If you have some days in the Kuala Lumpur area, you should go to Malakka. A wonderful city with a colonial city center, a lot of temples and - of course - an amazing china town. Try the riceballs! You should not go by bus. Take it easy and go by car. Paul is a secure driver and he will bring you safe to your destination. Without a guide like Paul you will not understand the history of Malakka and the story behind the buildings. Paul is a fantastic storyteller, from whom I learned not only a lot about the history of the city, I also get deeper into the malaysian way of life.

We really enjoyed our tour of Malacca with Hoopy. She was knowledgeable and flexible. We told her we were interested in history, and she took us to see some great historical sights. In addition, we had a delicious lunch of Peranakan food. I mention her flexibility because my wife lost her glasses (they fell off her chain), and we spent a bit of time looking for them (luckily, we found them). But it didn't feel like we missed any of the tour. We also went shopping for batiks. We had a great time and would highly recommend Hoopy!Great trip to Malacca!

Hoopy thought she might be late to pick us up (due to unexpected weekend diversions) and kept us informed. She weaved her magic and was only 5 mins late. A pleasant drive from KL to Melaka with discussion on various matters. Hoopy took us on a marvellous walking tour of Melaka, with so much to see and absorb. Hoopy was very helpful in providing commentary, suggesting good photo spots, and ensuring the tour was at your pace. We stopped for a great lunch, and then more walking and a river cruise. The drive back to KL took 3.5 hours. We weren't the only ones enjoying Melaka. Thank you Hoopy, we hope to meet again.Melaka meanderings with Hoopy

We enjoyed discovering Melaka with Paul, specially the babanyonya history as that was totally new to us. We visited the town at a leisurely pace and Paul took us to a lovely nyonya restaurant where we treated him to lunch before going to the Heritage centre which was fascinating. He timed the visit well and we got back to KL without being stuck in the infamous trafic jams. Interesting and well-organised day

Hoopy guided us 2 days. Day 1: Batu Caves, batik shop & Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan (The Federal Territory Mosque) Day 2: Malacca Hoopy is a very (but not to much) enthousiastic guide. She was super punctual (always on time), very flexible in her program (adding things to see) and she told us a lot about the history, background and culture of places we visited. We had a wonderful adventure with Hoopy. She was on time picking us up in Kuala Lumpur, shared lots of information about Malaysia generally and Malacca specifically, and did a great job showing us around the city. She also took some wonderful pictures of us along the way! We loved her Malay language lessons too. Terima kasih, Hoopy!Informative and fun Malacca day with Hoopy

Paul was very capable at crafting an experience in Melaka for our particular situation - traveling with an elderly parent who uses a walker / wheelchair and has limited ability to walk. We were able to experience the unique history of Melaka without exceeding Mom’s ability. He is multilingual and able to share information in Mandarin for Mom and English for son-in-law. We asked him to find a unique Nyonya restaurant for lunch and he was able to do this for us as well. A good and careful driver he was prompt, courteous and kind. When Mom was tired Paul was able to flex his plans to finish off the day and get us back to our hotel in good shape. You won’t regret hiring Paul to show you around. A very resourceful guide

I hired TK for two day trips out of KL: Malacca on day 1 and the Cameron Highlands on day 2. This review is for the day 2 trip to the Cameron Highlands. I want to be up front: TK warned me that traveling to the Cameron Highlands from KL would be a long trip. To make it worse, the weather had been rainy (increasing the possibility of landslides) AND the day I chose for the trip was a holiday weekend. He warned me I should expect a minimum six hour round trip drive. He recommended that I plan a multi-day trip, but unfortunately my schedule did not allow it. I was stubborn and said, "it's okay - let's do it!" TK has a great personality. He is friendly, and as soon as I got into the car he made me feel at ease. He constantly checked in on me, making sure I was comfortable. Because of the threats of landslides, TK brought along an extra person in case the car got stuck and needed to be pushed free. I felt the three of our personalities meshed very well and there was never an awkward or unwelcome lull in the conversation. We continued our conversations from the day before, and I learned more about Malaysia's history and culture. That is good, because it was a LONG trip! The first leg of journey was around three hours. We stopped at a couple highway rest stops along the way to stretch our legs, use the restrooms, and pick up snacks (such as ondeh-ondeh - so good!). Our first Cameron Highlands stop was for breakfast (roti canai and sambal). After breakfast we had a short drive to the Time Tunnel museum, an eclectic collection of historical Malaysian pop culture, national history, and the history of the Cameron Highlands region all bundled up with a pick-your-own-strawberry farm. From there we began the crawl towards the Boh Tea Plantation, an 8 km drive which took us over 2 hours to complete due to the insanely heavy traffic! We originally planned to stop for a hotpot lunch, but instead pushed on to the plantation where we had a delicious meal of pastries, some savory and some sweet. The views from and through the plantation were wonderful! After lunch we visited a local fruit and vegetable market where I got to taste local corn, Malaysian fried chicken, and some other fruits that I'm still not 100% sure what their English names are... By this time it was past 3:00pm, so we decided to head back to KL. Fortunately the traffic wasn't as bad and we made it back to the city in around 3 1/2 hours. This was a fun trip and I'm glad I went, but I think it was the company that really made it so enjoyable! If I was to ever go back I think I would take TK's initial advice and not do it as a day trip. The drive is so long that there isn't much time to explore. At least one full day in addition to the day of arrival and day of departure would make a lot more sense.Nice day trip to the Cameron Highlands

If you want a nice relaxed tour of historic KL, this is your tour. We visited some neat places and the flea markets and temples were very fun to see. I did find myself standing around a bit wishing we could move on to the next area. However, I move through things extremely fast. An hour at a museum is too much in my mind. My mother would have wished she didn’t have to walk so far. Everyone is different. It was worth the price and time.Relaxed paced tour of old KL.

