We have eaten our way through Lima learning how to cook ceviche and lomo saltado in the most authentic way possible which is inside a local’s kitchen in their own home. Choji made us feel welcomed and has so much love and passion for his art. We had 4 kids with us and they all loved preparing each dish and so much as eating it. We also went on a food tour with our favorite guide, Choji, who took us to local spots we would have never discovered on our own . ❤️ing Peru, it’s good and people and Choji has a lot to do with it. We would recommend him to anyone from any country! Choji is best tour guide we have ever had!

I purchased the cooking lesson as an anniversary gift for my wife & I and we couldn't be happier with the whole experience! Choji began the lesson by giving us some insight into the culinary history of Peru and the dishes we were cooking. Choji was a great host and a great chef, and was able to provide us with direction if we had to make substitutions for a couple of the recipes. He walked us through each of the dishes, explaining some tips and tricks to making them. We were exposed to some dishes we hadn't heard of previously, and will definitely be using the recipes from the lesson again. The food was INCREDIBLE -- once the lesson was over and our dinner was prepared we sat down to enjoy our authentic Peruvian dinner. Everything tasted great and was cooked perfectly thanks to Choji's instruction. Choji did a great job at guiding us the whole way through, and I couldn't recommend the whole experience more! 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience, a unique gift idea, or anyone looking to gain some insight into Peruvian cuisine.Great Lesson and Great Instructor

I booked this tour as part of my birthday week celebration. For one thing, I love how the virtual aspect of the tour made it possible to do something fun with my family on the other side of the US. To make everything even better, Choji made this cooking class so special and fun. He picked a perfect menu which had us happily groaning and contentedly full from the comida rica. His patient teaching style helped each of us make a fantastic meal regardless of our respective skill levels. Throughout the lesson we also enjoyed learning about the history of each dish and their ties to Lima and Peru in general. The whole tour was very comprehensive with no shortage of fun and appreciation for food. I highly recommend Choji’s tour to everyone especially while we’re waiting for travel to reopen!!Pure heaven

Our little group had an amazing time with Choji. He is highly knowledgeable, extremely patient, well organised and he adapted from the very beginning to the various levels of kooking experiences we are having. Both of the recipes were stunning, even though he didn't have an easy task since part of our group are vegetarian and we have a couple of allergies also. The ingredients were easy to find even in Denmark. We loved the stories about local habits, Peruvian history and also about his origin. Choji is really personable, friendly, and helpful, so I highly recommend having him as a guide in Peruvian cuisine. :) Heart-warming time with an amazing chef

We booked this experience as a gift for our friends that moved recently to a different country. This experience has been more than perfect, specially during COVID times: have an online catch up together, learn about Peruvian culinary history and put in place all our cooking abilities! We had a great feeling that we were traveling to Lima and cooking together at Choji's kitchen. We truly enjoyed the whole session, from the background of the dishes we were preparing, to the great tips that Choji shared regarding ingredients. The recipes were simply AMAZING, we enjoyed preparing them a lot, will certainly prepare these dishes many times in the future. We would totally recommend this experience with Choji, it was a pleasure and super fun!!Amazing experience!

I booked this experience last minute because our anniversary plans fell through. Since my boyfriend’s trip to Peru got canceled due to the pandemic, I decided to bring him a bit of Peru virtually, and we were not disappointed. This was our first virtual WithLocals experience and it was amazing! Choji is so friendly, warm, and enthusiastic. He provided information about the dishes we cooked, and patiently guided us on how to prepare each dish. It was fun to chat about his amazing country and get insight into the local cities and activities to check out for when we do visit. We highly recommend booking an experience with Choji! We were blown away by the food too, so delicious! Bring Peru to You!

