What a great afternoon. Alp met us at our hotel as it was on the way. He explained the tram system and made us feel comfortable using it for further exploration. We tasted at non-tourist venues which helped us order at other restaurants as everything we had either delicious or something we needed to try. My favorite things were Mantis with garlic yogurt (pasta) at a small streetside restaurant. The big dishes at a restaurant which included an amuse of a dome of bulgar surrounding spiced meats and chili oil poured at the table, Pide which is a traditional Turkish pizza style dish, followed by the best kabob I've ever eaten! There were other stops and we got to learn more about the culture and daily life. We really clicked with Alp, who not just knowledgeable, but interested in the differences and similarities of our cultures. Great tour! We decided to start our adventure in Istanbul with a food tour on day 1 to give us some insights into the culture. Disappointingly our host Sozum cancelled with 10 minutes notice, but to our delight Muhammed stepped in at the last minute. As a 22 year old he interacted wonderfully with an Australian couple in their late 60’s. The tour was excellent and led us to many experiences that we would never have been game to try.we couldn’t thank Mohammed enough. We always take a private tour of every city we visit. This was by far the most enjoyable. Not your typical tour full of useless facts and dates that usually crowd most tours. This one is about hidden gyms and spots that only locals know. It was not rushed and Deniz adjusted the pace and variety based on how we felt. We walked when the area was not to be missed and we took a taxi when we felt warm from the sun. We now love Istanbul after seeing it through Deniz’s eyes. While it was a food tasting tour ( and the food did not disappoint at all), it would have been enjoyable for the sightseeing alone. Alp's food tour was, without a doubt, the highlight of our stay in Istanbul. We started in the Bohemian neighborhood of Cihangir, where artists, street cats, and cafes abound. We loved the relaxed vibe of the community and never would have discovered it without going on the tour. Alp introduced us to his favorite comfort food of Turkish dumplings (mantı) at a small restaurant where they were making them by hand. We had the more traditional boiled dumplings, as well as to the crispy fried ones; both were delicious. Also tasty we're zucchini fritters and a cabbage roll stuffed with meat and rice. We then wound through the neighborhood, taking in street art along the way, including a mural of an angry panda, one of series meant to call attention to the destruction of natural habitats, as well as a movie star mural on the side on a historic cinema. We sweetened out palate with a visit to a store that has been making Turkish delight since the 1700s, tasting "cezerye," a caramelized carrot candy with nuts and shredded coconut. Then we were off to the "sour" by visiting a shop that pickles everything! We opted for spicy beets, pickles, and cabbage. Remember to drink the pickle juice too! Because we began our tour at 4pm, we were able to beat the dinner rush to a restaurant known for a Turkish style pizza with a super thin crust that you roll up and eat like a burrito with parsley, lettuce, and lemon juice. We tried the tasty staple of Beyti Kebab, then went bold with raw meatballs (!!!) wrapped in lettuce. We washed things down the yogurt drink ayran, as well as the popular Turkish black tea. By the time we left, there was a long line out the door of locals. Because we wanted to avoid caffeine in the evening, we finished off with herbal tea (Linden) at a cafe whose name translates roughly to "the buffalo doesn't sink" on the thick coffee grounds, a relaxed cafe with a friendly ambiance. Alp was a delight to spend 3 hours with. He's so knowledgeable about so many subjects, from food to art to music to historical sites. He gave us great recommendations for other neighborhoods to explore and for other foods to try. We feel so fortunate he was our guide and would recommend his food tour wholeheartedly. We finished the evening feeling full, relaxed, and refreshed, with a greater appreciation for Istanbul's incredible, vibrant culture, history, and cuisine. My wife and I are foodies, but this tour is for everyone. Our 18 year old niece and our 16 year old twins were enthused by adventuring into the backstreets and food beyond the kebab. We booked this tour expecting an authentic local food experience, as advertised by Withlocals. Unfortunately, it fell far short of our expectations. Before the tour, we clearly communicated that we were food enthusiasts looking for hidden gems and genuine Istanbul flavours—the kind you can’t find without a knowledgeable local guide. Instead, the majority of the tour was spent walking through a modern shopping mall, and the food selections were uninspired and ordinary. For the price we paid, both the quality and quantity of food were unacceptable. What made it worse was our guide admitting that he doesn’t cook and simply relied on TripAdvisor or recommendations from other guides to choose stops. If we wanted a generic tourist experience, we could have done that ourselves—without paying a premium for a foodie guide. Given how strongly Withlocals markets these tours as curated by passionate locals, this was a major letdown. We cannot recommend this company for food tours in Istanbul. Not a food tour, just a mall walk

Alp is excellent. This is an great way to experience the true Istanbul. Comfortably, safely, and casually. Alp to us to multiple locations, made us comfortable, asked us thoughtfully about our food leanings, brought out dishes, carefully explained what everything was and why it was part of the culture. We booked only two days before and were super happy about the tour and Alp being our guide! Super easy to meet, he personalized the tour (we had a baby and buggy with us) and was in general very thoughtful of the choices he made and what he wanted to show us. We loved all the choices and found it super interesting to learn about the more local relationship to the food and Cihangir area. The food tour with Emre was everything we had wanted it to be! He is very warm and friendly and knows Istanbul so well. He curated a really good food tour for my teenage son and me. I felt like we had an intimate look at restaurants that are away from all of the tourists and really experienced the food of Istanbul. He also showed us several shops where we could buy mementos, again these were away from the inflated prices in the Sultanahmet area, and gave us several excellent options for eating in the Galata Tower neighborhood. We booked the 10 tastings of Istanbul as our first activity in the city. We were keen to try lots of the local cuisine and learn about the city and country. Faruk was a a great choice as our guide. He showed us round the Beyoğlu area taking us to four different cafes to eat a variety of food which was all delicious with plenty of sight seeing in between. We discussed food, culture, history and general life in Istanbul and really enjoyed his hospitality and company. A great way to start our trip and he gave us plenty of information on other things to do during our visit. After being royally fed we spent the afternoon using the ferries to see the city and let our food go down 😀First day in Istanbul
