This tour was well worth the money. It was a full day for sure. Our guide Luis, was very knowledgeable about Tomar, the Knight Templars, the castles, the Convent of Christ, the aqueduct was amazing, and the history that went along with each. He took us to a very unique but awesome medieval restaurant Taverna Antiqua for lunch. The only negatives I have are that the vehicle was too small for 5, sixty something people. Also WithLocals actually switched guides on us. We didn't get the person we originally requested and didn’t find that out until the day of the tour. I hadn’t noticed because they were both name Luis. We chose this tour because of our interest in Medieval history and the Crusades. It also was a plus that this amazing historical site is off the beaten tourist path. Joao really brought magic to the day with his thoughtful insights and stories that wove together centuries of Portuguese history, culture and politics all the way up to the present day. He also provided a healthy dose of Dan Brown/DaVinci Code myth-busting to the discussion. To top things off we had a great lunch al fresco at the foot of the Roman bridge crossing a gently flowing river running through the picturesque town of Tomar. It was arguably the best day we spent on our two-week vacation in Portugal. Back to the future

We booked an all day tour to visit some of the Templar Knights historical sites with Our guide Luis. He picked us up at our vacation spot and drove us through the country for our tour to Tomar. Luis is an encyclopedia of knowledge! He was apt at showing us all of the interesting locations and very detailed knowledge of the sites you would not get with the larger tours. Our pace was perfect and comfortable for an all day adventure going as fast or slow as we wanted and we also came home with some fantastic photography. My husband and I love to learn on our travels and have taken some fully-guided trips such as with Road Scholar. This time we decided to tailor our own, staying in Lisbon and hiring local guides, and we were fortunate to find Sylvia, who is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable! We took the Knights Templar tour and felt like we were stepping back into history. From the boat ride to access a medieval fortress in the morning fog, to a delicious lunch in a restored centuries- old tavern, she knew how to get us to important sites. We could easily have gone through the Convent of Christ in Tomar on our own without learning many of the details which brought tears to my eyes. Most importantly, she was flexible in meeting the interests we expressed. My husband mentioned that part of his family is Jewish. She knew about , and took us to, a restored museum and synagogue in Tomar. Not only does she know history, but she answered many of our questions about life in Portugal today. She made our day a delight!History with enthusiasm!

We are a family of four visiting Portugal for the first time. Joao took us to Tomar to visit the beautiful Convent of Christ and the Almourol Castle on our last day in Portugal. The church and castle are so beautiful but I believe Joao made a difference in our experience. He is knowledgeable, kind, patience, and very generous with his time. We feel we have had a brief history lesson of Portugal; a glimpse of how the Knights Templar had affected and shaped the history of Portugal. We also learned the way of life of Portugal through Joao. Joao also took us to the historical town of Tomar and had a unique medieval lunch at a local restaurant. We enjoy our leisure lunch and drinks as Portuguese do and chatted and hanged out like friends. Our young adult children also enjoyed this tour tremendously and commented how much they learned on this tour. Joao has gone above and beyond on this tour-way past the 9 hours of the tour. He took us back to Lisbon at the end of the tour, dropped us off at the Time-out market to make sure we could try the Pasteis de Nata of Manteigaria as we wish and showed us where to buy the wines we want to bring home. Then also suggested where we should have our last seafood dinner in Lisbon. We have had a wonderful day with Joao and will not hesitate to recommend Joao. The best day!!!! We highly recommend Sonia who gave us an excellent tour of Lisbon’s historical centre, including a couple of places and short cuts we would never have known about or found if we hadn’t been with Sonia. She is such a lovely person, very friendly and gave us such a lot of information about Lisbon in general during the tour. It’s well worth the money and a much nicer way to take a tour rather than walking around in a large group. We’d definitely take another tour with Sonia if we come back to Lisbon. Joao or John arrived on time, which for me often is a priority. Along the way he described what we were seeing. It was about a 1 hour drive to Fatima Once there he made sure we were well informed and unrushed even though the weather sucked. Next we went to Nazare, and it was beautiful. We had a great seafood lunch and on to Obidos. Another coastal town. Overall a great tour, a welcoming guide. Thats all you can ask for. Funny,informative, and nicely laid back

