You can’t get much better or well fed than with Jhoan! We toured around the city center while discussing the history, art, culture, food, and politics of Medellin, all while stopping at incredible food stalls and shops. We had a food tour with Jhoan on 5/13/25 and we loved it! Jhoan was very kind, informative, interesting, and was very flexible with our schedule needs. Even though the only day we had available for the food tour was a Sunday, a day that many restaurants are closed, that was no problem for Jhoan! He was very creative and gave us multiple tastings of different popular street foods and exotic fruits/juices we’ve never had before. An added bonus was the history he gave us of Medellín buildings and culture. Also, but the end of the tour, we were BEYOND stuffed, but in the best possible way! He was a fantastic guide! I booked a custom tour with Jhoan through WithLocals and really appreciated how kind and flexible he was in creating exactly what I asked for—a walking tour of Comuna 13 combined with a tasting experience. While I was hoping for a more “locals only” feel, the area itself is quite touristy and not really off the beaten path anymore. That said, Jhoan’s passion for sharing the history and spirit of his neighborhood really made the visit worthwhile. He took the time to show me parts of the local community beyond the main tourist areas, and I loved tasting fresh empanadas and popsicles along the way. Jhoan and his tour is a great option to explore the central district of Medellin, try various foods along the way, and learn the intriguing history of Columbia and Medellin, first hand from someone who has lived it. As a former military member, Jhoan gives a great perspective of everything you've heard, seen, and read about, regarding Colombian military, cartels, guerilla groups, and para-military. This is the best tour we have ever taken. It was a private tour for our family of five. Jhon went above and beyond. The food tour aspect was amazing (even my picky 11 year old enjoyed) and the commentary on the city and the tour of Comuna 13 was outstanding. He was very bright and informed about Colombia and geopolitics if asked, but not intrusive with any of it. We had a great time walking through downtown Medellin with Jhoan. He has a ton of knowledge about the history of the city and the country - the level of details he was able to provide was really insightful. We tried a ton of food - we were glad that we didn't have breakfast before. Everything was delicious. He shared his own personal experiences from his life. We enjoyed the tour so much, we ended up reaching out to him to take us to Communa 13 later that day - which was excellent. He grew up there so he had really personal experiences and insights to share. We did two tours with Jhoan in Medellin. The first tour was the food tour. I love the approach of getting to know a culture through its food. Jhoan took us to many places around the downtown area to explore its history and local foods. There were lots of food to sample. The portions and quantity were ample! If you’re looking to book this tour, be sure to come hungry! On the second day, we explored Comuna 13 with Jhoan. It was a comprehensive and informative itinerary. He interlaced the history of the neighborhood with his own experience growing up in it. We left the neighborhood with a better understanding of its past and its potential future. Jhoan is an interesting guy. His personal stories made these tours even more fascinating!

Jhoan was an awesome guide and was game to get us whatever we wanted. We were both pleased with the variety and quality of the food. It’s a big help to have a local point you to the best spots. He also treated us to a great deal of history along the way. These weren’t “samples” like you’d get with a big group, but rather whole portions of everything. We were full before we got all the way through, so don’t eat anything beforehand! Knowing that WithLocals takes 35% (!) of the total price made me feel better about the high cost considering Jhoan provided 95% of the value. If I had to do it again, a group food tour with small samples might’ve been preferable. But again, 10 stars for Jhoan.A good sampler of Medellin street food

I showed up to the exact statue that I was told to in Parque Barrio. It turns out there are a couple of the same statues! I waited for an hour and there were homeless people taking poops, trash everywhere and my wife and children were getting very scared. After an hour of waiting in the middle of the ghetto we left. On top of that With Locals actually charged me for the trip. They have 24 hours to credit me or I will be going to the BBB and placing a chargeback on my credit card. Don’t ever ever try this experience. You will not only be disappointed but you will be scared for your safety. The absolute worst.

