An Unforgettable Offbeat Experience – Wine, Food & Friendship in Setúbal From the moment we met Rodrigo, we knew we were in for a special day. More than just a guide, he felt like a friend—easygoing, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the hidden gems of Setúbal’s wine countryside. Our journey took us through stunning landscapes, where rolling vineyards met the Atlantic breeze. Rodrigo curated a perfect balance of history, culture, and indulgence, making each stop feel intimate and unrushed. The wine tastings were exceptional, featuring unique local varieties we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. Paired with delicious regional food, it was a true sensory delight. Beyond the wine, Rodrigo’s personal insights and engaging storytelling made the experience truly memorable. Whether we were strolling through charming villages, castle of Palma, learning about traditional winemaking, or simply enjoying deep conversations, every moment felt authentic and special. If you’re looking for an offbeat, intimate, and immersive day trip from Lisbon, this is it. We left not just with incredible memories, but with a new friend in Rodrigo. Highly recommend! An Unforgettable Escape with Rodrigo

We had the pleasure of spending a day with Rodrigo. The tour started with a hotel pick up and drive to wine country in Setúbal. Rodrigo’s general knowledge of language, history, culture and the wine, along with his sense of humor and friendly demeanor kept us informed and entertained throughout the whole experience. We tired 7 different wines and ended the day having a lunch in a family owned local restaurant in Palmela. Food was authentic and fresh and the people were warm and kind. Overall a great experience! What a fantastic day.

We had a wonderful day with Joao visiting 2 wineries and stopping for a very nice lunch at a family owned restaurant. We had a large group of 9 people and some of us arrived late due to airline delays but Joao was very accommodating and flexible. He made arrangements to make sure we still were able to take a full advantage of our planned agenda. Joao is very knowledgeable about wines and the area’s history. He is also an interesting company to have a conversation. We really enjoyed our day and I highly recommend Joao. A great wine tasting tour with Joao

We had a brilliant day out with our guide, Ricardo, who showed us around the Setubal wine region. He gave us information on the vineyards we visited and the wines we tasted (which were all amazing). We were picked up from our apartment in Lisbon and returned again after our wonderful day. At our last tasting venue, we enjoyed a charcuterie platter of local produce, which was very good. We enjoyed our day out and would definitely recommend a tour with Joao & Friends and especially Ricardo!Excellent Wine Tour

Muitos anos a virar frangos is a Portuguese saying. Literally, it translates to ‘many years turning chickens‘. Figuratively, it is a playful expression that means ‘to have a lot of experience doing something‘. This is so appropriate to our experience with Paulo in so many ways. Paulo has a lot of experience with food and wine, not only as guide and a local, but also as a professional cook and ardent and knowledgeable fan. I would say connoisseur, but I suspect Paulo would shoot that down as being snobby. Paulo is knowledgeable and enthusiastic and his enjoyment and pride in Portugeuse cuisine, wine, and culture/history is evident and approachable. He was always thoughtful to check in on what we were interested in and what we would like to do, and willing to tailor our experience to us, and I am sure he could handle tailoring this tour to anyone (kids, dietary restrictions, etc). One recommendation based on some of the reviews I've read - to better tailor your experience: I've always found withlocals guides to be responsive via email - let the guide know ahead of time (at booking) so they can better prepare. Your time with the guide is limited, preplanning ensures a better experience if you have special interests or special needs. We're easy - no allergies, adventerous, and open to anything but not everyone is like us. So you do you but do your part, too. That aside, I have full trust that Paulo could handle anything thrown at him on the fly. He's a great guide who wants you to love the cuisine and culture of Portugal as much as he does. Experience-wise: We were picked up on time and transported to three wineries in a modern, clean, and safe vehicle. Note: have breakfast before your pickup if you haven't arranged it as part of your tour - only water is allowed to be consumed in the vehicle, so no snacking! Also note: Our guide did not join us in tastings as he was driving, in case anyone was concerned about that. A safe experience is a good experience; and the tour took this all into consideration. Paulo took the transit time to talk to us about food and wine so that in Paulo's own words: " instead of *talking* about wine at the vineyard you can just *drink wine!*" We had a lovely chat about Portugal, the national park where the first winery was located, cork trees, tiles, food, wine, the challenge of preserving traditional meals and folkways in an ever-globalizing world, and the benefits and drawbacks of tourism, among other topics (but mostly focused on food and wine). This was my husband's first time and second time to Portugal, but the last visit I did not really make it much beyond the city center, so it was amazing to exit the city and get to Azeitão and Setúbal. A totally different vibe for sure! The wineries were all lovely, each in their own way, and it was a nice range of size / business model/ product. The pours were generous and the last stop included a really amazing charcuterie board to go with our drinks. Some of the winery visits are by appointment, so while we had a schedule to stick to, Paulo made sure we never felt hurried or rushed and was gentle and respectful about keeping us on track. Midday, we stopped for lunch (optional and self-pay). While the guides will never impose - don't be *that guy* and do treat them to lunch. Having Paulo help us select dishes and wine and learn about cuisine was well worth the (inexpensive) price of his lunch. I also got to eat freshly grilled whole sardine - my last visit I had missed the sardine run so ... Thanks to Paulo for showing me how to navigate a whole sardine like a local (without judgement and without making me feel ignorant)! I love canned sardines, but freshly caught then grilled ones are a revelation. I can now understand why fresh, grilled sardines are both Paulo's and a national favorite. In between winery visits, we also went to a tile studio - this one is legit. It was much, much smaller than I expected - as a consumer most everything I buy is so made by machine and automation and is soulless. As Paulo pointed out, the tiles or azulejos will cost a little more than what you find in the tourist shops (and are likely made in China) but are well-worth the money due to the excellent quality as well as the skills of a talented human being that go into them. They make wonderful gifts . What I loved is that I got to see the tile artists at work: Two very talented ladies doing the inital colorwork/drawings for tiles to be produced, working on giant easels in a compact, sunny, and bright studio area and then around a corner and into the ceramics section where I got to see a gentleman applying the first coat of glazes to a tile. By hand. With a little squirt/applicator-tip bottle. As someone who regularly glues their fingers together when using a bottle of glue, this blew my mind. Overall experience: a complete, interesting, and worthwhile experience with Paulo as charming, knowledgeable, enthusiasti, and caring guide. I highly recommend this experience (and Paulo), so much in fact, if I ever get back, I'd do the tour again. Right now the best I can do is recommend to everyone checking it out on WithLocals. Also, now I want to move to Setúbal, learn how to cut cork and work in a vineyard! Thank you, Paulo! Fab food, winning wine, amazing azulejos

