We had a great day while on tour with Gustavo. We learned so much from him about Portugal and the history of the people and this great country. Portugal has an incredible history and Gustavo has an excellent grasp of Portugal through the ages. Being picked up in a Mercedes right outside our apartment was just the beginning of a fantastic day ahead. Gustavo is a very intelligent, well-informed guide any visitor to Porto would die for. He drove us to Coimbra and showed us around the University, Royal Palace, Cathedral and the city itself. We also visited a beautiful hunting palace which we would probably not have seen if we were on a regular group tour. He went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and engaged us in scintillating conversations. Spending time with locals is a great opportunity to indulge in the culture and vibe of any city. Gustavo's awareness and wisdom around Porto and Portugal was both refreshing and heart-warming. The highlight of this tour would definitely be the meal we experienced with him at a traditional Portuguese restaurant where we enjoyed soup, cozido and grilled piri piri chicken. Everything about this experience with Gustavo was fabulous. He delivered an outstanding day of touring through Coimbra and Aveiro. We visited churches, monasteries and the University and best of all, Gustavo predicted what we would like to see based on our early conversations. This meant that throughout the day, he tailored the experience to our historical interests. We also had a fantastic lunch at a local restaurant and Gustavo kept the conversation flowing all day. Gustavo made our day enjoyable and informative. He entertained us all day with history and stories of the area. All during the tour we knew we had a remarkable guide. This was certainly confirmed when my mother realized she had left her purse at the last stop. Gustavo took us on a private tour of Coimbra and Aviero. First of all, his English is EXCELLENT, so no issues with idiomatic expressions or confusion with meaning. Second, his command of Portuguese history and culture was amazing, and even more importantly, he is a wonderful teacher! He loves his country, and his passion for it's unique history comes through. He often shared both legend/tradition, as well as what historians believe to be what actually happened. He also introduced us to delicious local cuisine, at places owned by dear friends of his. Let me start by saying that had we met Gustavo prior to booking other guides; we wouldn't have. Gustavo is a true renaissance man. While we have experienced guides who know their history I truly believe that none can impart it in style and delivery the way he does. Think about a teacher or professor that you had in school and couldn't wait until it was time for the class. That's Gustavo. Earlier I said that he was a true renaissance man. He not only knows the FUll story of the intricacies of the sites you attend with him but he also knows the history of the people who occupied them, and how they came to be there. It's not all history. He even thinks he can tell jokes! All told we spent about 19 hours with Gustavo and enjoyed every minute. For anything you want to do in Porto, Book Gustavo. We had a very good day in Coimbra and Aveiro. The university library in Coimbra was the top of the day but also e.g student prison, doctoral defense etc in Coimbra were interesting issues. Aveiro was less interesting but the canals and art nouveau houses were worth of seeing. Gustavo is wide-ranging expert. Our discussions covered not only Portugal but all the issues between ”earth and heaven” both in Europe and outside Europe. He also succeeded to find a lunch restaurant which was exactly what we wanted to and recommended excellent wine etc. In the nice sunshine and in his kind, polite and refreshing company we had also fun. He is a good driver and the car was comfortable. Last but not least his English is excellent. Our trip with Gustavos black and safely driven Mercedes to Coimbra and Aveiro was an unforgettable experience. Great tour, Great guy, Premium service! Gustavo is more than a tour guide-he is the fascinating, well-educated, business savvy, well-connected in the business community, sophisticated and speaks knowledgeably on current world affairs. He is the guy you want at your next dinner party! He has been guide to influential world renowned people before us and we were lucky enough to have him as our guide. We booked Gustavo to take us on a full day tour from Porto to Lisbon. Gustavo picked us up at our cruise ship, on the Douro river, on schedule. As we got in to his spotless Mercedes-Benz, he started by asking us what our preferences were and what we wanted to do, customizing it completely. He speaks excellent English so communication worked perfectly. He even gave me some Portuguese language tips. We went to have a great visit to Palácio do Buçaco, a beautiful early 20th century palace, where we had a fantastic coffee break. This place is a treasure and on the UNESCO list to be saved. Most guides would not have the ingenuity to gain this privileged access. During the trip he was fun, knowledgeable, well informed in various subjects so we never had a dull moment, which made the 10 hours tour fly. We felt like we were friends for a long time. For lunch we had the succulent piglet, a Portuguese delicacy, roasted with a delicious crispy skin. To drink: red champagne. We never had tasted, or even seen red champagne, and it worked perfectly with the piglet. What a treat! I told him we did not want to go to any tourist traps and only wanted authentic experiences and we did! Next we visited Batalha, a gothic monastery that became the first Royal Portuguese medieval pantheon. It’s the home of the tombs of the 15th 16th century kings and queens of Portugal. Amazing! We got to Lisbon at 7pm feeling that we need to come back and have him show us more of his surprisingly beautiful Country. Highly recomended. Gustavo was terrific. He is knowledgeable about Portuguese history and in Coimbra he showed all the sites that were important. He asked several times if I was pleased with the trip and we even changed the second half of the trip to the Douro valley instead of Aveiro which was the right choice for me. We drove over 350 kilometers but we had good conversations all the route. He really wants his guest to be happy with the tour and I greatly appreciate that. Gustavo was so great! Telling us all about both the history and culture as he took around to Porto, Coimbra, and Aveiro made the trip so engaging! He spent a great deal of time talking with us and making sure to explain in great detail each place we visited. He was especially thorough in telling us the history of Coimbra University. Gustavo took us to a hidden gem of a restaurant for lunch where we had an incredible chicken lunch that also had a great historical story. Then he booked us a boat ride