Right out of the gate, Priscila graciously allowed my wife and I to be 30 minutes late. She is very knowledgeable with anything and everything Porto, as well as Portugal in general. Our tour of the city center in Porto with Priscilla was just what we were looking for. Priscilla‘s flexibility during the tour and her insights into landmarks that we had passed by before, but never knew the significance, was the best. We had the absolute pleasure of exploring Porto with Jorge as our guide—and what an incredible experience it was! From the very beginning, Jorge made us feel like locals, not just tourists. He’s knowledgeable, passionate about his city, and full of great stories that brought Porto’s history and culture to life. We started our tour at the iconic Mercado do Bolhao and enjoyed hand crafted wines, meats, and cheeses. Later we visited São Bento train station, where Jorge pointed out the beautiful tile work and shared its historical significance. Then we wandered through some of Porto’s most breathtaking cathedrals and churches—each one more stunning than the last, and all enriched by Jorge’s insights. What really set this tour apart, though, were the local spots Jorge introduced us to. We ducked into tiny hole-in-the-wall cafés and visited out of the way old town passageways that we never would’ve found on our own. We sampled classic Portuguese dishes—everything from fresh-baked pastries to savory local specialties. Each bite was unforgettable, and each stop felt authentically Porto. We so enjoyed our afternoon with professional and conversational Jorge - he immediately “got us” - accommodating our arrival at and introducing us to the Bolhao Market - where we ate and drank several times - cheese and carpaccio and seafood - taking in the sensory experience sprinkled with his personal history visiting the Market (where he obviously knows the owner-vendors). We are city-loving walkers, and Jorge’s content and pace perfectly matched ours - and though we booked this as an introductory food tour, we knew that Jorge would provide more - he shared along our historic and neighborhood route most engaging information about Porto history and sights. We concluded our tour at a locals-only establishment, where we truly could have stayed into the later afternoon for both another meal and more getting to know Jorge - and certainly anther cold carafe of Vino Verde as our table was right next to the gracious restaurant owners who were taking in their late lunch before dinner service. That said, Jorge offered where we might eat additionally later that evening, and we obviously did exactly that - another great culinary, Porto-specific restaurant where we again felt perfectly at home and hosted. We were lucky enough to have Rui as our guide for the walking tour of Porto. His knowledge of and enthusiasm for his home city was outstanding. His approach was relaxed and unhurried and the choice of a traditional Portuguese tavern for lunch was a good one. Had an excellent tour with Jorge - despite very heavy rain! We started in the Mercado do Bolhão with a glass of vinho verde and a cheese platter followed by some beef carpaccio and tartare. Jorge was very friendly and informative about Portuguese food and life, showing us sights we would otherwise not have seen, such as the railway station and making suggestions for other visits. We went to a local restaurant for a sandwich made with slow cooked pork that melted in the mouth and finally another local restaurant for a pastel de Nata. Delicious!