We booked the wine tasting day for our family and we were absolutely delighted!! Rodrigo was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He shared stories, information and many details we didn’t think to ask about. Our kids (ages 18-23) raves about the experience. I would not hesitate to book another wine tour with him, and highly recommend you ask for him to lead your tour. Thank you so much Rod!Outstanding day!!

Joao picked us up at hotel in Lisbon and showed us three very different wine experiences - the oldest wine cellar in Portugal, an agricultural farm/vineyard, and an industrial site. We had plenty to drink and a delicious cheese board at the second winery. We had a big breakfast before we left because we knew we wouldn't have a full lunch on the tour, which ended up being perfect. We had a baby with us and Joao was incredibly accommodating and kind. I recommend the tour to anyone visiting Lisbon!Great wine tour

We were a larger group (16) going for half a day of winery tour and wine tasting. It was a personalised tour. The organisation was very smooth with Joao, as well as the communication. The minibus was very comfortable. Our guide Rodrigo was friendly and helpful, and shared good information about the wine and the region. He managed the timing well, despite our unusually large group. The landscapes were stunning and the wines good, although unequally. The finger food (local cheese, crackers, olives...) was a bit too light. However, we had a chance to have lunch in a local restaurant with excellent products indicated by Rodrigo (not included in the price). It was interesting to see the cellars of the historical winery. All in all we enjoyed the experience and I would definitely recommend the service of Joao and friends.Professionnal and friendly

Definitely recommend booking with Joao if you're interested in doing a wine tour in Lisbon! The pick up was extremely smooth and they were even kind enough to drop us off at the airport afterward. The wine tour takes you to some really beautiful places and of course you get to taste amazing wines and cheeses. Joao spoke the best English we've experienced in Portugal which made communication so easy. He is very knowledgeable about the vineyards and wines as well as some fun tidbits here and there when driving. We learned a lot but it never felt "forced". Thank you very much Joao!Awesome experience

The perfect tour to experience some wineries/vineyards close to Lisbon This was a really unique experience to be able to head south of the river and see Azeitão and Setúbal. The wineries were all different and you get to learn about some Portuguese history and then also chill in the countryside with amazing wine! It really is a good value and I’m considering doing it again with future visitors/guests. We loved hearing about wines to a certain extent, and really enjoyed our tour with Paulo because he made things flexible and fun from a local’s perspective and even took us to a azulejo/tile shop between wineries. They are a diverse team that will ensure you have an unforgettable time. Best tour for wineries close to Lisbon

We enjoyed our day out with Paulo. Paulo is an enthusiastic ambassador for all things Portuguese. We visited 3 wineries, seeing different perspectives of the wine industry there. The hosts at the wineries were very helpful and friendly as well. Had some excellent cheese as well. Fortunately the vehicle was big enough to carry our wine purchases! For lunch Paulo pointed out a very local place that was delightful and so good. Have him join you for lunch for extra conversation, he enhanced our knowledge of traditional foods and wine. Trying to accomplish this outing on our own would have been trying, get yourself a local guide like Paulo!Fun day to Setubal