I had a spare day to fill in Kuala Lumpur and a trip to Malacca fitted the bill. I am very dubious about organised trips and much prefer to try to explore hidden parts of a city, preferably on foot, and learn more about the culture of the country and its people. Manjeet delivered this brief and more. Importantly I chose a woman because I felt I was likely to be safe but I also chose Manjeet from her profile. I was pleased she was free that day. It was an excellent trip and I learned a lot during the drive as well as in Malacca itself. Laksa and cincau in a hidden suburb were delicious. Manjeet was a great host who I would definitely recommend. This was my first booking with WithLocals but it will not be my last. Next time I will know more about the process and that it may be possible to tailor a trip. Ideal Malacca trip

Povan wasn't available even the booking went through and got confirmed. He referred his colleague as the subtitude, who is a very good guide. However, the tour quality does not match the price of US$235 for two. Again, it is at no fault of the tour guide, who was very knowledgeable and pleasant. My recommendation is to improve the quality of the tour to make it worths the price. Thanks.

Siidoz was great! There was a person with a nut allergy in the group and he was able to adapt the tour to cater for this. There were also two children (11 years and 13 years). The tour was centred primarily around Chinatown with a good variety of food, both savoury and sweet. He was knowledgeable and engaging, particularly making sure the children were included. There was so much food so make sure you're hungry! Thanks!Great tour

Manjeet gave us the most fantastic food and cultural tour. From start to finish she was amazing! As part of the group we had one person who is coeliac (gluten free) as well as a 4 year old child. From pre-booking discussions we knew we were in great hands as she was really knowledgeable about being gluten free and even supplied a multi-language allergy alert card to use in Malaysia. The tour was adapted to cater for our dietary requirements (even going to a place where the chef is gluten free!) and the food was incredible - a good mixture of sweet and savoury! Our tour included a ride on the train to Little India, which the 4 year old loved, as well as a trip to a bakery. She included cultural landmarks and adapted the tour so we could see the padang and colonial area. She followed up with a list of all the food tried, as well as more details about places to eat gluten free within Malaysia! We cannot speak highly enough of Manjeet. She was engaging, knowledgeable, thoughtful and knew just where to find amazing food! Make sure you go on this tour hungry as there was so much food!! Thank you so much!Amazing!

We took the local street food tour of Kuala Lumpur and Manjeet was an amazing guide. She took us to many excellent food places and displayed a great knowledge about both the food and the city. Manjeet was also quite friendly. She was extremely diligent in ensuring our dietary restrictions (vegetarian) were adhered to. She also provided many other suggestions for things to do around the city during the rest of our stay, including a map of hand picked places to go in nearby Melaka, which we heavily relied on when our tour guide there was awful. As an final example of how great she is: Before the tour started, we had issues with getting a taxi, and she helped us to make a last minute switch to go by the Monorail instead by sending us very helpful screenshots and instructions of what sort of ticket to buy (it was our first day in the city and this certainly saved time given we were already late), and she even adjusted he order of places we visited to make this work. Finally, she gave us a goody bag of desserts since we'd enjoy them more while not so full! Wonderful guide!

She tailored the tour based on my interests, she is passionate and super knowledgeable (I learned a lot about pf Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur) and walked me through the places I wouldn’t visit on my own (Taoist temple visit was fascinating). We had interesting discussions on a range of topics from literature to weather. It was really an enriching experience. My family and I travel internationally often and almost always we hire locals to show us around. We were excited to do the same in Kuala Lumpur as this was our first time in the city. But we were disappointed with our experience. We were still hungry after the tour. Our guide took us to four different sites and made sure he chose the most inexpensive food items on the menu. Mind you we each paid over $39. We were surprised to know that the whole tasting experience will be done within the Jalan Street or the food street which to us is not really a local eating experience. It is not worth the hype or the money. Didn’t expect

Manjeet is a highly knowledgeable and cultured guide. Before the tour, she took the time to ask about my preferences, and on the day itself—knowing I had just arrived in Kuala Lumpur that morning—she was attentive to my comfort throughout the day. Her thoughtfulness and consideration made the experience very enjoyable. I enjoyed the break we took at a café, where I had Nyonya sweets along with a cup of kopi. It was a delightful and relaxing moment that added a special touch to the day. I highly recommend her to anyone interested in learning about history and culture. She shared a wealth of knowledge, not only about the sites we visited but also about other places and cities in Malaysia. We did the ten tasting out with Manjeet and what a way to start our holiday! Manjeet is incredibly knowledgeable not just about the food but the history and stories behind each dish too. As we made our way through the streets of KL Manjeet explained the history around us. From the very start, she ascertained what we liked and then tailored tastings to suit us, with a few surprises on the way. She even very kindly bought us a few treats to take away and have later.
