What you can expect

20th Century Icons: David Bowie & Marlene Dietrich with a Movie Fanatic in Berlin - dacf18a89864e636687c5b43a67d14f8

We booked the David Bowie/Marlene Dietrich tour as part if our visit to Berlin. The whole booking process was easy and the ability to tailor your tour fantastic. Martin met us at the prearranged location and began our private tour promptly. Martin gave us another perspective of Bowie and his time spent in Berlin. It was fascinating and very interesting to see and hear about Bowie's time in the city and how it influenced his life. Martin not only took us to places that both Bowie and Dietrich lived and worked but brought photos along to help illustrate and set the scene for two of Berlin's most famous people. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and highly recommend this tour if you are a Bowie fan or Dietrich affectionado. Bowie/Dietrich tour

I can’t recommend Martin enough. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. The two-and-a-half-hour tour just flew by. He really knows his stuff and you can tell he’s a fan not just a tour guide. We really enjoyed spending time in his company, the conversation never stopped throughout the whole time. Even as a pretty big Bowie fan I learnt a lot from the tour, and he really helped to bring Bowie’s time in Berlin to life. If you are looking at a Bowie tour, then this is the one you need to go on. I was really looking forward to this and Martin didn’t disappoint. Just as an aside, we had only just landed in Berlin a couple of hours before the tour, Martin was even able to recommend a couple of restaurants near to our hotel. Can’t argue with that. Thank you, Martin! This tour was a key reason for us coming to Berlin and you really delivered.Fantastic Bowie Tour

Martin was a fantastic host and guide. He was extremely patient with me when I got lost on my way to meet him. From the moment the tour started, Martin was warm and friendly. His passion for history, music, and film shone through every smile, every story, and every turn of another Berlin corner. Not only did Martin teach me things about Bowie and Dietrich, he also piqued my interest in Knef, Palmer, and Schneider. Further, he did not treat his subject matter as if it existed in a vacuum of glamour. Instead, he gave rich historical content about the political environments surrounding each artist. I also learned that my fellow Detroiter, Iggy Pop, REALLY liked cats. Embarrassingly so. I can NOT say enough wonderful things about Martin. As a new Berliner, I will definitely take another of his tours in order to learn more about this fascinating city. 11/10 stars! Berlin’s Best

Martin was the perfect guide. Warm, friendly, knowledgeable, passionate about his subjects and his city. He tailored our tour exactly to our specifications and was throughout a wonderful guiding presence to what we saw. Very quickly it felt like walking Berlin with an old friend not someone we had only just met. Highly recommended! Bowie Tour with Martin

While visiting Berlin, I commented to my husband that it would be wonderful to explore Bowie’s Berlin. I looked online and was so lucky to find the Bowie and Dietrich tour offered by Martin through “with locals”. Martin personalized his tour for us to focus specifically on Bowie which we really appreciated. Martin was extremely knowledgeable and personable. He also was careful to accommodate my husband’s mobility challenges. We not only got to see Hansa studios where Bowie recorded the Berlin trilogy, and the apartment that he shared with Iggy Pop, but we also explored his haunts throughout the city (eg bars, nightclubs, where he did his grocery shopping). This tour is a must for any Bowie fan. We highly recommend it! Thank you again Martin.

Martin gave us a wonderful tour, and we just focused on Bowie. We went to all the special places - Hansa studios, where Bowie lived, his old neighbourhood - it was very special. Martin is a fantastic host and gave us great insights into Bowie's life in Berlin, as well as about Berlin generally. He's smart, charming, and made our tour thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended. A wonderful tour!

We had a truly unforgettable afternoon with Martin. He was so wonderfully informative and personable that our time with him felt more like meeting up with an old friend, rather than working with a professional guide. His tour focused on David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich, and Martin magnificently brought their stories to life for us as he showed us around their old Berlin haunts, including Dietrich’s birth home and places that Bowie lived and worked. However, Martin is (just like us) a wildly enthusiastic film buff and movie historian, so between the tour’s stops our conversations took off into wildly diverse tangents about other films, directors, and performers. (We were thrilled when he showed us that Christoph Waltz has a star on Potsdamer Platz’s Walk of Fame, and wow, if you love Billy Wilder movies and want to discuss them, Martin is your guy!) Our adventure ended outside a tavern David Bowie had frequented near Bowie’s Berlin apartment, where we all sat down together at one of the sidewalk tables and enjoyed a marvelous freewheeling conversation, with topics ranging from our personal Top 10 favorite films to which Berlin cemetery Horst Bucholz is buried in. (Martin and my husband even hummed together Ennio Morricone’s music from Once Upon a Time in the West.) Such a grand, happy, and unexpected experience!Wonderful, informative, and personable!

