If you would like an enjoyable and knowledgeable guide through Pompeii, I highly recommend Roberto. He is a weath of knowledge about the entire area and the site! Weeks before our arrival he guided us on our journey from Rome to Pompeii with the purchase of our train tickets, once we were in Pompeii, he met us at the train station and showed us local places of interest and places to grab a bite along the way. Once we arrived at the site he filled us in on the history and was full of information from ancient times, until modern day and the continuation of the excavation. We had a great day in Pompeii. Travel from Rome was easy using both the train from Roma Termini to Naples Central and then a private driver arranged by Roberto. Pompeii was incredible, and the three hour tour was the right length. Our guide was both knowledgeable and personable. Although not inexpensive, it is a once in a lifetime, adventure. Exploring Pompeii with Roberto was an amazing privilege. He is an archeologist who is working in Pompeii and has a passion for ancient Greek and Roman history and culture. His knowledge and insights were just incredible; we walked around the museum and main sights of the city, and had his stories and expert commentary to accompany us along the way. This is an experience that cannot be replicated by the big tour companies; he was just a joy to spend time with and we could have spent a lot more time just chatting with him about the things he knows and his work. Our tour with Roberto was beyond any expectation we could’ve had for Pompeii. His knowledge, professionalism, passion and expertise in and around Pompeii was astounding. The fact that he held the attention of our 16 and 15 year-old sons the whole time was fantastic! The kids were captivated, interested, and even were asking questions throughout the tour. Pompeii itself is a phenomenal experience, but having a PhD in archeology give a tour; explaining things in ways than you can imagine how life was like in Pompeii almost 2000 years ago was extremely rewarding. We would recommend Roberto to any one. On a side note - our family was vacationing in Rome. We took a day trip to Pompeii for the tour. Roberto organized a driver to take us to the Amalfi coast for a couple of hours for lunch and then back to the train station to head back to Rome. This tour was the highlight of our Italy trip. Roberto made planning this day trip from Rome effortless for us. He arranged transportation, and customized our trip to both Pompeii and Herculaneum. His knowledge and insight of the sites was impressive, and we were able to learn a great deal about the history of these areas from him. Because we had limited time, we really appreciated being able to go right to areas of significance, and were left awestruck with all of the things we saw. Visiting the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum was the absolute highlight of our trip to Italy! Knowing that we may never get a chance to see these magical sites again we wanted to get the most of out of our visit and Roberto certainly delivered. Seeing Pompeii and Herculaneum through the eyes of trained archeolgist is about as good as it gets. The tour was well planned, informative, and fun and there wasn't a question Roberto couldn't answer. I really appreciated how well he explained the layout of the city before we began walking its streets because it helped us image ourselves a citizen of Pompeii on the way to the forum, the theater, or to the gates out of city. Roberto guided us back in time with descriptions of the daily life in Pompeii while viewing the theater, business, homes and public places. His knowledge of both Roman and Greek history and their Gods helped us understand the ancient culture. He also explained the process of the volcanic destruction of the city in detail and how the the site was discovered and archeology history to the present day through his first hand experience studies s an archeologist. I have yearned to see Pompeii for much of my life. I am so pleased that my niece insisted a see it with a private guide. With Roberto's direction, we put together a trip from Rome to Vesuvius to Pompeii and back to Rome in a day! The plan worked without a hitch. We took the fast train from Rome. Roberto hired the car and driver which took us to Vesuvius. Roberto then met us for a 3 hour tour of Pompeii. He tailored the tour to the audience which made it much more interesting for our party. If I’m totally honest, I was a little disappointed with this tour. For some reason, I thought having an archaeologist as a tour guide for the ancient city of Pompeii was going to bring a special edge, but sadly, this was not to be. We trudged the same old worn path the every other tourist was walking, and perhaps Roberto was having an off day, but this tour was a bit lack-luster. The scorching heat didn’t really help either, nor did the last minute adjustment to our plan. I don’t want to be unnecessarily negative, as i’m Sure Roberto is a cool guy, we just didn’t hit the high notes. Not my best

