Roberto went above and beyond, even helping us secure a transfer when we learned that the regional train we were planning was usually late. His in depth knowledge of Pompeii brought the city to life for us. He is also very personable with a quick sense of humor. After many years, finally a visit to Pompeii with an archologist (not just a tour guide hired by a travel or cruise outfit), who could point out the less obvious aspects of fragments of an ancient culture/civilization or stone walls . . . Roberto brought to our collective experience an insight, breath of knowledge, and willingness to answer the mundane and “strange” questions posed by members of our foursome. He also acknowledged the experiences/knowledge of individuals within the group of four that he shepherded around Pompeii for three hours under clear hot blue skies, taking time to rest, find shady spots to explain aspects of the pre-roman, roman and post-eruption history of Pompeii. We got to see, experience the lesser visited portions of the archeological site as well as the main touristy portions – The Forum. The companions of this excursion were most enthusiastic and very satisfied with the overall outing, including Roberto’s arranging for a shuttle driver to pick us up and returning us to our cruise ship docking in Naples. The only regret that I had, that the tour “only” lasted three hours, I could have continued to explore Pompeii in the company of Roberto, till the sun set over Vesuvius and the Archeological Park threw us out . . . ah, maybe next time . . . Having a real archaeologist as our guide brought the ancient city to life in the most exciting way—he showed us all the must-see sights and shared fascinating insights throughout. On top of that, he worked with me to create a custom itinerary for the afternoon, which included a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast, a quick stop in Sorrento, and a visit to beautiful Positano. I visited Pompei 20 years ago on the free group tour and had always wanted to go back, as there was so much more I wanted to see. It was wonderful to get a chance to do this with Roberto as our private guide. He took great care to find out what we were interested in seeing and recommended rearranging the day of our tour (which we did) to ensure all the newer sites would be open. Seeing Pompei with Roberto was truly fascinating and felt like I was seeing Pompei for the first time again! I also learned so much more than I did on my last visit. As well as being an interesting and expert guide, Roberto gave us a great tip for our visit to Herculaneum the following day, and a new food exhibition which we could access with our entrance ticket. This wasn’t advertised at Herculaneum (or mentioned by the guide there), so we wouldn’t have known about it otherwise. We were so glad that we saw it and thankful to Roberto for his recommendation. Without a doubt, his tour of Pompei was the highlight of our holiday and we will definitely book him for future trips : ) The highlight of our holiday!

Absolutely AMAZING experience with Roberto... he helped organize a driver to meet us at the train station so that we could go up to Vesuvius and hike the crater before then being driven back to Pompeii and meeting with Roberto for a tour. You can't even imagine how much more interesting and informative it is when you have a customized, private tour with an expert who loves history. Roberto is an amazing guide! He showed us so many little details in Pompeii and challenged us to figure out what some of the areas were. Because he is also an archeologist, we not only saw the life in Pompeii, we could feel it! Roberto was very kind to two elderly ladies, helping us over some of the rougher areas but never making us feel elderly. The pace of the tour was perfect. As we know, a tour experience rises and falls based primarily on the quality of the guide. Roberto was excellent. He communicated well prior to the tour and made the meeting efficient by sharing Google Maps links and provide good advice and instructions. He tailored the experience to our interests. He interacted very well with our three kids (ages 14, 12, and 9). This includes asking them questions (without making them uncomfortable), engaging with them, sharing things they may be interested in, and being patient with their relatively shorter attention spans and lack of interest in some details. While at the same time not dumbing the tour down for the adults and those who had deeper interests. He knew the site and the history very well and spoken about it clearly and logically. Roberto’s tour was recommended to me and I’m so glad it was because it was one of the best tours we’ve been on. Everyone in our group of 13 was raving about it afterwards. From the very start, Roberto was great in his communications with me while planning this excursion. He was always willing to answer my questions in a timely manner and arranged our transportation from our cruise ship to the site. We booked with Roberto for this tour specifically because of his professional background and it was absolutely fantastic! His wealth of knowledge helped frame our understanding of Pompeii before and after the volcano eruption. To learn so much about Roman engineering ingenuity, the lives of the Pompeians, architecture, and the on-going efforts of uncovering and preserving artifacts...all while walking us through the streets of Pompeii...was a gift and will be a lifelong memory. The site is HUGE and 3 hours will only give you time to cover a portion of the site, but Roberto did such an expert job on giving us a well rounded tour, we are aiming to return to see and learn more...with Roberto! Roberto was absolutely fantastic. Our journey to Pompeii from Naples was very difficult with train cancellations, and Roberto was very helpful in advising us how to get to the site. Once there, he also was able to modify our tour to accommodate our cranky, overheated teenagers, and end the tour near a secondary train station that allowed us to return to Naples more easily. Now, for the tour itself: Roberto is a true expert, who is engaging, knowledgeable, and personable. He conveys the fascinating history in a lively manner without being overwhelming. Roberto is fantastic; a fount of knowledge about ancient Pompeii and the art and artifacts of the time. My wife and I toured Pompeii with him four years ago, and his passion and demeanor caused us to reach back out when we returned with our two sons (23 and 12).
