My morning with Claudia was pretty surprising. I've been in Budapest many times, that's why I decided to pick up a thematic tour that sounded different from the other I took in the past and it certainly was unique! With Claudia I observed many details I wasn't aware of and learnt so much about Hungarian history through movies. We were in Budapest for a week. We had already taken a couple of tours, and we loved the idea of taking a tour that showcased the many movies that were filmed in Budapest. What we got though was that, plus so much more. Claudia heard about my family history and she did a great job personalizing the tour to places that were probably not on her list, but was so happy to add additional stops along the way. Through her work as a journalist, she knew about some German documents that were recently found from WW ll in the floor of a building that was, as recently as November, 2015, being renovated. Knowing about my family history, and because of her work as a journalist, she was kind enough to put me in touch with the person who was in charge of cataloging those documents. That person and I are currently talking about trying to find if my family members on this documentation. Claudia met us at the designated site right on time. We had a wonderful tour with her. You have to have an interest in architecture to enjoy this tour. Thankfully, our group of four loves architecture. Claudia started us off at the Baths. Fascinating old building with great exterior and interior. From there we wandered all over the "Buda" side of the river and saw all kinds of old buildings constructed in the Art Nouveau style. She knew the history and significance of every structure. She is a delightful transplant from Italy who has been in Budapest for 12 years. We also spent quite a bit of time on the "Pesch" side of the city and thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Whenever I travel, pride myself in taking a deep dive, and my preparation for visiting a city like Florence, Vienna, or Budapest, starts several weeks before. Prior to my current trip, I read a great deal about Budapest's art and architecture. I mention this because I thoroughly enjoyed the yesterday's tour regarding Art Nouveau and Secession Architecture. We took a 3-hour walking tour with Claudia as our guide. Claudia was friendly, engaging and shared her wealth of information about Budapest’s culture and history. We covered a lot of ground from the Heroes’ Square through the parks and Jewish quarter, past the opera house, important and beautiful buildings, then across to the castle and fisherman’s bastion.
