This was a truly outstanding trip made especially memorable by our wonderful guide, Anselmo. It felt more like a day out with a friend rather than a guide we’d only just met that morning. Anselmo took us to places in the Douro Valley that we would never have experienced without his knowledge. We also had a wonderful locals bar stop on our return to Porto at the end of the day - fabulous! He was so informative, friendly and easy going with a real desire to tailor make the day to suit our group of 7. The Patel de Natas, baked freshly that morning by Anselmo’s cycling friend and top class baker were, without doubt, the best we tasted in our time in Porto - and we ate many! This was such a lovely, generous thoughtful touch which made this tour extra special. The lunch stop was spectacular in every sense - the scenery, the venue, the food, the service and, of course, the wine and port. The most delicious meal we had during our stay in Porto. Anselmo was the perfect host/driver for a day trip to the Douro Valley. My husband and I had the absolute best day! Anselmo was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine and the valley. He provided an option to either do the river cruise or the scenic route at the start of our trip - we chose the scenic route and it did not disappoint as we were able to stop at a small town and tried a farmers port (which was delicious). We then stopped by two wineries (both had amazing views) - the first one a smaller producer where we had a fabulous lunch as well. The second one was a bit larger but with a great taste of port. I always like to book a day with a local guide when I travel, and we were looking for doing that in the the Douro Valley. But we were a fairly large group with young children, which made planning a bit more challenging, and not every guide could accommodate us. Luckily, Anselmo was incredibly solution-oriented, he found another driver and a mini van for us to explore the Douro. Anselmo is super knowledgeable and passionate about the Douro region and shared fun insights. The Douro Valley is also incredibly beautiful so really a must see while around Porto. We so enjoyed our day with Anselmo touring the Douro Valley — it was truly a highlight of our trip to Portugal, and we owe it all to Anselmo! My two adult daughters and I were staying in an Airbnb in the Centro Historico neighborhood and Anselmo kindly arranged to pick us up literally at our doorstep. He was right on time and got us settled in his very clean and comfortable car for our journey out to the Valley. We all immediately connected over his love of cycling (his bike tours sound amazing!) and our love of food and wine — very easy conversation and an enjoyable ride to the Valley. During the day, we visited sites we would have never managed to see on our own or with a group tour — the highest point in the Valley for the views, a small hilltop village for a local coffee shop for “farmers’ wine”, espresso and authentic Pasteis De Nata (Anselmo had picked these up from his neighborhood bakery that morning!), multiple vineyards and an elegant prix-fixe lunch he had arranged beforehand at one of the vineyard’s on-site restaurant (stunning views, delicious food and wine!). Anselmo also had all the best locations for photos picked out along the way and made sure to stop and let us capture some great memories. It was a very warm day in the Valley, but he kept us plenty comfortable with a/c, water and maybe even a small nap or two in the car between sites (day drinking is tiring!😂). If you are considering a tour with Anselmo, do not hesitate to book — he is one of the nicest people we met in all of Portugal!Perfect day in the Douro Valley!

Our day with Anselmo was quite literally AMAZING! He is a natural at what he does, and extremely knowledgeable and personable. Things we truly appreciated to make our day special: -Communicated well and was proactive -Very accommodating regarding a few extras I was interested in doing on the way to the Douro, and also giving Porto recommendations when I asked. -Took us to unbelievable viewpoints in the Douro Valley -Took us to wonderful, beautiful wineries and even a local village. Wonderful, fun and exciting 3h bike tour off the beaten path of Porto. If you want a different view of the city with interesting historical facts and a sporty mountain bike workout, this is the tour for you. Anselmo was engaging, fun, knowledgeable and knew all the right spots especially for the refreshments at the end of the tour which was highly enjoyable. Great view points with photo opportunities. We were so lucky to book Anselmo for our family's biking tour of Porto! With a husband that bikes regularly, discerning teens, and our fill of the typical tourist attractions, we wanted something off the beaten track. We got that from Anselmo. We (a group of 4) recently did the Douro Valley tour with Anselmo. In short, you cannot pick a better guide than Anselmo, he gave us a true VIP experience. He kept us entertained with some great facts and pointed out the sights on the drive to the valley. We stopped at a nice overlook spot for pictures upon entering the valley. Anselmo let us choose between a boat ride on the river or an extra wine tasting stop. We chose the boat ride. It was nice to be on the water and the views were great. After that we stopped at a nice winery and did a tasting. Anselmo very clearly explained all the ins and outs of port wine. Next Anselmo took us to an extremely beautiful hotel and restaurant for lunch. This was unexpected. The food was amazing and included more wine than we could drink. I was a little concerned that the bill was going to be huge given the quality of the food and how nice the place was. It turned out to be extremely reasonable in price. Finally we toured the wine making facilities at the same hotel. This was my favorite part as the facility is integrated into the side of the mountain and is architecturally spectacular. Anselmo is knowledgeable and answered all of our questions, but he was never overwhelming with too many facts or speeches. He strikes just the right balance. He also has the hook ups with the best places to visit. Use Anselmo for all of your Porto area tour needs. You cannot go wrong!Best Guide