I have been to Peru, and this was the best Peruvian food I have had outside of the country, and I cooked it! Choji is a wonderful host, who mixes his chef skills with history knowledge so as you cook you also learn about the culture of Peru, it is a 2x1 experience. Do not be intimated by the menu, he makes you feel so comfortable and you can substitute many things and still have a wonderful dish. This is a great family activity, date night, or thing to do on your own. You really do not want to miss this experience! Thank you Choji.Amazing cultural experience

We had the best time!! There were 3 couples that participated, and even though we were physically apart in different parts of the US, it felt like we were all together. Our host was fantastic!! He was so passionate about his culture, history, and food -- I loved listening to what he had to say! He guided us through several recipes and was fabulous about accommodating tweaks to the recipes if we had to use a couple substitute ingredients. And the final result was simply superb dining! I would love to do this again.Sue

My friends and I had an amazing evening with Choji! He was incredibly knowledgeable, easygoing, and broke down the recipes easily for all levels of cooks. I loved all the contextual tidbits he talked about throughout the class about Peru, his own background, how the flavors reflect Peruvian tastes and why, and more. The meal itself was delicious. Can't wait to make that ceviche and spicy potato cake again! I would HIGHLY recommend Choji's class to anyone interested in learning more about Peru and Peruvian food!Incredible experience with Choji!

This is my second time taking a class with Choji — the first we did all vegetarian and this time, we did meat. He is a wonderful teacher who is extremely patient with less experienced cooks. He gives a great history of Peruvian cuisine and is able to adapt/be flexible to his students' needs in the kitchen. Teaching over video isn't always easy, but Choji does it with grace and aplomb! Would definitely recommend his classes to anyone who'd like a fun culinary challenge.Amazing Flavors!

We had a wonderful evening with Choji, who led us expertly through making 4 dishes, to make a fantastic Peruvian feast! Firstly Choji showed us how to make Pisco Sours- the easy way!- and while we sipped those he explained the history of and influences on Peruvian food. Then it was in to action- with lots of useful chef tips on prepping and presentation. The resulting ceviche, lomo Saltado and causa was amazing and something we will definitely cook again- accompanied by pisco sours! It was my birthday, and it was a great way to celebrate with two sets of old friends who are currently locked down 200 miles away. I would strongly recommend Choji, 10/10 Very many thanks for a marvellous evening!🍹🍋🍠🌶🍅🧅🧄🌽🥩🥔Fantastic peruvian experience!

WOW! My wife , 2 daughters and I booked a cooking class with Choji and were blown away with how impressive he made our experience. He more than exceeded our expectations. First, he customized our dinner to include my vegetarian wife then he went an extra step to help us find ingredients in OUR city. On the day of the class we found out he was trained in Japan as well as Peru and his cooking combined these two flavors into a combination that tasted deliciously original. I highly recommend this class to anyone regardless of how adept you are in the kitchen. It is a wonderful substitute for a night out in a restaurant. Peruvian/Asian Fusion!

I arranged a birthday surprise for my partner during the pandemic by signing us up for Choji's cooking class along with six other friends who all dialed in to join. Choji was positive, full of energy, extremely knowledgeable about the history of Peruvian cuisine, and great at keeping all of us on task during various stages of the class (which is hard to do on screen — but he rocked it!). I highly, highly recommend Choji if you're looking for a gastronomic escape from home!Memorable pandemic birthday celebration!

My daughter (in NYC) and I (in Indiana) were devastated when our long-planned & awaited trip to Peru was cancelled because of The Virus. She learned about this cooking class and arranged for us to do it last Saturday, It was awesome! (as is my daughter!) Chogi was so knowledgeable about Peruvian history, and masterfully led us in the preparation of a delicious meal. We began with cocktails, which was perfect refreshment as we spent the next 2 hours preparing two dishes. The extensive list of ingredients was emailed to us, as well as a list of all tools & utensils needed. We set up our respective kitchens & face-timed throughout the day. Plan to devote your entire day for the whole process, including downloading & “rehearsing” with the app). We could not access the app with the link we were sent, So, we went directly to the “App Store” & downloaded it. Chogi also has a great sense of humor, which made for a light-hearted atmosphere that appealed to both of us. The time flew by! After our class ended, my daughter & I sat down in our own dining rooms with our respective partners and laptops & had dinner together! I enthusiasticallly recommend this! Excellent!!!!

