Jones was great at communication. We probably picked a poor time as 11:00 in Taipei in August super hot! Jones was a champion he coordinated a well choreographed history tour that had us 1/2 the time in air conditioning. We learned a lot about Longshan Temple and local customs. He took us to eat and drink several local delicacies. We finished the tour at a Michelin restaurant that included braised pork, fried tofu and sweet potato leaves. A very scrumptious meal. That was our first trip to Taiwan and we're interested in authentic and traditional things and places, especially we'd like to visit Longshan temple. Day 2 into our trip and we had booked in a food tour with Garen who is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Instantly it felt like a friend showing us around which is not surprising given our co tact with her before arriving in Taiwan . Garen is an inspiring whirlwind of energy and fascinating insights that makes the food tour in Taipei an absolute pleasure. The food is of course tremendously delicious, however Garen makes it about so much more by weaving in truly rich context about the origins of many of the items and how it all relates to Taiwan’s history. As a result, we learned much more in these few hours than we did on many of the equivalent tours we have been lucky to enjoy in other Asian countries. Garen was also particularly considerate in ensuring the tour, conversation and pace was adapted to my son’s interests. I have been to Taiwan multiple times but for business purposes and this time I decided to go on vacation with my son and experience what true Taiwan is about and decided to go with Garen. The tour is in a fun, vibrant part of Taipei, ending at a beautiful memorial park. The mix of tastes is broad and covers the various well described influences to food and culture over the centuries in Taiwan. The portion sizes are small so you can pace yourself. I do not usually write unfavorable reviews, but after considering our experience I realized that others might want to have a better idea of what to expect. We have participated in many experiences during our years of traveling, and this was the first one that fell far short of our expectations. We are an adventurous family who specifically booked this tour the first day of our weeklong stay in Taipei. We were hoping it would help introduce us to unique foods, and we had asked in advance to go to places, and try foods, that might be challenging for foreigners to access. Instead we were taken to multiple tourist establishments within a 5 block area. This is not a walking tour, this did not expose us to unique foods and we did not learn anything about the foods of Taiwan. We attempted to ask questions about food, Taiwan, and even our tour guide; but questions were often ignored or answers were incoherent. Despite proficiency with English our guide often rambled and jumped from topic to topic (most having nothing to do with food). Not only did it not meet the stated goals, but we were generally uncomfortable throughout the experience. It was an unfortunate way to spend our first evening in Taiwan and I would advise others against taking this tour.Food tour

My husband and I travel extensively and have experienced all levels of tour guides and we both agreed that Garen is one of the best. She was engaging, knowledgeable, and prepared in every possible way…from answering our political questions about Taiwan’s history to giving us alcohol wipes before we ate. Garen was fabulous. We did a food tour but she mixed in a lot of interesting history, culture and commentary on modern Taiwan and it's people. I am also gluten free, which she accomodated as best she could (not easy in Taiwan), even dropping additional things off to one of the restaurants to prepare for me.Great mix of food, history and culture

My wife and I loved all parts of our day trip to Jiufen, Shifen, and Pingxi (the lantern experience was our favorite!), and much of it was because Daphne was a great host. She’s very knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to talk to. She answered all of our questions, provided lots of interesting historical background, and even shared some personal stories about some of the places we visited, like the Shifen waterfall. She also had loads of recommendations for things to do and places to eat and drink for the rest of our trip in Taipei.