The absolute best experience with Anselmo! He picked us up on time from our hotel in Porto and whisked us away to the Douro valley. Along the way he provided us with great information about the history of the area. We also stopped a few times for fantastic views,pictures and information about the vineyards. Anselmo is a great guide. He communicated with us the day before the trip, and was prompt to pick us up. As we drove from Barcelona to the Douro valley, he gave us several options on how to spend the day, to find the best fit for us. We had coffee and local pastries to start, and then an amazing scenic drive through the valley with several stops to get out and enjoy the beauty. We toured several wineries, had an amazing lunch, and enjoyed the history of the wine making in the valley that Anselmo provided. Overall it was a fantastic day, I can't recommend Anselmo enough!! Anselmo is fantastic! He is friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about port wine and the Douro Valley. It took about 1.5hrs to drive out to the valley from Porto. Anselmo was a great driver and the journey was overall very pleasant. In addition to taking us to two wineries in the valley, Anselmo also made a point to show us "the real Douro" and we stopped at a local cafe in the town for espresso, pastry and a small port wine. It was perhaps our favorite part of the tour! Anselmo took us down into the valley on a road he discovered as an avid biker. The road allowed us to drive down to the river through the terraces and vines with extraordinary views the whole way. Overall, such an amazing experience. We are already planning on recommending Anselmo to our friends who are visiting Porto in the fall. He was perfectly informative, but didn't overload us with details. The whole experience felt more like a local friend showing us around than a formal tour!Highly recommend the Douro Valley tour!

Anselmo did a fabulous job creating an amazing experience for my family. We left a little earlier than 9 am to beat the rush of other tourists and he look us wine tasting to two different wineries, each of which has great wine and fantastic views. We saw the most beautiful parts of the Douro and tasted port with some of the most amazing scenery. Our group of 4 recently had an AMAZING day tour of the Douro Valley with Alselmo celebrating my sisters birthday. He arrived promptly and introduced himself and we started the tour in his comfortable transportation. Alselmo shared history along the way and lots of laughs. During the tour we took a hour boat tour, which turned out to private, since no other passengers joined us. We brought a speaker with us, sang and sipped port down the Douro river. Next we visited CROFT vineyards, one of which we tasted port and he gave us the history of the types of port and a tour of the vines. He actually stopped at his local bakery and provided the traditional pastry during that tasting. We also visited Quinta Do Val Moreira vineyard that had the most amazing view of the Douro Valley. Alselmo scheduled a traditional Portuguese lunch, wines and dessert. Alselmo made it special by advising the winery that it was my sisters birthday and they made a cake just for her. After lunch we toured the winery and bought wine. Finally he took us to a look out site that had the most amazing view and then down to St. Vincent's church where we stopped next door for farmers port. I can't thank Alselmo enough for making my sister Colleens birthday so memorable. We had so many great laughs during the day. We all agreed that touring with Alselmo through the Douro Valley was the best day of our 10 day trip. Thank you Alselmo Amazing day with Alselmo