Choji was a great instructor and we very much enjoyed the lesson. He went above and beyond, sharing local-only knowledge about Peruvian produce, culture, language, and people. The choice of dishes were a great introduction to Peruvian cuisine, and they turned out well despite the class being held remotely! I really enjoyed the food we cooked. Although we were slow in doing the food preparation, Choji was extremely patient and kept re-assuring us to take our time. Definitely recommend this experience!Awesome, patient, informative instructor!

This was the first time we had Peruvian cuisine, and by the end of the class all we wanted to do was to sit down and eat. Choji patiently explained all the steps, ingredients, and history of the recipes to us. I wish that I could upload photos of my experience here. The food was absolutely amazing, and I am definitely making it again (probably next week). Thank you so much Choji. We had the most enjoyable time cooking with you, and we loved the food that we made. It was completely new to us, but delicious and worth every minute we spent with you. Our experience with Choji was fantastic. He gave us different options for the menu (meat, fish, veggie options...) I highly encourage you to try the quinotto! It was hands down the best quinoa we ever had, and it was a very local recipe, totally different to what we would have cooked on our own. Choji was kind, fun and very engaging. We also had lomo saltado with causa and we will be cooking it again. Do not hesitate to book this experience :) ¡Gracias por todo!Discover Peruvian food from home

We had a great time with Choji and learned to make Ceviche, Lomo Saltado, Causa, and last but not least a Pisco Sour. Everything tasted genuinely delicious, especially the Lomo Saltado. Having traveled through Peru and having tried a lot of Lomos, I'm happy to say this one ranks in my top 3. Choji took a lot of time to help us prepare the various dishes and provided interesting background on traditions. When preparing so many recipes, the multitasking aspect can be a bit overwhelming. Thankfully Choji orchestrated this well and guided us through the process thoroughly. We had some issues with the internet connection, but Choji did not mind repeating matters. Book this course if you're into good food!Great Peruvian cooking!

My wife, daughter and I had a great experience cooking with Choji. We made ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa some of the oldest dishes in Peru. We started with a Pisco Sour to loosen up, but I could not find Pisco, so Vodka was the substitute. This helped us get ready for ceviche which seems difficult, but Choji made it simple. The combination of fish, onion and juices made it delicious. Choji instructed us on the proper way to chop our vegetables and season the meat. This was in preparation for the lomo saltado which is a beef stir fry served over a smashed potato. With the ceviche chilling, we could cook the potatoes and make a chili paste to combine when smashing. The potatoes were a hit due to the spice and oil with the butter and milk. The stir fry was quick and easy and before we knew it we were eating. Choji was a super host and gave us plenty of information about his family, background and history of Peru. He speaks four languages and is very bright. He mixed Peruvian history with the dishes we prepared and the vegetables we used. Virtually all the food was easy to find or we had it. His description of the dish and how to prepare was un-rushed and easy to follow. He was always in control and patient with us. We feel we can now make these dishes on our own. We hope to travel to Peru and meet Choji to truly thank him. It was a fun and great experience. Cooking with Choji

• Punctuality • Historical background • Multi-generational attention • Religious Respect • Hidden Flavor Treasures I booked Choji to discover Lima from the historical and food perspective. My husband kids, 18 and 14 years old and myself, had a blast with him at the 10 tasting of Lima and visiting the Convent of Saint Domingo. First, I dreamed of visiting Saint Martin de Porres, my favorite saint. And my husband wanted to try the flavors of the world-famous Peruvian food. My kids, teenagers, just wanted to have a good time, take pictures and a memorable trip. Fortunately, we´ve got everything! Choji´s punctuality was a 100% Started not with food, but with some geographical history that helped us to contextualize the tasting of Peru. Then, walking through downtown Lima, enjoying architecture and start tasting sweets and salties, amazing! My dreamed visit to Saint Martin de Porres and having the chance to talk to my family and Choji about the reasons for my esteem to that incredible human being, get to know this incredible convent with that impressive architecture that took our breath away, for me was the peak of the tour. I highly appreciate how respectful Choji was with my religion and beliefs. But my family peaks varied: Ana (18 years old) enjoyed trying tamales, very different from our country tamales. David (14 years old) loved the experience of being in a century restaurant and entering to the kitchen to salute the team. My husband loved the municipal market and talking about football with Choji. The places to taste Peru flavours were really hidden treasures of downtown Lima. Wouldn´t be possible to get there with google maps 😊 A wonderful downtown Lima day with Choji

Choji was an awesome tour guide. He was full of information about Lima and walked us around to neighborhoods, streets, restaurants, and areas that we would have never been able to do on our own. His historic knowledge was impressive and was the perfect way to start our Lima vacation. We loved visiting the alleys of Chinatown - we would have never found this and the food was delicious! He even spent an extra half hour with us above and beyond the three hour tour. Time went fast, we were never bored. It was awesome. Awesome Tour of Lima!