Roberto was wonderful! As soon as we expressed interest in having a tour of Pompei with him, he was able to curate a tour that met our needs and our interests. Unfortunately on the day of the meeting, I was too sick to attend, but my husband and our daughter went for the tour. Roberto was understanding and adapted easily to the change. He took my husband for a walk through the Pompei grounds and told stories and provided explanations for the ruins. Roberto’s English was excellent. My husband was able to ask questions throughout the tour and Roberto was knowledgeable in his answers. 7 of us ( 4 adults and 3 young kids ) had our tour with Benedetto around Pompei . We were all thrilled with the afternoon . Benedetto was a fountain of knowledge and neatly took us round the site . He was skilled at dodging crowds of tourists and timing our 3 hours to be packed with facts whilst answering our many questions . This really brought this amazing place to life for us all ! He was also attentive towards our 3 kids including noticing that my 7 year old needed a sandwich stop ! We paid for 4 adults ( EU kids are free to the site ) I was initially worried that this wouldn’t be worth the money but I would now thoroughly recommend this personal tour . Originally scheduled a personal tour of Pomoeii and Herculaneum on a Sunday. Flight was canceled. Roberto my guide was able to reschedule to Wednesday with Benedetto. Had a great tour of Pompeii. (second time there si he showed me things missed the first time.) When it was time to go to Herculaneum (had also been there before) he agreed to take me instead to a much lesser known site, the Villa Poppaea. Wonderful surprise. The tour was fantastic! Roberto couldn't make it for our tour but he organized a fellow tour guide instead of canceling us and she was amazing. Roberto organized our car pick up and drop off and we only had the time to experience pompei for 2 hours and we wanted to see as much as possible in that time. Our tour guide was amazing she took us to all the places we wanted to see explained everything in great detail. It was a great experience and I definitely reccomend Roberto! Roberto was unable to take us on our tour of Pompeii but arranged for his colleague Rapheal to meet us. I have to say this was the best tour of our trip from Rapheal meeting us at the train station and then driving us to the site in his own car and then tour itself what can I say but amazing. Rapheal had so much passion about Pompeii and took us to parts the main bulk of tourists don't see. Roberto and his colleague, Benedetto, arranged a wonderful day in Pompeii for our family. Benedetto was very personable, and did well with the challenge of our sons--aged 11 & 14--being tired and a little wrung out on ruins and museums. He gave us great information about the infrastructure of the city, organization of Pompeiian society, and helpful tips for us to have a successful return trip to Naples so that we didn't miss our train back to Rome. Just FYI, these archaeologist guides are in high demand, so we actually toured with a colleague of Roberto's, Benedetto--and he was fantastic. Arriving with kids from Rome, it was a comfort to know he'd be waiting for us on the platform with our name on a sign, as indeed he was, and helped us purchase the proper tickets for the local train we rode together to Pompeii. Roberto couldn't come but another archaeologist, Francesco, filled in. He was a few minutes early--like my friend and I were. He helped navigate us through the Napoli Centrale train station to the local that wisked us off to Pompeii. He was pleasant, friendly, helpful, and funny--and incredibly knowledgeable. We talked all the way to Pompeii about what we'd see, small talk to get to know each other, and gave some tips about how to handle the immense information and historic treasures that would overwhelm us there. You could spend a week looking at everything there and learning about time periods, building materials, it's founding--on and on. But when the trip came to an end Francisco offered some ideas to see if we wanted to hang out a little more, or to consider another time. We'll be back, and other sites he suggested in the region. Roberto ended up having a sore throat and sent Francesco to be our host. He did a fantastic job and was attentive to our needs and questions. We appreciated his sense of humor and his passion for describing the glorious village of Pompeii. He also provided a great suggestion for lunch after the tour ended, which worked well into our schedule. The train ride back to Naples created more adventure as it stopped short of the terminal by several stops and we got to walk through the local neighborhoods until locating a cab to take us the several miles to Napoli Centrale! Unfortunately, Roberto couldn't make it at the last minute but he sent Benedetto to give us our tour of Pompeii. Benedetto was friendly, funny and brought Pompeii to life! He showed us the little things of Pompeii that we would have missed otherwise like how to know which way traffic flowed on ancient one-way streets. He himself had a doctorate in archaeology and was able to answer our questions on history but also on how certain building were constructed, the different materials used, and how to spot differences in social classes by home location or style.