We (a group of 4 friends/2 couples) booked Anselmo for a private tour to the Douro Valley this October. The forecast was terrible but Anselmo was convinced we would be fine and he was right. As soon as we came through the mountains from the city side the skies cleared and we even had some sun. First of- Anselmo is a good driver so I could relax in the car which was great. Also his English is excellent which is a bonus. He is funny, friendly and knowledgeable about the area, landscape, history and about wine and port in particular. We learned a lot and he answered all of our questions patiently. He took us to incredible spots and we ate and drank like royalty and had a boat ride and just really enjoyed the atmosphere. There was no checking his watch and herding us along. We really felt like we could take our time and really experience the beauty around us. The personal touches really make a private tour so worthwhile. I would highly recommend Anselmo and his enthusiasm and love for his city/country and region. We had a wonderful authentic experience, a full day out in Duoro Valley with Anselmo. He's very knowledgeable and personable, he introduced us to extra dry white port and portotonics, among so many other things. We visited a small local town, where we saw them making port, of course we had to try some farmers port, along with delicious Pasel de Nata. We went to two port wineries and had a lovely delicious lunch, with a Duoro Valley view. From the moment we were picked up from our hotel in Porto we knew we would have a wonderful day. Anselmo was an excellent guide and companion, and took us to places off the beaten track of the tour buses. Fabulous morning coffee in a small village, the best custard tart in all of Portugal (provided by Anselmo), an enormous glass of the local farmer’s port mid morning followed by some interesting winery port tastings plus a generous lunch all made up for a day we will remember. My husband and I had the most spectacular Sunday in the Douro Valley with Anselmo as our guide. He was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible in catering to our likes and dislikes. We chose to do a drive on a scenic route instead of the boat ride, and Anselmo showed us some of the best spots in the Douro Valley. We got some nice photos too! He took us to two estates, I believe to be among the best in the Valley, and we got a personal tour as well as a taste of the best wines and port. We would definitely recommend Anselmo as a guide. 3 of us just had the best day in the stunning Douro Valley. Anselmo our guide was amazing. We learnt so much from him about the Wine / Port making in the area, with wonderful samples along the way. After witnessing the most beautiful views of the valley and the river meandering through, with only birds to listen (stunning) we stopped at a tiny village. Anselmo produced the freshest Pastel De Nata ever to have with our farmers Port sample. The day just got better and better. Anselmo was a fantastic and knowledgeable host. He was warm and funny throughout the whole day and we shared some big laughs. During the drive from Porto to the Douro Valley we stopped off at a few places and Anselmo introduced us to the history of the valley in manageable and interesting chunks. Sometimes tour guides can engulf you with a dizzying amount of information but Anselmo hit the sweet spot of delivering information while allowing us take in the beauty of the place. We then enjoyed an hour's boat ride on the Doura. It is as wonderful seeing the vineyards looking up from the river, as it is seeing them from the top of the valley. After the boat trip we had a short drive to the first vineyard for our Port tasting session. We received further information about the Port wines themselves and their production methods. Also how grading and classification works which will be very useful for buying port when we return home from holiday. An important addition to this was the Pastéis de nata that Anselmo brought all the way from Gaia. The best I've ever eaten, and I've eaten A LOT! After the tasting we had a quick drive to look at the vines up close and to learn about the methods of pruning/training of the vines. Again this was easy to understand and an enjoyable way to spend 25 minutes. Anselmo then took us for a three course lunch with wine at a second vineyard. The food and wine were exceptional, the service impeccable. You pay for lunch which was a ridiculously low price of €32 per person. If we'd paid twice that it would still have been excellent value. We then had a tour through the new wine cellars that the hotel have constructed. We did an impromptu wine tasting (at our request) and came away with some beautiful wines, again at surprisingly low prices for wines of this quality. And, sadly, came the time to return to Porto, interrupted by a cycle race!. Those hills look a little steep to me but if you like that sort of thing Anselmo runs bike tours as well. On the journey back we got some great recommendations for places to eat and also where to get great coffee (I'm writing this from 7g Café over a delicious Brazilian V60). The whole day was wonderful from start to finish and my wife and were a little sad when it came to end. A perfect day

We had a fantastic day in the beautiful Douro Valley with Anselmo as our guide and driver. He is engaging, funny and very knowledgeable about the area’s history and wine production. He went out of his way to show us sites that not every tourist is likely to see. His van was comfortable and he took care of every detail. Anselmo was a bit surprised that we didn't know much about port wine, and that we booked him more because of our interest in the beautiful landscape of the Douro Valley. He explained to us everything about wine making during a tasting with a fantastic view of the scenic vineyards. Anselmo gave us time for taking pictures and stopped his car when we wanted it. We took the boat trip that we really enjoyed. The icing on the cake was the delicious lunch at a quinta. Highly recommended, thanks for the beautiful day.A beautiful day

We had an amazing day with Anselmo! On his suggestion we opted for the scenic route and an extra tasting instead of the boattrip, this was a great choice. We also got the lunch option, this was a very nice three course lunch with great wine and port. Anselmo is very knowledgeable about the region and knows just the right places to go to. Moreover, Anselmo is a very nice and fun guy to be around. All this resulted in a beautiful and relaxed day in Douro valley. One we would definitely recommend! We had an amazing day with Anselmo. He took us into streets along the Douro Valley that were essentially uninhabited(being a cyclist he has discovered these areas). He took us to spots that had amazing panoramic views of the Valley with the winding river below. Anselmo is a charming guy with contacts all over the Valley. I cannot say enough good things about him! He gave us an amazing memory.An amazing day with a Anselmo!!!!