to tour the canals in Aveiro. We went on 7 daytrips with different companies and guides in and around Porto and Lisbon, and I can honestly say out of the 7, Gustavo was the best! He is a walking encyclopedia!! Where do I even begin? Gustavo is beyond amazing. He went out of his way all day to make sure we had the best time. First upon meeting us, he told us that he didn’t think the tour my sister and I picked was going to be the best choice for us. He told us about a tour in S Leonardo da Galafura. He said it was a must see if we were only in Porto for a short time. Boy, was he right! It was beyond what we could have imagined! He also went out of his way to make sure we always had a water, food, or were comfortable. He was so accommodating! He took us to spots that only the locals knew about, that had the most spectacular views. He was fun, funny, genuine and very knowledgeable! We truly could not have asked for a better guide! Gustavo was punctual, met myself, my wife and daughter and we toured the whole day in his comfortable car, he showed us the pretty city of Aveiro, a sort of mini Venice with a small network of canals and then the historic university city of Coimbra, a bit like something straight out of a Harry Potter movie, both interesting places to visit, in between the two Gustavo took us to the town of Mealhaad and to his favourite restaurant where we feasted on their speciality, roast suckling pig, waited about 40minutes for a table, but wow was it worth it, delicious is an understatement!! Thanks to Gustavo and his wealth of knowledge we finished the tour feeling priveledged to take home with us some very special memories of a Portugal. What a wonderful tour. Our family of 4 toured Aveiro, coimbra and vila do conde with Gustavo. He picked us up at our residence. We had lunch at a local historical restaurant which we would have never found on a map. Dinner was just as wonderful. The fish was caught fresh that morning. We arrived in Portugal on 3 August 2018 for the first time. We had never used the "with locals" app until we arrived. We wanted something different to all the generic tours hosted by the same Viator tour companies. We came across this tour from Porto hosted by Gustavo & all I can say is good things. Coming from Australia into a different country, Gustavo made us feel welcomed and he was very friendly. This was a very personalised tour. Gustavo showed us how the locals of Averia live, including taking us to a local favourit lunch spot that hosted fresh authentic Portugese dishes such as goat stew in red wine and piri spiced chicken. Gustavo was informative, made sure we had enough water and breaks during the day (it was 43 degrees at some stages) and ensured that he history and culture behind our stops was explained in fine detail. My wife and I had a fantastic day with Gustavo touring the Duoro Valley from Porto. He picked us up on time from our hotel in a late model Mercedes which was immaculately clean and extremely comfortable. His knowledge of the area and of Portuguese history and culture made our conversation as easy as talking to a friend, which now Gustavo is. We mentioned our interest in tasting dry wines and we visited two wineries with tasty offerings of both dry and sweet. He also stopped off at several view points to showcase the valley. We took great interest in watching a river cruise ship pass through a very large lock, a rise of perhaps 10 meters or more. We stopped at a lovely family owned restaurant for lunch and it was so good! We had the goatling with rice for two people and it fed us all. Gustavo’s wine recommendation was perfect! Gustavo is very knowledgeable and we learned a lot on this trip. The scenery was breathtaking, and Gustavo showed us local places where the tour buses don't stop. We cannot say enough good things about our trip through the Douro Valley with Gustavo. The drive is a long one, and from the moment we got in the car, he was asking our preferences to customize our trip to our taste and interests, while also getting to know us and share a little about himself. We felt like we were on a trip with an old friend, laughing the entire time and learning so much! The wine and views were absolutely breathtaking. Our lunch was at a beautiful restaurant and the wine and food recommendations were some of our favorite of our entire trip - who knew oranges, sea salt, olive oil and rosemary were a delicious palate cleanser. Gustavo was so kind and hospitable, taking care to ensure we were welcomed to his beautiful country with exceptional warmth and friendliness. He drove us to the Douro Valley where he shared with us the history of this incredibly beautiful wine valley. He took us to two wineries and lunch, gave us recommendations for delicious foods and wines and other things to do and see during our stay. We were 2 couples who joined Gustavo for the most spectacular trip through the Douro valley. Gustavo shared scenic landscapes through backroads and provided exclusive access to rural chic wineries. We stopped at a couple of vineyards where we sampled some incredible port wines in front of a breathtaking view of the Douro valley - where we would have gladly stayed the rest of the day. On top of all that Gustavo took us for lunch at restaurant for some incredible local cuisine. We would highly recommend this tour. Not everyone in our family was excited about an all day driving tour but were they glad the went! Gustavo is so knowledgeable and a pleasure to be with. We learned so much about Porto and Douro valley. Had the best meal of our entire trip with Gustavo and discovered new wines and local flavors. Not only would I recommend this tour but we cannot wait to return to Porto to have Gustavo show us more. Do not miss this tour!

Gustavo was simply a pleasure from beginning to end, he is amazingly knowledgeable about Portugal history and managed to make the tour super interesting giving a lot of insight about Porto, he didn’t rush at all and took us to places that only locals go. Hands down the best guide we had.The Best

We had a really great day out from Porto up the Douro valley with Gustavo and can highly recommend him and the trip. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the region and took us to some very interesting locations away from the normal busy tourist places. We had a great lunch at a very nice quiet local restaurant and enjoyed all aspects of the day. Gustavo’s car was a high quality large Mercedes and very comfortable and it was so much nicer to see the Douro Valley this way than with a large group …. so well worth the money !Great Douro trip with Gustavo

We had a truly memorable day exploring the Douro Valley with Gustavo. He was very knowledgeable. Knew all the ins and outs to see the best of the Valley while avoiding the crowds. He was such a friendly and interesting person. It was an epic day we won’t ever forget. Extraordinary guide
