From the moment we met HJ, we knew we were in for an adventure! He led us on a path to one of the Hawker Center’s detailing the history and culture of the area. At our first stop, he opened up his backpack to pull out water bottles and tissues before hurrying off to get our first tastes. He came back with plates of food to sample. Before we took a bite, he took a group pic (at the end of the day, he sent us all the photos he took with the dishes labeled). Next we went upstairs where he showed us around the “wellness” stalls and then the local garment stalls. Our next stop was the lower level for the fresh food stalls. He pointed out the various fresh fish, the buckets of live eels and giant prawns! We stopped at a fruit stand where he described the Asian fruits. When we told him we had never tried a mangosteen, he purchased a few and showed us how to get to the edible fruit center. We were skeptical but his enthusiasm encouraged us to try it. HJ was correct - we all loved it! As we walked to another market, he pointed out the public art and the historical buildings. The next food stop included MANY more dishes to sample and then dessert! After we couldn’t eat any more, HJ led us through the streets pointing out even more local history and art. We ended up on the rooftop of an apartment complex with views of Singapore and Malaysia & Indonesia in the distance. We thought our tour would simply be a sampling of tastes from the Hawker Center, but it was so much more!! HJ was very good at introducing us to lots of Hawker Stalls and food shops in various parts of Chinatown. He also showed us murals and signage that helped explain the history of the Hawker stalls as well as the experience of the Chinese people coming to Singapore and how they lived. Lots of food! William did an excellent job of giving my parents, my boyfriend and myself a great overview of Chinatown’s hawker Centers with interesting insights and wit while at the same time accommodating for my parents in speaking slowly and super clear. My husband and I were in Singapore for a few days and wanted to experience the Hawker food markets. Ang was immediately engaging, checked ahead of time if any food dislikes. When I met him to start the tour, he was interested to get to know you as a person, interact and talk. He took me to two hawker centers and immediately set about getting an array of dishes from many stalls. He came well prepared with tissues, utensils etc for me to use. Got through many dishes (although many were sweets or desserts). At the end of the tour, he presented me with various gifts including a book of the hawker foods and he took time to go through and tag each dish we tried, which was thoughtful. Was travelling solo so was fine to keep up the pace of trying food and getting around the hawker markets but if I was with my family, may have struggled with the pace. Since i was on my own, the price was probably felt less value for money than if sharing the tour with bigger group. But was still a good way to spend few hours in Singapore and opening eyes to food i may not have tried myself.Hawker stall tour

We arrived in Singapore during the Monsoon Surge which meant for 2 days we'd experienced very little of Singapore and Singapore life, so to actually get out and see and learn something of the real Singapore with someone who knew where to go, what to do and what to eat was a pleasure. We were very excited to learn about Hawker food and try things we wouldn’t normally order. 3 of us recently moved to SG and we had one visitor. Marcus was friendly and gave us a lot of SG history but we wanted to focus on food. I did like that we started at a more local hawker however 3 of the 5 tastings were dumplings. Next we had fruit as a tasting and finally we had satay at Lau Pa Sat. Our tour abruptly ended 30 minutes early after the satay was dropped off. We had questions to ask and we had hoped to at least walk through the hawker. We didn’t talk about any local dishes. For the price of the tour it was not worth it at all. My visitor and I ended up reading a few blogs and went back and just tried food on our own. I originally booked with a different guide and it was changed last minute. There was a lack of communication between the guides and I should have been clear about what we wanted to focus on. Disappointing for a food tour

Our tour of the hawker markets with Ang was great fun! Ang is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about both the history and culture of Singapore and it's very varied food. He left us with an illustrated guide while he beetled off into the market, which was very helpful when trying to figure out what we were eating. His food choices were generally good, though we did prefer the selection at the first hawker market. The tour perhaps could have been better paced, as we were VERY full after the first market - worth noting that a bite or two of each dish is enough if you want to get through it all (even if it seems a crime to waste all that food). Ang was very solicitous, making sure we had time to use the bathroom and wash our hands during our visits. He left us with some thoughtful gifts and fun memories - thank you Ang!Food, history and fun!

Chingmeng was not very pleasant and was very difficult to understand. He knew we were hard of hearing but he continued to talk as he walked away. We could not find the meeting spot and so we were late. I tried to explain that I thught the description of the spot was incorrect and he responded by saying the description for the meeting spot has worked for 10 years and it was fine for everyone else, so why did we have trouble? He brought up US politics and we had no interest in discussing politics. He acted tired and bored. I would not recommend this guide.Not very excited to be doing his job

What a great day we had with HJ! He treated us to numerous, yummy treats of Chinese cuisine. We were able to get familiar with several different hawker food centers and local eateries. The food was great, the portions generous, and we enjoyed tasting new dishes we probably would not have ordered on our own. We were also lucky enough to visit with the oldest Loin Dance group in Singapore, tour the Chinese Opera museum, and get a magnificent city view from a nearby roof top building. We had a delish 2 hours eating with Ang! It was a crazy hot day and the first thing he did was present us with "personalized" fans. Then he took us to two Hawker Centres, sat us down with drinks and cutlery (at a cooler table) and then charged off, returning with a parade great food. Tons of variety. Then he took us around to the stalls that sold it, pointing out Michlen mentions. We shared over 15 dishes ( lots if food!) and learned all about Hawker culture. We are totally comfortable in Hawker Centres now! At the end if 2.5 hours he presented us with gifts- such a nice surprise. Then walked us to the best MRT station for us. We had a great few hours with HJ. We were late meeting him, no fault of his, due to being dropped off at the wrong place by our tact driver. HJ was patient and when we met up greeted us with a big smile. We started off in Chinatown and he explained the history of the place and pointed out things we found very interesting. On then to a Hawker Market where he presented us with many dishes, some we liked more than others but the idea is to at least try everything, which we did. We had time to visit a Buddhist temple and ended up at a Museum exhibition showing how Singapore has and continues to evolve. Throughout our time with HJ he was very patient and attentive to us ensuring we were ok. Finally, he sent us photos he had taken during our tour, a very nice touch. Although Jack had some very good local knowledge and we were able to prize the information out of him, it was very hard work. He was quite clear that we had chosen the wrong time to do the tour, which made us wonder why he accepted the commission in the first place. Overall, we were able to gain insight into the Hawker centres and some of the local dynamics, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time. Jack let us eat a full lunch for the first of five courses, which meant every single next course was a struggle to eat and was very uncomfortable. Finally, his English was questionable, and I found it very hard to understand what he said, so consequently missed a loss of the information. Not worth the money.Could do better…

Prior to going to a hawker centre on our own we wanted to go with a local. Kenny didn’t disappoint. It was easy to meet up with him, personable, and adapted to our needs (e.g., curious to try everything but I at eat small portions as I’m conscious of my sensitive stomach). Our conversation was more understanding today’s culture and infrastructure vs. feeling like a history lesson. He also walked us through a grocery store - which we love doing in other countries.
