Francesco was a really brilliant guide. He sat us down to start with and invited us to a coffee at a local cafe to ask what we would particularly like from our tour of Verona. That was a nice touch. Whilst Juliet's House was closed on a Monday and the terrace closed off for filming, this really didn't matter as there is so much to see and do. Francesco is so enthusiastic and passionate about Verona and gave us a very interesting and enjoyable tour of the highlights. My daughter and I schedule this day trip to Verona from Venice. We met our guide Francesco a the designated spot and he gave a an introduction to the history and culture of Verona before we started out walk. He was very knowledgeable on history, architecture fiction and facts. We strolled through the streets with many opportunities for photos and a stop a the coloseum and the market before heading to "Juliet's House". There were 6 of us on the tour with Frank. We’re all gardeners, and Frank made a point of showing us interesting plants, such as the oldest Plane tree in Italy. He gave us a ton of information about the history of the area, making it fun for us by giving us “points” for remembering important facts. He checked often that we were absorbing what he told us and would say things in different ways to make sure we got it. Our tour guide was not available on the day, but sent another “Maria” in her place which was kind of her. Our Maria was an absolute delight from the moment we met her. What a way to start a walking tour - thunderstorms in Verona. But any concerns about the background weather were soon swept away by Francesco's bright and enthusiastic love and admiration for his city and his ability to share it all with us. While the rain dampened down, Francesco's engaging stories about Verona didn't. He not only led us through, and demonstrated evidence of, the history of the city (including a visit to a department store to show us the ruins of portion of an ancient Roman wall within the shop, explaining to us how many Roman towns had been "built over" through the centuries), but also related the true stories behind the tales of Romeo and Juliet and the powerful families of the city and their contributions to the history of Verona. Starting with a visit to the Roman arena, an amphitheatre still in use for concerts today, through seeing evidence of some of Napoleon's time in the city, visiting the market, discussing how the City has rules to maintain its unique architecture and appearance and ending up with the (not so old) tourist attraction of Juliet's balcony, Francesco kept us interested and informed throughout the whole tour. A walking, enlightening tour not to be missed! Hidden Gems shone despite thunderstorms
