Off The Beaten Track Rome & Street Art Bike Tour in Rome - ea41e74e0efe2911427432236c66a043

Love street art? Want to escape the touristy crowds and get to know the real Rome? Then grab your bike and let’s experience the Eternal City like a local. Explore cool, hipster neighborhoods and see some seriously impressive giant street art murals. The best part? By bike, you’ll be from one place to another in a flash!

Hop on and follow me to the trendy Testaccio district. This area is a real nightlife hotspot, and also has some cool ancient ruins. I’m talking about the old Roman port and the Pyramid of Cestius. We’ll pause to check out both of these historic spots.

The Testaccio neighborhood is seriously reinventing itself! We are going to head over to one of the coolest renovation examples here, an ex-slaughterhouse which is now a contemporary art museum. Now that is a transformation!

Ready to see some street art? Head over to the gritty Ostiense area. This neighborhood has stunning street art. Admire the giant murals and take in the hipster vibes. Fancy somewhere a bit greener? Explore Garbatella, Rome’s garden city. We’ll pedal through this leafy suburb and check out the many secret gardens.

Want to shake the route up a bit? This tour is completely customizable so if there are any spots that you are desperate to see let me know and I will add them to our route.

We had a very good trip with Nicola. He told us a lot of things about Trastevere and Testaccio from ages ago and from nowadays. He knows a lot and was very enthousiastic to share that with us. He also knows where to have a stop for the best Italian icecream in Rome! You can tell him what your interests are and he'll make a personalised plan for you, which you can still change while you're on your way. We saw a lot of murals, also visited a very peaceful cemetery and saw the piramid. It was a pleasure to cycle through Rome, especially with a guide like Nicola! Great trip!

My partner & I had such a great time cycling around Trastevere, Testaccio Garbatella & into Ostiense. As a native to these neighbourhoods, Nicola made places come alive with stories from his childhood & young adult years; he also made history come alive with interesting details about the landscape & buildings. We enjoyed a coffee at the market where Nicola also negotiated with a stall holder to let us taste some cheeses before deciding which to buy. Great cycling with Nicola!

While this was a bit ambitious for the less-practiced cyclists in our family, Nicola was very caring in accommodating us all. It was an unique insight into the emerging and contemporary corners of Rome, as well as some hidden special hidden highlights and flavours. This personalised tour really brought to life a side of Rome outside the guide book. An unique insight to Rome

Nicola was a great host. He was patient and kind and demonstrated a lot of passion for his city. The tour takes you to places and through neighborhoods you wouldn’t necessarily visit. Cycling through the streets of Roma is a unique experience and Nicola shows you how to navigate the streets safely and with confidence. Our entire family loved the experience and this was definitely the highlight of our time in Rome. An Exceptional Experience

Nicola was an amazing guide! He provided the exact amount of information so as to not be overwhelming in detail, and yet still reflected a deep and reflective knowledge of the sites he showed us. This your will take you on your good-quality bike beyond Rome’s usual trappings, showing you the spaces where Romans live while still covering historical details of this layered city. Be sure to ask him to take you to Yaluz - a food stall - for lunch. Think Ottolenghi does Rome: incredible, mesmerizing, delicious food. Thanks Nicola! Informative and delicious

We had a lovely morning cycling around Rome with our son who is 7 years old. Nicola arranged a great trip which included parts of Rome which we wouldn’t otherwise have seen - the highlight was lunch at the market in Testaccio which was fantastic. Thank you Nicola for a memorable morning. Family bike trip around Rome

We had a wonderful off the beaten path, 3 hour bike ride with NICOLA! We took the tour on our first afternoon in Rome--it was ideal to get some exercise after being still on a plane for 8 hours! We toured Testaverde, Tesstaccio and Garibaldi neighborhoods to see STREET ART. It was lovely to get out of the center city and see some neighborhoods. Nicola had a lot of knowledge about the artwork and the HISTORY of the neighborhoods. He was adaptable to our needs and very patient with me at the end of the trip when I got tired. We felt very safe as we drove in some parts of the wacky Rome traffic. If you want an unusual tour that is exciting with an awesome guide you should try this one! We are so very glad that we began our trip to Rome with NICOLA. Grazie Mille Nicola!THE PERFECT ADVENTURE!

Cycling with Nicola was a relaxed and lovely experience. He had thought well about the route but was open for a lot of other suggestions from our side. I cycled with my mom and we had the best time! We would definitely recommend to spend the tour with Nicola, especially because he knows the best gelato places! :)Beautiful and personalized tour

Nicola is a wonderful guide. Passionate about cycling, he was the best possible choice for our excursion. Because we are travelling with pre-teenagers that are not used to the Roman ways on roads, we asked to see areas with less traffic. Nicola took us to the Appian Way as well as a beautiful natural park/area just outside the city’s walls. We would never have seen such wonders on our own. Off the beaten path

We had a very interesting cycle tour with Nicola. He showed us some nice non touristic neighborhoods like Testaccio and especially Garbatella with beautiful street art. We also went to a former industrial area that is now a school of architecture. Nicola is an easy going and enthousiastic guide. Its was very kind of him to do some explaining in Italian, gliel'ho chiesto, perché sto imparando la lingua. If you want to see the unusual Rome, go with Nicola. The unsual Roma