Jhoan was an awesome tour guide and travel expert! He showed us all around Medellin and gave us even more information than the details we received through our larger travel agency. He took us around to his favorite street food areas and showed us some hidden secret cultural pieces as well. It was some of the best food we had all trip. After the food tour, he offered to take us to Comuna 13 on a different day after our other tours. He was nice enough to answer a late text from me a few days later and meet up with us to show Comuna 13 at night. This was an amazing experience to see all the sights, people, and culture really come alive. Jhoan has firsthand knowledge of the area and incredible passion for sharing it. We were so lucky to get to spend the day in Medellin with Jhoan. We tried all kinds of street foods and drinks around downtown, we saw historical buildings, Botero sculptures, and a “sneaker palace.” But Jhoan was really the star of our tour. His unique perspective and insider knowledge of the city was fascinating. We learned so much about the recent history of Medellin: the cartels, the guerillas, the paramilitary, the story of Comuna 13 and the artists who have transformed it. Jhoan is really smart, his English is perfect, and his wealth of knowledge and personal experiences made our tour so much more than just about trying different foods. My wife and I took a tour with Jhoan and loved every bit of it. We started with a bunch of street food tastings around Parque Berrio where Jhoan told us so much about the history of the city and the area. After we finished there, Jhoan was kind enough to extend the tour to the Comuna 13 area so off we went to visit there. It was amazing to see the area at night where the street art color seemed to pop even more under the street lights. Jhoan told us so much about the area and everything it's gone through over the years which was so enlightening. We highly recommend this tour, especially with Jhoan!!One of the best ways to see Medellin!

We immensely enjoyed our 10 Tastings of Medellin tour with Jhoan. The premise of the tour was sampling the local food, but his account of the history of Comuna 13 and greater Colombia was the unexpected gem. We walked Comuna 13 with Jhoan as the sun set, learning of the history of the community through Jhoan’s explanation of the abundant and beautiful graffiti. We did the local foodie tour the first day we were in Medellin. We were a bit intimidated when we first arrived at the meeting spot. The area downtown was pretty rough and our taxi driver warned us to be careful before he let us out. Then we misunderstood the exact meeting spot but Jhoan found us anyway (we stuck out like a sore thumb being the only fair skinned folks and clearly tourists… also fun fact, the locals in Medellin don’t wear shorts…we learned that pretty fast). Jhoan explained what to expect and told us that we were safe and there was nothing to worry about. It was pretty intimidating for us though, especially our kids (8 and 11), who had never been out of the states, as people constantly approached us trying to sell their wares (which of course is not unusual) however some were more aggressive than others which scared my kids a bit. Also we learned that tourism is fairly new to Medellin, like the last 5 years or so, so most folks did not speak English and weren’t used to seeing white folks. Two different men touched my son’s strawberry blonde hair when they walked by because apparently it was exotic to them. Also we had a very hard time getting a taxi after the tour and we hadn’t learned how to take the metro yet (which we found very easy once we did), so we ended up downtown once it got dark basically begging a cab to stop for us. It was a little scary. But as for the tour itself, Jhoan was fantastic. Super knowledgeable, great at sharing the history of the country (which he is clearly passionate about), and the food was delicious. I especially liked the different fruits and fruit juices that I had never tried or heard of. Jhoan was easy to talk to and very likeable. I definitely recommend selecting him as a guide if you’re considering a foodie tour. We really enjoyed our time but having the kids with us made it a bit more stressful because we weren’t as mentally prepared as we should have been with them for the downtown area we were in. Grest time with Jhoan!

Such a great tour with Johan. Johan was very accommodating, showed us great food around downtown Medellin and made us feel like locals. Really fun. We are really glad we decided to spend a morning with Carlos sampling a variety of fruits, snacks and drinks while wandering around the downtown area. Even though we had been in Colombia for a week and a half already we still tried new foods. I particularly enjoyed the tropical fruits and the steaming hot bunuelo. Carlos is very friendly, speaks excellent English and went out of his way to make sure we had a good time. I would recommend using this company and choosing Carlos for your guide.
