What you can expect
This is a new alternative activity that can be a hobby or a part of your experience in Chiang Mai - Creative Craft Tourism.
This workshop is for beginners - no previous experience of working with leather needed! You will learn the processes of handmade leather work: making a pattern, cutting the leather, punching holes, stitching to create 2 simple designs: a coin purse and a key ring.
I will prepare the leather, tools and accessories for you to work with, you just have to bring your curiosity and enthusiasm and take your own leather work back home !

Remarks : If children are to be included in a workshop group then they should be 12 years old and above.

We had a lovely time at Suranat’s quiet, peaceful studio, learning about the basics of leatherwork as we made a simple wallet. He was a patient and encouraging teacher, giving the rationale behind the techniques he was teaching. We had a great time.Great introduction to leatherwork

Nous avons passé un merveilleux moment a l atelier avec Suranat. La proposition de création était très intéressante et Suranat nous a guidé pour réaliser un bel objet en cuir.

I had a wonderful and inspiring afternoon. Not only is Suranat very passionate about leather and about working and creating with it. He is also a patient teacher and explains everything step by step. He also comes with an interesting background. Thank you for sharing! I can totally recommend this experience for people who enjoy artisanal work and who would like a peaceful time in a quiet surrounding. My time with Suranat was wonderful. Everything was neatly prepared, each step of the process was explained in detail and you could always have a trial before going to your leather piece. After many years offering this workshop, Suranat is still very patient with newbies and so passionate about his work. It was wonderful learning this amazing trait from him. I hada splendid time and achieved a gorgeous little bag. The location of the studioos easy to find and located in a beatiful area with a stunning forest Wat / temple around the corner. We arrived for the morning session given a very warm friendly welcome. We were told by the end of the session we’d have made a wallet everything you need is provided and the tools all explained in detail what they were for and how to use them if you like craft this will be ideal for you if craft isn’t quite you’re thing you’ll still have a great time and come away having made a wallet which you would never have thought possible a fantastic experience and would definitely recommend this trip something totally different to sightseeing Leather or not

Suranat was one of the coolest people I’ve met in Thailand (and the bar was set really high). The class was unique and super helpful for learning the basics of leather working- which I look forward to using in my craft at home. His studio was clean and well lit, he created an accepting environment and was amazingly easy to talk to. Highly recommend it!!! Unique and Awesome!

Suranat is one of a kind. He truly has captured the spirit of handmade products with his sincerity and passion. His studio is as warm and inviting as is he is. The workshop will not only teach you about the art of leather making but it will allow you to stop being 'just a tourist' and connect with a local artist. We will visit again soon Suranat!

Suranat's workshop was truly one of the most memorable moments of my husband and I's trip to Chiang Mai. Suranat is truly a down to earth person whose hopsitality and passion for handmade leather products is hard to find. The experience left us with a greater appreciation for handmade goods, and perhaps even more important, a memorable time with Suranat! My husband and I spent the morning with Suranat in his Basic Leather workshop. He is an excellent teacher and a wonderful host. We had a great time making our leather purses and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Suranat while he taught us how to plan, cut and sew our creations. Plus our included lunch was delicious, and as a bonus, Suranat also took pictures and videos while we worked. I went for a half day leather workshop to the studio of Khun Suranat and I had a great afternoon. I made a small purse and from the moment I went back home, I carry it for my small coins.
One more time, I like to thank Suranat for the great afternoon and if you are in Chiang Mai and like to some different activity, after all the temples you visit, this is a great choice. And a lovely teacher who is so patient and the lunch he offered was great too.Great experience and a very good teacher.

Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the workshop with Suranat. He was very patient and clear in giving instructions. Even my seven year old son was able to follow step by step. I highly recommend this host for a unique and memorable experience. My husband actually wishes he had more time there! Use google maps to find his studio. Basic Leather Workshop

Participating in the Leather Workshop with Suranath was a new and welcomed experience. I have never done leather works before and although many things were new to me, thanks to Suranath s competent guidance I was able to catch up and carefully built some first skills in ease and comfort. I am recommending the workshop to everybody who has the chance being in Chiang Mai and wants to DO something new. I had such a great time in a very nice and pleasant place. The atmosphere for this workshop is amazing. Suranat is so lovely, he is so kind, calm and has so much sense of humor which make me feel very comfortable for first joining this workshop. I was so excited and worried at the beginning because I have no experience for making any handicraft before. Everything was well prepared, all equipment were set on the table and ready to be used and so many patterns were provided to. Suranat taught me step by step and that made me more confident in every procedure. I had so much fun during the workshop and found that this is one of the rich experience I have ever had!! I decided that I wanted to try something new, so I sign up for this class. It was a great time. I learnt a lot about leather. Suranat is a patient teacher, which was good thing since this was my first time doing anything like this. He taught me step by step and that made me feel more confident in which step. Suranat has a great sense of humor and is a great taker, which made the class more enjoyable. Clothing designer and skilled tailor, Suranat Buranapong, sought for a new medium when he grew tired of the competitive fashion industry. He especially relished creating evening dresses directly on a mannequin and was able to apply this skill to leatherwork when he excelled in a workshop. After making his second handbag he felt that he found his calling, and started to take orders from friends. Having developed his collection for less than a year, he already has a distinctive style that he's accented with a signature striped-pattern lining in all his bags, as well as his cloth label, typically reserved for garments. He finds working alone meditative and stitches every bag by hand. Sourcing the finest quality leathers, he appreciates the way the color and texture of leather evolves, especially with vegetable-tanned leather.