Nicola was a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. His bike tour is a great way to get to know Rome and get your sea legs in the city, especially since Nicola will personalize your route for you and take you to see whatever you'd like. While his knowledge of his home neighborhood of Trastevere was much appreciated, Nicola is a bit of a speedy biker, so this tour might not be for the faint of heart or inexperienced bikers. Since Rome is not necessarily a bike-friendly city, you should expect to dip and dodge in and out of traffic along the way.A bike tour of Rome

Took a tour with Nicola to see street art murals in a few areas of the city. He added to the experience by taking us to a university that was formerly a slaughter house to see how it was transformed and another building that had been repurposed as an artist studio. Fabulous. A bit more biking than I had expected (longest stop is at the university) so if you are planning on taking the tour remember that you will have hours of biking through traffic and hills. Fantastic street art murals

Cycling is always the best way to see and feel the town! Easier than walking and you can see a lot! Say goodbye to the noisy squares and feel how the ordinary people are living just behind the historical city center. Change supermarkets to the open markets, enjoy street art and find the connection of the Roma and River, Tiber. Rent Nicola and just follow him! After this tour I had many new ideas where to go and what to do.Find and feel the ordinady city!

Nicola guided our family on bikes through a fascinating adventure of modern street art in Rome. We visited what used to be a slaughterhouse now housing a variety of mural artists. We also visited a suburb where artists from all over the world were invited to create murals the sides of the apartment buildings. It was a very enjoyable tour. Half October we (a group of 6 friends ) had a great bicycletour with Nicola our guide. We were interested in the not so well known parts of Rome. We’d like to see beautiful murals especially in the Tor Maranchia area. The contact I had with Nicola was very pleasing and together with him we personalized the tour with the pyramid of Cestius (+ protestant cemetry) and the basilica of St Paul. Nicola is very enthousiastic and relaxed. Punctual in the contacts and quick in reactions. Next time Rome will be on a bike the Appian Way and of course with Nicola! Thanks and mille grazie for this surprising tour! Augusto de Paesi Bassi Old and new!

The Street Art tour is a must-see. I have been to Rome several times and this tour took me to neighborhoods I hadn't explored. There are many cool and interesting murals and paintings that you wouldn't find or notice on your own. Nicola was a great guide. He knew a lot about each area, being a true local of Trastevere, and shared some other tips about the area that I was able to go check out after. Highly recommend him and this tour!Nicola + Street Art = Awesome experience

Book this tour! What a treat it was to go on this bike tour with Nicola. My partner and I were hesitant to go after seeing other bikes on the streets of Rome but I am so happy we decided to go. Nicola makes sure you are safe the entire time and you will feel comfortable very quickly. The murals, the facts and the quirky places we went to were incredible. This graffiti tour was great! I saw amazing graffiti in very special areas in Rome where I would'nt have arrived by myself. It's so interesting and inspiring to know more about these places by someone who lives there and is so passionate about graffiti. Nicola is a wonderful guide, he gives a lot of information but also give space to experience things by yourself. I would highly recommend this tour, maybe the best tour I did in Rome! Nicola is a nice guy and he was able to reschedule our tour. He took us to a local bar to have a local experience. We also enjoyed the gelato place. In between this, things didn’t go well. He took us through this ally from a harrow film! We actually thought something bad was going to happen. Then we ended up at this abandoned butchery … the harrow film continues. Please Nicola, don’t continue this route unless your guest ask for it because we sure didn’t want to experience this on vacation. Not was we were expecting

Absolut empfehlenswert. Toller Nachmittag und Abend mit Nicola

Nicola guided us through Testaccio for 2.5 hours and told us lots of interesting stories. From the Roman origins to the contemporary alternative scene of the neighbourhood. The visit to the "Cimitero Accatolico", a very suggestive small cemetery with graves of famous people like John Keats, Andrea Camilleri and Goethe's son, was a successful conclusion. We would do a guided tour with Nicola again any time. A very varied tour through off-the-beaten-track tourist hotspots

With Nicola we encountered three major topics in Rome that can tell a story no less than the common sights: One is about the mechanics of economic life of an immense roman city that drew resources from the entire empire Two is the real scale of the roman city, a 4x4 km walled city with an impressive wall that largely survived to this very date. Three, a very interesting urban renovation project of Rome. Highly recommended! Muli A tour with Nicola

Thank you Nicola for a fun unique experience. We really had a blast with you and a highlight would have been the special inside tour of the students murals, along with our rooftop view with special access!!! Having appartivo and drinks at each stop on our tour was great fun!! Meeting people along the way and sharing laughs was a nice way to experience another side of Rome . Nicola is a lovely guy who loves to show his city and perspectives to other people. He even opened up a workplace filled with beautiful art so I could have a look around and afterwards we had lunch together at the foodstall of his brother, which was great as well. A customized trip with Nicola

More about me

I was born and raised in the centre of Rome, in Trastevere when the neighborhood was still full of artisan shops and you could count the restaurants on the fingers of one hand. I experienced the slow transformation of the city centre and today, like when I was a child, I like to show the most authentic spots of Rome.

I'm a geographer and this helps me to make my tours much more appealing involving you as much as possible and focusing on a mix of tips for travellers, historical information, anecdotes and curiosities. I love many outdoor activities but my biggest passion is surfing.

I work as a free lance consultant on European funded projects but since several years I work with some American universities in Rome offering outdoor activities to their students. I speak Italian, English, Spanish and a bit of Turkish.