This Bowie tour hosted by Martin was fantastic. He took us to all of the relevant places in the city which we wouldn’t have been able to access properly without his guidance and knowledge of berlin and David Bowie’s time there from 1976-78. Martin was extremely accommodating, slightly altering the trip to fit our particular preferences and I would highly recommend this tour to any Bowie fan or even anyone interested in seeing a different side to Berlin with an extremely informative and helpful guide. Thank you Martin for a special tour Bowie’s Berlin with Martin...

Martin was great, again! My daughter and I first met Martin in December, 2018, when we scheduled his Marlene Dietrich / David Bowie private tour. Martin was so well versed in the subject matter, professional yet personable and easy to understand. For these reasons, when I planned a May visit to Berlin with my husband, I immediately scheduled a tour with Martin. This time it was focused on WWII Memorials, and elements of his Hidden Berlin and Berlin Metro tours. Martin customized the tour based on our preferences and did an amazing job. We learned a lot and had fun doing so! We also really enjoyed the scheduled tea break at beautiful Kornerpark with it's cascading waterfalls and flower gardens! Customized Berlin Walking Tour

Martin customized a David Bowie tour for us that was truly fantastic. He really transported us to the Berlin of the late 1970s. We had a million questions about the city and Martin answered all of them with enthusiasm. Aside from being a great tour guide, he is also a great conversationist. To top it all off he made a bunch of restaurant recommendations for our stay and even offered to call to make the reservations for us! I will definitely tour with him again if we come back to Berlin.Samantha - Bowie Tour

Martin was informed, intelligent, friendly and taught us much more about the city and architecture than we had anticipated. As English speakers, we found Martin's mastery of the language to incredibly helpful and it made for an expansive informative conversation. His knowledge of the city provided a more in-depth understanding of how this wonderful city inspired one of our favorite artists, Mr. David Bowie. If we could give Martin more stars we would! Highly recommended!

Martin customized a tour for my mother and I where we blended elements of the Hidden Berlin Tour and the 20th Century Icons. Martin is very knowledgeable, engaging and easy to get along with! He provided us with a rough itinerary for the day, but as the tour went on he made some changes based on our interests. We very much enjoyed getting into some of Berlin's less tourist oriented neighborhoods and also taking a break for some much needed coffee and cake! We also enjoyed seeing some of the landmark spots in Berlin, such as where David Bowie recorded his Berlin trilogy albums and Marlene Dietrich's birthplace, and her grave. Overall, I can't recommend Martin enough! I have told my family (who are planning to travel to Berlin in the upcoming months) that they simply must book a tour with Martin! Awesome tour of Berlin!

We asked Martin to provide us with a tailored David Bowie-themed tour of Berlin and he delivered with style and panache. His knowledge of the area coupled with his natural enthusiasm and positivity made for an informative and truly memorable experience. Martin's energetic delivery also helped create at atmosphere of tension and drama in the November twilight, which really brought the late-1970s-era zeitgeist of Bowie clearly into focus. In addition to the tour itself, Martin gave us some very helpful hints and tips regarding the local nightlife which acted as an invaluable roadmap for our social activities on the Saturday night. Martin was fantastic. Provided us with insights into East Berlin and the political and social culture of the time. Brought the not so distant past into sharp relief with stories and interesting facts that we would never have had the chance to experience or understand. The private tour is well worth the money as we were able to ask lots of questions and interact with him. He made us feel comfortable right away. I did the tour mostly because of my husbands interest but I left feeling invigorated. Plan on watching all the movies he suggested and learning more about the Cold War because of Martin’s tour. His restaurant recommendations are also spot on. Highly recommend it. Thank you Martin. Converted me into a history enthusiast

