I have been to Taiwan multiple times but for business purposes and this time I decided to go on vacation with my son and experience what true Taiwan is about and decided to go with Garen. The best decision ever, you not only get to try great food but learn so many cultural and historical lessons about Taiwan that make the experience richer. I do not usually write unfavorable reviews, but after considering our experience I realized that others might want to have a better idea of what to expect. We have participated in many experiences during our years of traveling, and this was the first one that fell far short of our expectations. We are an adventurous family who specifically booked this tour the first day of our weeklong stay in Taipei. We were hoping it would help introduce us to unique foods, and we had asked in advance to go to places, and try foods, that might be challenging for foreigners to access. Instead we were taken to multiple tourist establishments within a 5 block area. This is not a walking tour, this did not expose us to unique foods and we did not learn anything about the foods of Taiwan. We attempted to ask questions about food, Taiwan, and even our tour guide; but questions were often ignored or answers were incoherent. Despite proficiency with English our guide often rambled and jumped from topic to topic (most having nothing to do with food). Not only did it not meet the stated goals, but we were generally uncomfortable throughout the experience. It was an unfortunate way to spend our first evening in Taiwan and I would advise others against taking this tour.Food tour

My husband and I travel extensively and have experienced all levels of tour guides and we both agreed that Garen is one of the best. She was engaging, knowledgeable, and prepared in every possible way…from answering our political questions about Taiwan’s history to giving us alcohol wipes before we ate. Totally enjoyed our evening with June. More than just sharing her knowledge of food (& tea), she shared her knowledge of Taiwan’s history. I enjoyed that as much as the flavors she shared with us.. June is also truly a “with local”, several of the places had long lines of customers, June knew the owners and we were served immediately. June was a fantastic guide. We didn’t get to eat the food usually highlighted in Taiwan (like beef noodle soup), but I appreciate her approach because we were able to try food from places that tourists would not think to visit - like a morning wet market. Garen was fabulous. We did a food tour but she mixed in a lot of interesting history, culture and commentary on modern Taiwan and it's people. I am also gluten free, which she accomodated as best she could (not easy in Taiwan), even dropping additional things off to one of the restaurants to prepare for me.Great mix of food, history and culture

Judy was very enthusiastic in sharing her knowledge of the local markets, restaurants and history of dishes and we thoroughly enjoyed everything that we ate. We couldn’t eat another thing and Judy was suggesting more food to try. She also gave us suggestions for the next day. This was an excellent way to start our week in Taipei - by getting an insight into the local food and culture. Garen was a wonderful host who introduced us to lots of delicious food as we walked the streets of Taipei. She was very knowledgeable and we appreciated her honest personal reflections thought-out the evening. The food and drink offerings were super tasty. There wasn't anything we weren't prepared to try or found we didn't like. And best of all was the relationships that Garen has developed with all the restaurant owners, which allowed for seamless ordering, and no standing in long queues. Food and Nigh Market: Fun and Interesting Garen was a wonderful tour guide. We did both “The 10 Tastings of Taipei: Street Food” and “A Magical Evening in Taipei: City Tour” back-to-back with Garen. She took us to some real nice places for our food tastings and while walking between places to eat, she shared a lot of interesting stories and facts about Taiwan. We followed that with an evening at the Night Market which was very fascinating with all kinds of food and things to look at and enjoy. What a great evening! We were 2 couples and booked the food tour on our first evening in Taipei. This was mainly to get to know the Taiwanese kitchen. The meeting with Garen was very friendly. My husband and I enjoyed our day with Garen exploring some areas of Taipei I had not visited before. She introduced us to some fruits of Taiwan which was fun. It’s great to try things we cannot readily get at home. Food is as important an expression of culture, society, history, and politics as it is "mere" taste. Especially in a place like Taipei, all these competing influences can become touchy topics. We really appreciated how Garen treated food as a way to approach broader topics of the past, present, and future of Taiwan.
