A warm, sunny Sunday afternoon was made even better by a walking tour with Sarah, an accomplished travel journalist, wine writer and thirty year resident of the city. The tour takes in several bars which also serve snacks, some of the major attractions of Bologna and Sarah provides a stream of information on markets, bars, restaurants and other local items of interest. Sarah’s focus during our tour was on wines from Emilia-Romagna, including the internationally obscure but very seductive Albano variety. We had a great evening with Luca. He provided both a tour of the city as well as introduced us to the foods the region is famous for. His choices were spot on and our entire family (including 2 teenage sons) had a great time. We had been traveling in Italy for a week and this was for sure the most authentic and “local” food and dining we had our entire trip. Highly recommend! Dear Reader, As can be seen from the title of this review, we absolutely loved this expercience. Sarah (our guide/local) was from the start on fully comitted to provide my girlfriend with the perfect birthday present (the tour). She came with nice suggestions and questions in order to tailor it in such a way our tour through the wine world of bologna would be optimal. She showed us surprising locations and made us taste a variety of mouth watering wines. From drinking modern orange natural wine to finding ourselves sipping a classic red in One of the oldest wine bars of the city (unchanged since 1472 I believe), Sarah included it all in a great trip. Adding up her nice British sense of humor and a number of great stories about the city we would only be able to conclude that this is an absolute ‘must’ when visiting the culinary capital of Italy: Bologna! My partner and I had just arrived in Bologna and the waking eats and bites tour of Bologna was the best start to our stay here. Gioia was so welcoming and knowledgeable about food and wine and so easy to talk to. She showed us sights and places based on her very extensive knowledge of Bologna. Marco provided us with local flavors, bites and sights. He knew the local vendors and was very informative. We especially enjoyed the parmesan cheese tasting, cannelli making, and balsamic vinegar tasting. Marco was a wealth of info and stories, and very at ease. But, I have to say Marco looked rather unkempt. He gave the appearance that he slept in the clothes he had on and just rolled out of bed. Frederik is a terrific guide! He is friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable about his home city. Pride of place came through clearly as he took us on a most wonderful wander through the center of Bologna. When Frederik found out that we were interested in music, art and architecture, he made sure to point out beautiful details about the people and places important to the cultural life of the city. We walked miles with him, seeing the medieval towers and the markets full of meats and cheeses; fruits and vegetables; pastas and trattorias. He highlighted for us the intersection and interplay of history and architecture. By the end of the tour, we knew that one visit to Bologna would not be enough and already want to come back. And, at the end of the tour, he found a table for us in one of his favorite trattorias and helped us order lunch and gave us some great tips of other neighborhoods through which to wander before heading back to our hotel to rest our weary feet.Companionable Guide to the Best of Bologna

Fredrik was prompt, friendly, and well informed. We were there on a Sunday which was challenging, but he exceeded expectations. The history, food, and traditions were well explained. We spent a lovely morning with Paolo. He was both knowledgeable and entertaining. He was also very patient with our questions and at the times we took a little longer than necessary - balsamic vinegar tasting for example, this was great fun! I think though rather than a food tour I would recommend a historical walking tour of Bologna as you can get the food everywhere, at your own pace. Charismatic and informative

Sarah was very generous with her time for us. Not only did we get flavors from several places in the market and around town, but she toured us around other interesting locations that had nothing to do with the tasting tour. She has a vast knowledge of Bologna and is a sommelier with intimate knowledge of wine in the region. Having done a different food tour last week in Venice, which was also lovely, we appreciated this curated experience that didn’t leave us feeling too stuffed to walk - we were happy and satisfied. Marco is larger then life, both in personality and stature. His knowledge of the food scence in Bologna and surrounding areas is matched with his love and passion for it. Lucky this is a walking tour, because we needed. Each meal was amazing. Our family took a day trip to Bologna. We were staying in Florence for a week. We took the high speed rail (great experience).