My wife and I booked a tasting tour with Choji and cannot be happier. We were able to communicate before the tour using WhatsApp and that made coordinating our meeting time and location easier. Choji is the perfect tour guide for the 10 tastings of Lima. He is a Peruvian with Japanese roots which provides very interesting insights. Choji has also travelled extensively so he is able to add his experience in other places to contrast with Peru. On top of that, his grandmother had a bakery right in the city center and he grew up in that area. As a result, you get an inside look with his deep connections. The tour covers a lot of the "daily" food of typical Peruvians and also multiple districts (new, old, Chinatown, and the market). We walked for nearly 3 hours and ate a lot of food! At each stop, Choji doesn't just explain what the food is, he talked about the history of the store and the owners. He took us into the kitchen of the oldest bar in Lima and explained how they are all descendants of the workers that took over when the owners left. At each stop, he introduced each owner and you just feel like he is sharing his relationships with you. You can sense the pride he has in sharing his insights but also in ensuring that we had a good tour. Unlike some of the other tours, Choji will also participate in eating the food at certain stops and you just see how much he enjoys the food! Choji also shared his experience growing up in Peru as a Okinawan which was very interesting to me. With the Japanese having such a big influence in the cuisine of Peru and Choji having culinary experience, it was a great opportunity to learn. This tour is a good way to learn the local foods of Lima. Choji doesn't just provide the food but adds his fun and immersive personality throughout the tour. I enjoyed our 3 hours with Choji! Choji is the local expert!

I purchased 2 food tours with Choji. Of the 10 “bites” to try 8 of them were sweets. On top of that each place we visited he ordered one piece of food that me and the other person I was with had to share, even though we both spent money on it. As if the portions weren’t small enough he proceeded to taste all of our food. Where it crossed the line was when he ordered our one shared plate of ceviche and tasted it then double dipped with out asking and ate nearly half the plate. The price is not worth it for the quantity nor quality of food. The total price of the food consumed could not be more than $20 since every place we went to was one dish or bite for the both of us and him apparently. We were informed that our only complaint would be that we would be “so full” after the tour which was not the case at all. That being said, he was overall very friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining but not suitable for our taste. Mixed review

Our family had a great time with Choji as he showed us some hidden gems in the Centro Historico we never would have found on our own. Choji is so well known in this neighborhood, it's like he's the unofficial mayor. Because of those relationships he was able to take us deep into the markets, giving us the history of the families that run the food stalls and a better understanding of the role each dish plays in Peruvian culture. We couldn't have asked for a better host or more fun packed into in three hours of eating and exploring. Choji is a great host.

We are touring South America and we love Lima, Peru the most thanks to Choji. He adapted our local tour to fit our needs. We saw little places with family histories going back four generations. We would never have found them on our own, nor would we have understood their significance and contribution to local culture. There were so many different flavours on this tour! Choji was such an enthusiastic guide. His passion for Lima came through the entire tour. We saw parts of Lima you won't see on a Viator tour. It was personalized and fun and educational. Don't hesitate to spend your day with Choji!Fantastic journey through Lima

More about me

I would tell you some of my passions in life, and hobbies. I worked as a Sushi and Peruvian chef in different parts of the world such as Melbourne, Sydney, and Tokyo, but Lima, my hometown has always call my name due to its history and food culture. I also was a surf instructor back in my early years and now I am working as a travel coordinator for over a decade for private companies and government entities in the tourist sector. My tour will be full of fun and interesting facts about my city and I can't wait to show it to everyone.
