What you can expect

Discover the beauty of Kamakura, an ancient city in a day trip! in Kamakura - 0def8095f009802f119ff5be34395f72

Kamakura is one of the oldest cities in Japan, has a warm climate and offers tourist attractions similar to those in Nara and Kyoto. Kamakura is located just near Tokyo so a day-trip is feasible, it is close to Yokohama (e.g. Chinatown), the second biggest city in Japan.

Blessed with the natural beauty of the ocean and surrounding green hills, Kamakura today attracts a large number of tourists.

Kamakura offers unique opportunities to experience Zen meditation, Kamakura-bori carving, Japanese green tea, kimonos and marine sports. Some aspects of Zen culture, which was brought to Japan from China during the Kamakura era, such as meditation, tea, shojin cuisine and Kamakura-bori, are rooted in the modern Japanese life, and you will be able to feel its history through the experiences.

You can also enjoy harmonious landscapes of mountains and the sea and of historical culture and nature across the city. In this trip, your host will bring you to explore the different shrines and temples as well as an ancient city and experience a time slip into Kamakura period.

This is the plan

Check out the plan below to see what you'll get up to with your local host. Feel free to personalize this offer with Sheilina.

  1. Meeting point

Meet at Kamakura Station - Kamakura to start your journey

  2. Itinerary

This is what our experience could look like, but it’s not set in stone! Once you book, you can chat directly with your host to make small tweaks to suit your preferences.

  3. Hasedera (長谷寺)

Hasedera (長谷寺) is a temple famous for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculptures in Japan and can be viewed in the temple's main building, the Kannon-do Hall. Hasedera is built along the slope of a wooded hill. The temple's main buildings stand halfway up the slope on a terrace which allows for nice views of the coastal city of Kamakura. Along the stairs leading up the slope stands the Jizo-do Hall with hundreds of small statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva who helps the souls of deceased children to reach paradise. The temple entrance is located at the base of the slope. A pretty garden with ponds welcomes visitors as they enter the grounds. A small temple hall in the garden is dedicated to Benten (also known as Benzaiten), a goddess of feminine beauty and wealth. Sculptures of Benten and other gods can be found in a small cave (Benten-kutsu) next to the hall.
  4. The Great Buddha of Kamakura

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara’s Todaiji Temple and some recent creations. The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since the late 15th century, the Buddha has been standing in the open air.
  5. Kamakura Komachi-dori Street鎌倉小町通り

Komachi-dori is always crowded. It has been calculated that 18 million people come to Komachi-dori every year. You can find everything from boutique fashion stores to souvenir gift shops along Komachi-dori. There are countless cafes, restaurants, cake shops, and bakeries. If you want to see the area in style, you can always rent a kimono and get pulled around Kamakura in one of the many rickshaws available for hire.
  6. Only if time permits, Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine (銭洗弁財天宇賀福神社)

Zeniarai Benzaiten is popular among tourists because the waters of a spring in its cave are said to be able to multiply the money washed in it. The tradition of washing money at the spring in the hope of seeing it multiply was born in 1257.

We have spent the last three days with Sheilina and I can’t say enough good things about her. With her we experienced culture, food, shrines, temples and so much more. We spent time with her in the Shibuya district, the Asakusa district (including the Sensoji Temple), and, my favorite, a day trip to Kamakura. You won’t be disappointed if she is your guide. Excellent guide!

I am so grateful for my tour with Sheilina! I was first inspired by the listing of Kamakura as I had no plans to visit and I am so glad I booked this tour. It was an easy train from Tokyo to meet Sheilina at the station where we proceeded to the sites. The beauty and serenity of Hasedera as well as the stunning Great Buddha of Kamakura was so worth the travel. We also did some shopping and dining. Sheilina was a great guide and very flexible and kind. I would definitely recommend her!One of my favorite experiences in Japan!

I've been to Japan a couple of times before and wanted to see and experience something new and sheilina created a wonderful day itinerary in Yokohama. Patiently waiting until my interrupted train got me to the right location and introducing me to exceptional food... I had a wonderful day and look forward to returning for more adventures. Our host Sheilina was amazing! Friendly, helpful, accommodating, and very relaxed in explaining everything about the history of the area and temple. All of this in cold and windy weather, which could not dampen our day and experience. Great day tour!

Sheilina is definitely a 5 star guide! Enjoyed a fabulous walking tour with her in the Asakusa area and Sensoji Temple. Her knowledge of historical info and cultural insights were greatly appreciated. It was special to see the traditional Edo period architecture and speciality stores on the many side streets we explored. Lots of fun sampling various local delicacies from the Asakusa area and getting shopping tips too! She made it a wonderful and enjoyable experience even on a rainy day. Sheilina also has great sightseeing suggestions for other areas like Kamakura. We visited there and saw beautiful shrines which were even more impressive than Tokyo. Lots of interesting eateries, scenic parks and local shops. It was easy to get there on the train from Shibuya Station. I actually preferred Kamakura to Tokyo for sightseeing.Excellent, knowledgeable, friendly guide

The tour was informative and fun. Shelia was flexible as the tour progressed and even assisted us with purchases for various sun screens/moisturizers at local store, which was appreciated given our inability to read Japanese Yokohama Chinatown

Sheilina was in contact with us a few days prior to the tour, and again from the time we got off our train in Yokohama. She ensured we found our way to Landmark Tower to meet her, and greeted us with a bright smile and welcomed us to Yokohama. She customized our tour for us, since we didn't want to walk as much in the humidity and heat. We started the tour by taking the elevator up to the observation deck of the Landmark Tower, wrote our wishes for Tanabata Festival on colorful strips of paper, and stopped for blue swirled ice cream at the snack area. Then we took the Akaikutsu bus to the famous Red Brick Warehouse where we shopped and had a light snack. Our next stop was vibrant Yokohama Chinatown where we walked around and had dim sum at a restaurant she recommended. The crispy roast pork was the best we have ever had, and the variety of dim sum we tried was delicious! After lunch, Sheilina took us to a beautiful temple where we took many beautiful photos. I told Sheilina I wanted to buy some Japanese beauty products, so she took us shopping in a local drug store and recommended some of her favorite products. We really appreciated the personalized tour and how she paid attention to our individual needs, and kept it to a pace that was comfortable for us. We highly recommend Sheilina for any of your sightseeing needs. Next time we are in Japan, we will definitely book more tours with Sheilina. She was the absolute BEST!! : )1st Class Tour w/Sheilina : )
