We had a fun time exploring Naples with Donatella on the Culinary Kickstart Tour! She introduced us to Neapolitan food: street foods portafoglio and cuoppo; babà a favorite dessert and sfogliatelle a breakfast pastry. Although the tour was to have 6 food stops, after 3 stops we were so full that we spent the rest of the time touring the city center and historic area. She shared with us stories and insights which made our layover between Sorrento and Rome much more interesting and productive. Our tour was booked in July which was 2 months before our trip. The night before we were to do this tour, I get a text from original tour guide saying he can't make it. He was able to secure another tour guide, but I did not know who it was until the morning of the tour (9/16) as I was traveling to Naples. Nothing like a little stress? Our tour guide we ended up with was fantastic. We purposely booked this tour the first day we were in Naples, so that we could learn something about the city and get a lay of the land. I have learned there is no better way to learn about a culture than by getting to know its food. Our tour took us down narrow streets as we learned the history of Naples and its culinary traditions. We tried cuoppo which my family calls the cone of fried food which was surprisingly yummy. We had the freshest buffalo mozzarella and we went back to the store later to get some more. We were taken into the pizzeria where we could watch where our Neopolitan pizza was made and cooked. It was here that we also were able to eat fried pizza. And one of the most enjoyable stops was when we went to a little shop to try ragu and we got to interact with one of the employees. Our tour guide was generous and if there was anything we wanted to try or have scones of, we could. We recently had a tour with Paolo, who was very kind and accommodating. We chose the experience with 6 tasting. He informed us that August 15th is a national holiday in Italy, meaning fewer restaurants would be open. Despite this, we couldn’t change our plans and went ahead with the tour. So instead of going in the market area we stayed in the central region of Naples. The tour itself was interesting, but for the price we paid, the food provided was minimal. We were four adults sharing a portion meant for two. First tasting was a small bowl of bocconcini we had to share, then we stopped at a place where the drinks were 1euro while we were waiting for 2 pasta dishes we shared amongst the 4 of us. Wine was also offered at the same store that did the drinks. The wine was quite disappointing, which was surprising for Italy. It felt like the guide’s goal was to spend as little as possible. We then stopped for sweets and had our own pastry which was recommended by Paolo. I was looking at another pastry but it was 2 euros more, Paolo brought this extra pastry to share amongst the 4 of us. We also enjoyed coffee. Although Paolo offered to order more, it felt a bit awkward as we would expect we would not have to ask. On a positive note, Paolo kindly offered to drive my parents back to the hotel, which we appreciated. Overall, while the experience was pleasant, we felt it was overpriced for the culinary experience we received. Knowing what we know now, we wouldn’t have booked it. I have read from other people’s comments they ate too much food and it was not our case.Street food tour

Our tour took us down narrow streets and into stores we wouldn't have even spotted. Our guide knew the streets, restaurants and people so well and made us feel very special. Our group contained a cheese-hater and a pescatarian and adaptations were made without hesitation. We learned about the city's history as well as her culinary traditions. The food was delicious and a great introduction to food in Naples. I was very pleased we booked this for our first day so we can make the most of the great recommendations. Alessandro is very passionate about his home town! He showed us so many interesting things that are pretty hidden unless you know where to look. We knew Naples was known for food, but Alex went way beyond a basic food tour and was able to weave culture and history into the tour and keep it interesting. We did tours in Rome, the Vatican, Pompei, and Barcelona, and our 18 year old said this tour was the highlight of our trip. If you travel with a 17-19 year old, you know this is high praise. Lolll. We did a tour today in Barcelona and met some new friends. As soon as they said they were going to Naples, I recommended Alex right away! Fabiana gave us an excellent food tour in the city of Naples! She was very knowledgeable and related well to our family. The food we tried covered a wide variety from a fish, market and fresh fruit and vegetable market to cheese, two pizza and pasta and more! My husband and I book a food tour whenever we visit a new city. Our tour in Naples with Frederica, was a small group with just the three of us which was wonderful. Frederica took into consideration that my husband is a vegetarian and provided options for him. We were taken off the beaten path to areas where locals shop and eat. We tasted food that were specific to the area and while walking between food destinations learned some history of Naples. We are a young couple on our early 30s from Spain. We did two amazing tours with Gennaro, one by walking and one by car, the first at the historical centre of Naples (including the Decumani, Pignasecca market and the Quartieri Spagnoli, plus recommendations for other areas) and the second outside of the city, through the Amalfi coast. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Gennaro. He picked us up at our AirBnb, which took the stress out of our morning. He told us all about the history of Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Our drive was relaxing, with beautiful views and commentary. Each stop was planned, so we could enjoy all of the sights, with time for extra exploring if we wanted. The food recommendations were perfect, and we visited the special pastry shop featured on Stanley Tucci’s Searching For Italy. We were lucky enough to have booked Gennaro for a day long guided tour around Naples! We took the train down from Rome and went to the National Archeological Museum of Naples first thing in the morning. Then Gennaro met us outside the museum and began our day in Naples. I know Naples has a reputation but the city is changing dramatically and we had one of the best days of our entire trip! Gennaro had his own car so he was able to take us to many places in and around the city...from the Bay of Naples to the heart of the city. We always felt safe walking around with him (Female). Even the hidden spots that were once much more "Sketchy", were a complete delight to stroll through. Gennaro was so knowledgeable about the city overall, the food, the places he took us to and the culture of the city both past and present. He's also just a lot of fun to hang out and spend time with! Manuela è stata una guida meravigliosa, paziente, attenta e molto coinvolgente. We have had the best tour around the backstreets and bars and eateries of old town Naples and I can seriously say I could not eat another thing after the tour! We had so much great food and our guide was fantastic in telling us all the history about Naples and the food and also answering any questions we had. We are actually staying not far from where we did the tour and we have been back to a number of the places we ‘discovered’ on the tour we enjoyed them so much.Come Hungry!