Anselmo provided my wife and I with a memorable day tour of the Douro Valley. He picked us up on time at the pre-arranged meeting spot and had water available for us in the car. We opted to skip the boat tour portion of the trip, so Anselmo took us on some winding scenic roads and also stopped at multiple scenic spots to allow us to take many photos. Anselmo was very knowledgeable about grape growing and wine making and gave us behind the scenes tours at each winery stop. Coffee in the morning and all wine tastings and lunch were excellent. This was a perfect private tour to help celebrate our anniversary. Excellent Day in the Douro Valley

We recently went on a private tour of the Douro Valley with Anselmo. It was a wonderful tour! Anselmo was friendly, very knowledgeable, accommodating to our requests, great with our two kids (4 and 14), and very easy to spend the day with. He took us to some beautiful spots to sample port, see amazing views, go on a boat ride, and have lunch over-looking the valley. We all agreed it was the highlight of our trip, and we'd highly recommend Anselmo as a tour guide!Wonderful Tour!

Our group absolutely loved our visit in the Douro Valley. All communications with Anselmo were clear, timely and helpful. He went the extra mile to accommodate our needs, including arranging for a change in date (for a sunny day - thanks for the great couple we joined) and even offering a bonus visit and extra time visiting; it was outstanding. Anselmo is an excellent driver. The vehicle (a van) was perfect for our group; very comfortable. Anselmo shared his knowledge of the region, of wineries, of history with passion and humour. He made it interesting and lively. We had some treats, amazing visits, laughters, good food and wine and lasting memories. All members of our group strongly recommend a tour with Anselmo. Our day with Anselmo touring the Douro Valley was amazing! Our itinerary was very well thought-out and paced perfectly. Our first stop was at a beautiful viewpoint, then a small village for coffee where Anselmo brought pastries for us to share. We visited two wineries for tastings and enjoyed a delicious lunch with a beautiful view. Anselmo is a wonderful guide and has a lot of knowledge about wine-making and the valley. Sometimes words are insufficient to describe an amazing highlight in your life. This is how I feel about touring Douro Valley with Anselmo.. the mighty duck (and San Anselmo to us). He has the gift for making you feel like friends from the start. Your tour will be filled with hidden scenic gems, intimate visits to taste and learn about Port and a few laughs!!! If debating about “investing” in a private tour, you will get your money’s worth 10 fold.. I promise you that!!!!! Obligata / Obligato San Anselmo Absolutely Love Anselmo!!!

Anselmo was an amazing tour guide and so knowledgeable about the Duoro Valley and wine process. He picked us up right on time and was very friendly! Our first stop was the highest viewpoint looking out over the valley. It was breathtaking! Anselmo knows all the good photo spots. Then, we stopped in a small village at a coffee shop and had espresso, farmers port, and some delicious pastel de nata. We loved seeing the village and learning some history about it. The first Quinta is also where we had an incredible lunch that Anselmo ordered for us with wine and port pairings. Then, we visited a second property that had an amazing view and such a beautiful patio area to enjoy the day and sip some port. Anselmo answered all our questions and we enjoyed getting to know him. I highly recommend Anselmo and this tour. We left with a new friend and a wealth of knowledge about the Duoro Valley. Thank you!Best Tour of our Trip!

We could not recommend a better guide. We had the most wonderful Duoro valley trip with Anselmo. He has a great sense of humour, so much knowledge and was flexible and accommodating when we asked for a last minute change to the itinerary. It was fun, fascinating and the valley was so beautiful. He chose a perfect place for Port wine tasting and delicious lunch. We highly recommend Anselmo and his vehicle is comfortable and good for 4 tall guests. Perfect tour with Anselmo

Before our day even began, Anselmo had been wonderful about responding to all of my questions and messages. He responded promptly and with great information and allowed us to set the day as we wanted to! His English is very good and we were given much information about the valley and about wine/port. His depth of knowledge is great! Our first tasting spot was so beautiful and incredible! He chose it based on some of the things I told him we were looking for and it was perfect. He stopped at gorgeous points to allow us great views and pictures and never seemed to be in a hurry to keep us going. Our lunch spot had a spectacular view and the food was wonderful! It was such a beautiful location! He showed us the wine making area and explained everything in detail. Towards the end of the day he allowed us to walk across a footbridge in order to see more beautiful views! Anselmo is a wonderful host, and I highly recommend him!!Wonderful, beautiful day!

Anselmo customised the tour to our preferences and was very knowledgeable about port and Porto! Overall he was lovely to talk to and very attentive to our needs, making sure we were feeling okay throughout the tour. :) He also bought us pasteis de natas from a bakery near his home to go with our first wine tasting, which was delicious! The best tour we took in Porto, all thanks to Anselmo :)Best tour in Porto witn Anselmo!