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful day trip to Sintra with Luis! Although we endured some rain during the first half of the day, Luis made the best of it and enabled us to enjoy all of Sintra and the surrounding area. Luis' deep knowledge of Portuguese history is amazing, which brought the diverse background of Sintra to life for us. Sofia knows and loves Sintra! She met us at our hotel and we had a wonderful day. We went to her favorite local seafood restaurant and had sea bass caught that morning. Fantastic! A storm one week before we arrived caused major damage to trees and roads, so she had to adjust the itinerary, and took us to other beautiful spots along the coast. We even got to visit a local winery and craft beer brewery. What fun! Thank you, Sofia!!Great intro to Sintra!

We learned so much about Lisbon's history and layout from this tour. It was a great way to orient ourselves upon our arrival, and it was a pleasure meeting Henry who showed us around, and wove together Lisbon's history with a well-paced story. We loved our trip to Evora with Luis. First, Evora is a beautiful walled city with great character. The roman ruin, churches and cathedral were a great draw, but it was walking the streets and seeing the shops we loved the most. It was also wonderful to be outside of Lisbon for a day and see the countryside. Second, Luis was a terrific guide for us. From the car ride first thing in the morning until the return trip in the afternoon he was filled with information. He weaved together questions we had from other tours with new information about our visit to Evora and really helped us form a more complete picture of Evora, Lisbon and Portugal (people, places, culture and history). He is a wealth of knowledge that flows in conversations and stories and kept us engaged all day. Henrique was knowledgeable, warm and a great story teller. You can tell he's a Lisbon native as he knows all the beautiful details of the city and shares them in such a lovely way. We saw so much and stopped at a several scenic spots for pictures (Henrique had no problem stepping up as photographer too). He really wanted to share the heart of his country and connect us with the spirit of the Portuguese people. When the tour ended and we let him know we were heading to lunch he gave us a recommendation and walked us there before saying goodbye. A great tour, one of the best ways to experience Lisbon is through food, then add in Sonia's history knowledge and her experience being a local and you have a great tour. We visited local hangouts whilst wandering the streets. The tour starts with a great view out over the city and that is the highest point of the whole tour, making walking a lot easier than some tours which have significant amounts of stairs. Due to a number parades that were on in Lisbon on the day of the tour part of our group were caught in traffic and were not able to get to the starting point. Sonia gave them directions on where they should be able to get to on foot, which was a bit of challenge, hence the patient legend. I would recommend this tour, and especially Sonia, you definitely need to taste the Pasteis de nata from the place you stop at, they are definitely better than the usual ones in Lisbon.Sonia the patient legend

Our travel guide (Migel) was excellent. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Sintra & Cascais & Quelez was fabulous! Only disappointment was the weather on the day as it was cloudy & raining intemittantly, this meant that we could not go to Pena Palace due to poor visibility. Joao was superb, organizing a walking tour that accommodated our abilities, flexible as the time went along during the day. The following day, when we headed to Fatima, which was the key destination of our weekend tour, his car sustained some damage as we left Lisbon. This was through no fault of his own. He promptly arranged a solution (on a Sunday morning while almost everything was closed in Lisbon) to secure a rental car with no added cost to us. We managed to arrive in time for a meaningful tour at Fatima. His knowledge once there of the shrine and history was deep and profound. We still managed to see Nazare' afterward and though we did not have time for Obidos (the tour as originally offered included all three), we had a more than satisfying experience, especially at Fatima. Whether you are a believer or not, Fatima is integral to Portuguese culture and it is unlikely that anyone who goes on this tour will be unmoved by the site and people there. We are now on a wonderful 11-day cruise. The best part of the trip though will be that day with Joao.Superb, flexible
