We waren al enkele dagen in Malaga toen we op stap gingen met Andy. We dachten dat we al één en ander wisten, maar dat bleek een schromelijke overschatting toen we met Andy op stap gingen. Als doorwinterde Spanje en Malaga kenner bleven de interessante weetjes, alsook culinaire (echt ons ding) maar komen. Isabel kindly agreed to a late reschedule due to torrential rain. Isabel is a proud boqueron -- a Malaga native with deep knowledge of the history and culture of her home town. He tour was informative and fun. She showed us lots of hidden gems that we would never have found ourselves. We particularly enjoyed the floats from the annual Easter parade. Isabel us a native if Malaga. We spent a little over three hours just strolling through old Malaga . She told us the history of Malaga from the Phoneticians to the present. . She stopped at small local shops to explain their significance to local people. The store selling flamenco dresses was one if these and how she studied flamenco from time she was a tiny girl. At the end she recommended a small local resturant to have a bite to eat where we. Could sample several local foods like delicious iberian ham and fried aubergine with “Malaga honey”. Had a great city tour with Miriam. She knew so much about the city. As we walked around she told us so much about what we saw and knowing that we ran late from the Picasso Museum, she made sure to stop for two snacks (highly recommend the horchata drink and the empanada, not what I thought it was going to be but absolutely delicious) and showed us some other yummy stops for later. Our tour guide, Isabel was not able to meet us and we met with Antonio instead. He was waiting for us when we arrived at the meeting place. He is a seasoned and experienced guide who really knows the town well. He took time to explain the history of the town and all the major landmarks. We especially loved the Alcazaba and adjacent amphitheater. He explained the chronology of occupants from the first group to settle there through all of the 20th century renovations. He also explained the etiology of the towns name : the Phoenicians may have derived the name from their goddess called Malack (sp?) or it could be named after their word for ocean port, Malaka. In either case it is a beautiful city. We also got to go to the Atarazanes market where he knew many vendors and we got to sample olives and pickles garlic. We also sampled salted olive oil almonds from a friendly street vendor. I would highly recommend this tour and would not hesitate to take a different tour With Locals again. Antonio was an excellent tour guide!

We had a good experience with Nathalie. She is friendly, outgoing, and knows the city and its history well, giving us useful tips for things to do in Cartagena. She spent the full three hours with us, making the tour pleasant and informative. During the food stops, we tried fresh fruit juice at the market, an arepa, local beer, coffee with cheese bread, and a special chocolate with an interesting story.
