto!Very enjoyable hour in Amsterdam

We did the 'Amsterdam without the crowds' tour with Otto in mid June 2020, just when the city was opening up after the covid restrictions. Otto is a smart young man with excellent knowledge about Amsterdam and its history. He customised the tour based on our preferences and showed us some quirky parts of the city which we really enjoyed. He did an excellent job ensuring he had the right camera / microphone equipment to ensure a smooth online experience. My friends and I now all want to visit Amsterdam and see if from another perspective. Definitely recommend this tour!Super fun hour with Otto !

It was an awesome experience of having a LIVE video tour of Amsterdam with Otto. Me and two to my friends booked this Live tour. It was highly interactive tour, with Otto directly answering our queries about places and people. Otto showed us lakes, some shops and museums (from outside due to lockdown) and lastly the Dam square. A spice in the tour was his staking board, which he used couple of times to speed up the tour. A little suggestion for improvement is to improve the audio, since we could not hear him clearly at some specific portions of the trip.Superb LIVE expericne of Amsterdan

Otto took us on a fun and fascinating tour through Amsterdam. He is personable and offers much interesting insight into details of local life and the history of the Netherlands. My wife and I had finally planned to take our kids (12, 10, 7) to Europe in June, but coronavirus canceled that. Following Otto through the streets certainly gave the feel of being in Europe; we could see both small details of bridges and stores as well as some of the major architecture including the royal palace. He skipped the red light district at my request, but we saw much of the canals while Otto kept us engaged throughout. He spoke to each of our kids directly, and we had the chance to show him the snow falling in Pittsburgh in May. The Zoom meeting worked pretty well - there were no technology glitches and we were able to hear most that he said. This was a worthwhile experience that certainly felt more authentic and personal than a virtual tour through a castle or museum. Fun, authentic way to experience Europe for the whole family

My son gave my wife this virtual tour for Mother's Day. It did not disappoint. Otto was funny, knowledgeable and engaging. He messaged me several times before the tour in order to personalize our visit to include a couple of special stops my wife wanted to see. While we really wanted to visit Amsterdam in-person, this was the best we could do in the times of COVID. Thanks Otto for the wonderful experience and we'll come see you when the world opens back up. More about me
Otto loves telling crazy stories about the dutch and his hometown Amsterdam. He has over 7 years of guiding experience and his storytelling even got published by CuriosityStream. And yes, he is perhaps the most Dutch Dutchman where all the stereotypes are based on… He is tall, has blonde hair and blue eyes and owns a total of six bikes. Next to that, Otto grew up on one of the last remaining Dutch “Terpen”. This is a small hill that floods in winter, so it turned into an island once a year! He went to the big city of Amsterdam to study and now knows Amsterdam as well as his old tiny island. Now when he is not reading books about Amsterdam’s history, or busy researching the human mind in his studies of psychology, he loves to connect with travellers from around the globe!
