We booked a Spanish-speaking guide in Manila because we wanted to fully understand the history and details of the city in our own language. John was friendly and attentive when he met us, but from the beginning he explained that although he could read and write Spanish, he preferred to conduct the tour in English. In our opinion, he relies on translation tools and is not able to guide fluently in Spanish. We made it clear that we had specifically chosen a Spanish-speaking guide for this reason. From that moment on, it was noticeable that he did not feel comfortable leading the tour, and he chose places where he did not need to explain much. For example, he took us to the Natural History Museum, which we do not think is the most appropriate place to learn about the history of Manila and the Philippines. He did not seem to have a structured plan or narrative. When he briefly mentioned José Rizal, we had to ask him to explain who Rizal was and to provide some context. His answers were very short, and it became clear that he could not conduct a proper tour in Spanish. Given the situation, we told him to switch to English, and while he spoke more in that language, there was still no clear storyline connecting the history of the Philippines from Spanish colonization to independence. At one point, he would simply point us to read signs instead of explaining. Once in Intramuros, it seemed as if the tour was ending, so I asked if we would visit Fort Santiago. He looked uncertain and pointed in another direction, which gave the impression that he did not have full knowledge of the places. Eventually we went there, but he had not brought any cash to pay for the entrance tickets — something quite surprising for a guide who supposedly does this tour regularly. In summary, John was polite but he is not prepared to conduct tours in Spanish, nor did he seem fully organized to provide a high-quality experience. ⸻ ¿Quieres que te la deje en un tono más suave y diplomático (para no sonar demasiado duro) o en este tono más crítico y directo?

I organized a tour for a few Spanish colleagues visiting the Philippines for the first time. Jhon Mar not only made it informative and enjoyable for them, he went above and beyond the engagement by spending almost the entire day with them and going to places of interest that were not originally in the schedule.