We had a nice day, and our driver was an enthusiastic ambassador of Portugal although he didn't know anything about wine. However, our tour did not fit the description of a private tour with Jao (we never met him) at small wineries. Our driver took us to two large-scale production, pretty commercialized wineries where we joined several other people for pre-booked tours of the wineries. Our last stop may have been at a small winery...unsure. We sat outside (very pretty) and tasted five wines without introduction or conversation about what we were drinking. This is a fine tour for people with only a rudimentary knowledge of wine, but folks who truly want to talk wine and taste some of the interesting and innovative wines being produced in Portugal might look elsewhere. Our tour experience

We spent amazing day exploring wine country just outside Lisbon with Rod. While I am sure all the locals for these tours are great, Rod was certainly the perfect pick for us. His practical passion for wine go beyond that of nearly guide I've had around the world. He listened to our preferences, helped us narrow in on the varietals we liked the most and helped recommend other wines based on what we liked. You'll be hard pressed to find someone as knowledgeable and passionate about their work. I actually think we were almost always the last group at each winery as we would get some into tasting and talking about the wine. We never felt rushed or pressured to purchase anything (although I do think we managed to bring home about 20L of wine!). As you'll immediately realize in Portugal, it does not take much $$ to find an amazing bottle of wine (arguably the best use of 5 Euros I've ever found). If you're pre-planning far enough ahead, bring and extra box/suitcase/etc. to bring home some of the gems you'll find. You're already lucky enough to be in Portugal and if you end up on wine tour with Rod, you'll likely find yourself enjoying one of the best days of any of vacation/holiday you've had. Amazing Day w/ an Even More Amazing Guide

Setubal is probably my new favorite place in the entire world. We spent two trips with Joao's company (the other one was the Fisherman's village tour). Joao was knowledgeable, friendly, and really knew his stuff! The best part was Quinta Alcombe, where there are animals and a cat who loves potato chips. The wine at this place was also my very favorite. My only recommendation to make this even better is to include lunch in the middle, or at the very end. The light snacks were great, but we were pretty hungry at the end (and maybe a little tipsy).Wine Wine Wine! And a cat

The day we took the tour was our last day in Lisbon and it was the absolute perfect ending to our visit! Rodrigo, our guide, was very knowledgable ,easy going and spoke perfect English. There was not a question he did not have the answer to so we ended up with a very good idea about the Setubal Wine region, it's wines and enjoyed a visit to 3 Wineries that included tastings. As a surprise Rodrigo took us to a Tile making company where we got a glimpse of the incredibly labor intensive way of making tiles by hand ( no machines!!). It's truly an art! We enjoyed this tour to the countryside away from the big tourist groups and the personable service and guidance. We highly recommend it! My day was full of little surprises and a fair amount of magic! First of all I was picked up at the hotel which was super convenient! Then there was a small breakfast sitting in the sunshine outside a wonderful little Pasteleria just opposite the first winery to be visited. The visit itself was a fabulous experience with a super guide. There were 3 winery visits in all and 2 more surprises but I won't tell all so as not to spoil it for others. Altogether a most interesting day with a super guide! Great day with Rodrigo!

One thing was how knowledgeable he is and how much he taught us, but he is just such an amazing person and we spent the whole day laughing. This wine tasting and tour was incredibly personal and great! We were picked up at our hotel and driven about 45 minutes to the Setúbal region. We arrived early to our winery and our guide bought us coffee and baked goods at the bakery outside. Then we went to a traditional wine tour. The first winery was one of the oldest and more of a traditional wine tour experience. The second stop was a small personal winery. We also got to see more of the countryside. This place had incredible unique options and our guide explained so much about the wine making process and the wines. The last place we went we actually tried some spirits. I imagine we could have suggested to stick to wine but it was great to try some of the local liquors and spirits. This was the most romantic and unique stop. We loved the personal aspect of each stop. Our guide pointed out all sorts of landmarks. He was incredibly well versed in the knowledge about the wine and the region. If there was any question he did not know he always asked. We have done wine tours in several other questions and this was by far my favorite one yet! Absolutely worth it! I would do it again if we go back to the area. Lisbon Wine Tastings

More about me

Because of one of my hobbies (off road driving), I got to know Portugal inside out, literally “off the beaten track”. This led me to organize expeditions with friends and family, taking them to places of extreme beauty that aren't normally seen. I will share with you all the places, people and culture I know and love.

Having our "simple" Mediterranean lifestyle in mind, I will take you through our wine, food, nature and history in a relaxed but informative way. Come and enjoy!
