Jones was great at communication. We probably picked a poor time as 11:00 in Taipei in August super hot! Jones was a champion he coordinated a well choreographed history tour that had us 1/2 the time in air conditioning. We learned a lot about Longshan Temple and local customs. He took us to eat and drink several local delicacies. We finished the tour at a Michelin restaurant that included braised pork, fried tofu and sweet potato leaves. A very scrumptious meal. I have been to Taiwan multiple times but for business purposes and this time I decided to go on vacation with my son and experience what true Taiwan is about and decided to go with Garen. I do not usually write unfavorable reviews, but after considering our experience I realized that others might want to have a better idea of what to expect. We have participated in many experiences during our years of traveling, and this was the first one that fell far short of our expectations. We are an adventurous family who specifically booked this tour the first day of our weeklong stay in Taipei. We were hoping it would help introduce us to unique foods, and we had asked in advance to go to places, and try foods, that might be challenging for foreigners to access. Instead we were taken to multiple tourist establishments within a 5 block area. This is not a walking tour, this did not expose us to unique foods and we did not learn anything about the foods of Taiwan. We attempted to ask questions about food, Taiwan, and even our tour guide; but questions were often ignored or answers were incoherent. Despite proficiency with English our guide often rambled and jumped from topic to topic (most having nothing to do with food). Not only did it not meet the stated goals, but we were generally uncomfortable throughout the experience. It was an unfortunate way to spend our first evening in Taiwan and I would advise others against taking this tour.Food tour

My husband and I travel extensively and have experienced all levels of tour guides and we both agreed that Garen is one of the best. She was engaging, knowledgeable, and prepared in every possible way…from answering our political questions about Taiwan’s history to giving us alcohol wipes before we ate. I am also gluten free, which she accomodated as best she could (not easy in Taiwan), even dropping additional things off to one of the restaurants to prepare for me.Great mix of food, history and culture

My wife and I loved all parts of our day trip to Jiufen, Shifen, and Pingxi (the lantern experience was our favorite!), and much of it was because Daphne was a great host. She’s very knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to talk to. She answered all of our questions, provided lots of interesting historical background, and even shared some personal stories about some of the places we visited, like the Shifen waterfall. She also had loads of recommendations for things to do and places to eat and drink for the rest of our trip in Taipei. I was so pleased with my tour with Garen! Actually - two of them! The first was a 3 hour food tour which was informative, diverse and fun. Garen is welcomed everywhere she goes and her explanation of the cultural influences on each selection ( total 8-10) and the origin and preparation of each tasting was so interesting. Even had a lesson on how to order in Chinese restaurant when you don’t speak Chinese. The second tour was a 5 hour historical tour. Again, Garen showed an excellent sensitivity and insight into the history of Taipei: cultural, historical and religious and how they are combined. Garen invited and could answer any question at all. Thoughtful; solicitous; perfect English. I felt lucky to have found her. Cannot recommend her highly enough. Plus: Garen loves and is so very proud of Taiwan and Taipei. This was an excellent way to start our week in Taipei - by getting an insight into the local food and culture. Garen was a wonderful host who introduced us to lots of delicious food as we walked the streets of Taipei. What a great evening! We were 2 couples and booked the food tour on our first evening in Taipei. This was mainly to get to know the Taiwanese kitchen. The meeting with Garen was very friendly. We booked the day trip tour to Pingxi, Jiufen etc. with Daphne, but she unfortunately couldn't make it. She made arrangements for her colleague Carmelo to bring us so we could still do the tour, which was ok. He took us to all the places we wanted to see, and it was really beautiful. We even got some water and snacks for free, and it was nice to have a private driver who knew where to go. We missed a little more information along the way about where we were going and the history etc. about the places, but it was a good experience all in all.Great places to see

We had two great tours with Garen, the sightseeing tour and food tour. Communication was good from start to finish, and she had lots of information about the Taiwanese culture.