Our understanding of the Cold War and Berlin was somewhat limited up to the point of meeting Martin on Monday morning. Having spent 3-4 hours visiting the key sights and listening to his encyclopedic knowledge of events, places and dates, we now have a thorough grasp of this complicated subject. Martin presents the information in an easy to understand way and is happy to be constantly interrupted by probing questions! I am always a bit hesitant to commit to paying for a local guide, having been bitten in the past, but this was worth every penny and I would happily recommend Martin for any tour of Berlin that you are considering. 10/10. What can we say about Martin - other than a HUGE THANKYOU! Martin’s enthusiasm & knowledge is absolutely amazing as well as speaking perfect English. His love of history is obvious and we learnt so much from him during our tour. Martin also grew up in Berlin before the wall came down and has so many tales of what life was really like in West Berlin as well as being happy to talk about what he was taught in school about WWII etc. His communication style is very relaxed and happy to answer any questions. In fact, the time when by so quickly, walking along and chatting that we were disappointed when the tour came to an end! We cannot recommend Martin highly enough. As we had previously been to Berlin, we were looking for something a bit different and Martin provided us with a real jewel of a tour. We enjoyed an amazing and entertaining tour of some of Berlin's lesser known, but truly interesting historical sites. Martin was happy to curate a tour that addressed our specific request to visit a cemetery, as well being so knowledgeable to modify the tour on the fly when we were running up against a time deadline. It was incredibly inspiring to cross Berlin with Martin, following the trail of persons resisting the national-socialist ideology and instead chose to do the right thing in the 1933-1945 period! Martin has extensive knowledge about this part of German history and shared this with stories, a nice list for further reading and recommendations for films and documentaries. In summary: highly recommended if you want to learn a about this less known part of Berlin history!Inspiring, informative and pleasant!

We discovered with charming Martin the heart of Kreuzberg, SO36 : streetart "Nature Morte" of ROA (Belgian streetartist, thx, Martin!) en other local streetartists; Rüdesheimer Platz: a lovely place to come back in summer to taste the good wines of the Rhine region, sous les platanes. He introduced us the Oranienstrasse, a little deviation by the VOOstore & The Orania Hotel. A meeting with "the Grenzgänger" (Stephan Balkenhol) at the Axel Springer-Haus. The Sugar Walhalla (House of Sweets Berlin) or the Lindner Esskultur? Les gouts et les couleurs ne se discute pas :) Thanks, Martin, you were the cherry on the cake on this birthdaytrip for Inge! More about me

I am a professional, qualified and certified tour guide and have made it my mission to show visitors to Berlin sights, sites, monuments and places which they may otherwise miss, as navigating Berlin can be a challenge due to its sheer size, and since Berlin, in my opinion, is a city that is easily 'misunderstood'. I've been working as a tour-guide ever since I returned from having lived abroad (UK, France) for close to 16 years. While living in the UK, I gained a Master's Degree at Bath University and a PhD at the prestigious University of Warwick. The topics of both my MA and my PhD dissertations revolve around the Holocaust, which is why Holocaust and Third Reich History are my particular field of expertise. Following my return, I had to practically rediscover Berlin anew as so much of it had changed. The constant changes Berlin undergoes, however, make it a fascinating place to visit. But it is exactly that which also make it a challenge to the casual tourist, not to mention tour operators and travel book publishers as they have to edit their Berlin edition every so often, with new museums, sights, and monuments being built on a constant basis.

The tours I offer here will take you around Berlin - by foot and by underground - in just under four hours, introducing you to the many faces and facets you never knew Berlin had, including Germany's oldest mosque, a pretty little square which the New York Times called "one of Europe's prettiest", one of Europe's most beautiful subway lines (and stations!), Berlin's second oldest Jewish cemetery, the location of the first victim of the infamous Berlin Wall, a former bunker that's been turned into luxury apartments, a synagogue of which only a fraction survived the pogroms of Nov 9, 1938 but which may soon be rebuilt, a wild Turkish market which really is as much Indian and African as it is Turkish, an area that went from no-go-area to hip-and-trendy, David Bowie's Berlin home in the 1970s, and so on. ... ...
