Maria gave us an insight into the eating customs and culture of Porto, with a wonderful personal touch. We visited places that we would never have found for ourselves. We (6 of us) had a wonderful food tour with Maria. We walked all over Porto sampling different foods, learning interesting tidbits about the local traditions and history, and just having a good time. Maria was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful (providing good directions on taking the Metro from the cruise port to the meeting point). Our family group of three adults did the 10 Tastes of Porto with Maria Joao on the first morning of our visit to Porto in May 2023. She was very friendly and easygoing, and we spent an extremely enjoyable three hours with her, learning so much about the culinary history and current day food habits of inhabitants of Porto. Maria Joao grew up in the centre of Porto visiting markets, cafes and grocery stores etc. with her parents and grandmother, so in effect the area we covered on the tour was her "playground". Maria Joao has serious food credentials as well, being a private chef and a sommelier/wine critic. She took us on a fabulous 3 hr walking tour which included her favourite cafe for Portuguese tarts (which was not on the usual tourist trail), a comprehensive tasting tour of the amazing Bolhoa Markets, where she knew all of the stall holders, and to one of the surviving traditional grocery stores where we tasted a range of delicacies. Sadly these beautiful grocery stores with their walls full of beautiful timber shelves, counters and glass fronted drawers containing all manner of food supplies, both loose and packaged, are few and far between these days, having been replaced by modern supermarkets. As we walked between these various venues, Maria Joao spoke about the history of the area and pointed out significant buildings as well. All too soon our three hours were up, and we felt ready to explore Porto over the next few days armed with the knowledge that Mari Joao had imparted regarding places to eat, and visit. We cannot recommend this tour with Maria Joao highly enough.Amazing tour!

We had an amazing experience with Maria learning about the local foods and beverages. We even received a Porto for newbies language lesson and learned about local customs. We were able to customize the tour to combine the local introduction with the food tour and it did not disappoint. Maria is a locals local...she is known and clearly liked and respected by everyone that we came across. She and all of the vendors/shop owners really rolled out the red carpets for us. We were treated to amazing local delicacies and exceptional service. I'd tell you all of the tasty treats we tried, but I wouldn't want to ruin your experience! We started our tour at a local cafe (bakery) and then onto a fabulous outdoor food court, followed by trips to a local pub and wine tasting shop. Maria was a fantastic host, she took our group to some great places to eat and some really nice dishes/ snacks which you wouldn’t find without a guide. Maria has an amazing knowledge of wine and was great at introducing some new wines at the cheese and wine tasting. We had a good time with Maria João in Porto. She gave us a lot of interesting reflections on life in Porto and some good food highlights - including an introduction to an excellent fish restaurant near the ocean. Having booked two experiences in one we were slightly disappointed to finish after around 3.5 hours and unsure if we really got value for the combined highlights and food tour. We would definitely book a tour again with Maria João but would not do a combined pair of tours as it’s not clear where either starts or finishes. Personable tour but too short maybe?

We loved every minute of our tasting tour with Maria! Having been born and raised in Porto she has a wealth of information to share. She wove the history of the city and food beautifully into to tour. We loved every stop along the way and the highlight was the open air food market that she has been shopping at since a young girl. Not only was each tasting worthwhile, it was a pleasure to see Maria’s interaction with the vendors she’s know for many years. We have plans today to go back and purchase from those same vendors to take some tastes home to family. We plan to do these tours in every new city whether it’s a walking tour or tasting tour. Maria is a Porto native with deep connections to the food, culture, and local people. We had such an enjoyable Hidden Gems tour with Maria. She was punctual and communicated with us from the moment the tour was booked.
