Raffaele was a wonderful guide. He was flexible and easy to communicate with in the planning stages. He met us promptly at the meeting point. Unfortunately there were 5 cruise ships in Naples port, but he made us feel like we were there with just our group. He navigated the ruins like a pro. What a wonderful tour of this great sight. Raffaele was an excellent guide who made sense of what we were seeing. He imparted his knowledge in an interesting way and bought Pompeii to life for us. We felt overwhelmed by the site at first but soon began to understand the layout of the buildings. By the time we visited Herculaneum the next day with Raffaele, we were becoming experts in architectural features! He has a lovely way and was very caring with my husband who has sight issues. We truly loved our time with Raffaele. I doubt we would have even made it into the site without him as the entrance was total chaos on the day we went and his advance purchase of the tickets and navigation of the entry point made it so much easier. Having a private tour guide really made the experience most enriching and much better than being in a large impersonal tour group. His archeological background and intimate knowledge of the site from having worked at the digs provided invaluable depth and insight into the history of Pompeii and the lives of its unfortunate inhabitants. We were able to experience the most important areas of this immense site in the short two hours we spent with him. His tour was the highlight of visit to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. It was well worth the cost. If you plan on visiting Pompeii, do yourself a favor and try to book Raffaele! The absolute best way to see Pompeii

Raf was great. He thoroughly engaged us as a family of four, including our two girls of 14 and 11. He communicated well when booking via WithLocals and in preparation/on the day for meeting up! He was not patronising at all and taught us all so much and we knew a bit before visiting. He was keen to answer all our questions and the 3 hour tour was perfectly broken with chances to sit and talk rather than constant walking/talking. Also took us to Villa dei Mystiere as we had the Plus tickets. He seemed to enjoy that as much as we did! Raffaele was fantastic. We did a day trip from Rome with my husband and 2 kids (13 and 15). Unfortunately both kids were a bit unwell on the day, however, they still loved their Pompeii experience, largely due to the information and insights shared by Raffaele. He was friendly, easy to understand and able to answer any questions without hesitation. He is very passionate about the Pompeii site and the discoveries there. It was very busy on the day we were there, however, it did not bother us at all as Raffaele was able to take us on routes that were not overrun with people. Rafaello described the history, life and times of Pompeii in a way that showed not just the remarkable ingenuity of Roman society, but also the awful tragedy that happened there. It was completely fascinating. On a practical note he was clever at avoiding the crowds and finding somewhere quiet so that we could all hear him. I asked specifically for Raffaele on the basis of his academic credentials (archaeologist with PhD) and this turned out to be a good decision. Raffaele accompanied us on our visit to Herculaneum (which is much less of a tourist hell than Pompei) and was able to give us in two hours a complete picture of the site and its history, of course with focus on what happened in the year 79 when the Vesuvius eruption destroyed the town. Raffaele is a very well informed professional who is able to descend from academic level to easily understandable explanations and nice stories about every day life in the Roman era. And on top of that he is a very nice person with sense of humour and a great love for Campania and all its classical treasures. The only reason I can think of to not recommend him as a guide is, that he should not get too busy, because I want him to be available for a visit to one of the other sites when we come back here.TOP guide of academic level

Pompeii is such an overwhelming experience and so vast that it's difficult to fit it all in in one trip. That is unless you're being guided by someone who's hands had actually sifted the volcanic soil of Pompeii. Raphael was an experience not to be missed. We were so glad that we managed to book him. Our 3 hours in Pompeii with him, I imagine, was worth six hours self-guided. No exaggeration. There was no question, no detail, that he couldn't provide insight. Is enthusiasm for Pompeii after a professional career studying it, is undiminished. Is communication skills and storytelling is unrivaled. We really couldn't recommend Rafael any more highly and if this is the one time you go to Pompeii make sure that you have an archaeologist of his calibre guide you. It is worth every cent. Each year, as part of our annual girls' trip, we hire a guide to give us special insight into our chosen location. This year Raffaele showed us around Herculaneum and Naples' Archeological Museum, and he was one of the best guides we've have over many years and across many countries. He elevated what would already have been a good experience into a great one. Raffaele is a highly-trained working archaeologist who’s also an accredited and award-winning tour guide. Time living in London perfected his English. It was obvious within the first few minutes that we’d chosen well. Not only did he know his stuff, and have a great sense of humour, but he knew exactly how to time our route to avoid crowds, where to stand for the best views, and which highlights to bring out that visitors on their own might walk right by. We all know a fair amount about the Ancient Romans but we never flustered him with our questions. Instead, he quickly figured out he could dig deeper and throw more detail our way. We loved it ... particularly all the quirky little details we would never have discovered on our own. Beyond the ancient Romans, he also gave us some fantastic tips for sightseeing and dining out for the rest of our trip. If I were to return to Naples, Raffaele would be my first stop. Raffaele brings the past to life

We toured Pompeii and Herculaneum with Raffaele. He was clearly very expert but also quite broad, able to talk about trade patterns, social practices, artistic motifs, and even some technical matters (building usages, plumbing) with great clarity. He also seemed a true archeologist, able to give alternative explanations where scholarly debate was not yet settled. This may make him sound nerdy but he was lively, cheerful, and witty. I cannot begin to express how much we appreciated Raffaele’s expertise during our tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This was quite literally the best tour guide experience we’ve ever had. From the moment we were picked up by the driver his staff set up (who was also kind and professional) to the moment we were dropped off, we felt relaxed and taken care of so we could focus on the incredible beauty and history of everything around us. Raffaele himself is very kind, easy going, professional, and has that classic Italian charm many Americans think of when it comes to the locals in Italy.
