This is my second tour with Matteo and I had requested to not repeat locations from our first tour. He was very proactive with suggestions and planned a seamless and stimulating walk where I could experience and capture the energy of the local neighbourhoods, temples and markets. We covered a lot of ground and I would not been able to see so many sights if I had tried to find them on my own. He was very knowledgable and shared stories that only a long-time HK resident would know. I spent 4 great hours with Matteo strolling around the city from HK center to Kowloon and back. The tour was highly customisable, Matteo understood my needs and interpreted them perfectly offering a fantastic tour which allowed me to discover the city as I would have never been able to do by myself. Matteo is nice dynamic and forthcoming, knows a lot of stuff about the city, about its history and development and its unique population. We saw great places, weird places, authentic places and more touristic ones. We had great food along the way and I left with the final impression that I really made the right choice in asking Matteo to be my guide for a day. Matteo is entertaining and quite a lively personality, but if I had my time again, I definitely wouldn't do this tour. We signed on to do photography, and it became clear within the first thirty minutes that it either wasn't in his skill set or he wasn't particularly interested in doing photography that evening. I'd recommend Matteo as a general guide, but choose someone else for your photo-fix.Not a photography tour

We had such a great time on our tour with Matteo. He was personable, knowledgeable, accommodating and fun! He listened to what we were looking for in the tour, and also took us to places he thought we would like when we weren't sure of what we were looking for. Matteo definitely showed us Hong Kong from a local/native point of view. He took us to a meat and fish market that was frequented by locals and not a tourist trap, and to a local restaurant where we had a delicious lunch of dim sum. We took the subway, a bus and walked all over Hong Kong to get to the places we wanted to see. It was all great! My husband and I highly recommend Matteo as a tour guide. Matteo met my wife and I at our hotel. The tour included markets, a temple, a jail, an iconic tea room and several other points of interest. We could have walked through a market without a guide, but Matteo was great, explaining what several of the unusual things were. Before we went to the temple he explained what we were about to see and because of the new year why people were doing certain things. The tea room was filled to capacity with locals. It was dim sum and Matteo picked things off the carts as they went by and his selections were great..............except for the hen's feet (my wife liked them however). We took a few busses and Matteo paid for them, plus he stopped at a bakery and bought us a local pastry. Later in the day he bought us tea, and again later an egg boiled in tea that was delicious! We saw things we never would have seen on our own, and I doubt that larger tours saw many of the things we saw. And the best part................Matteo was fun. The day flew by. If you have a chance to book a tour with him I guarantee you won't be disappointedWhat a Great Day!

Matteo met us at the station and took us to some fantastic local areas giving my husband and I and our two boys a good Understanding of the local culture and lifestyle in Hong Kong . We visited the market , local streets and the fishing village . Matteo shared interesting info and gave us a genuine taste of the people, the food and the lifestyle . it did rain in the middle of the tour but Matteo managed to turn this into a fun experience and we continued onto the ferry , the tram and ended with delicious dumplings before heading off . thank you for sharing your personal stories experiences with us. The thing we hate the most of being tourists is feeling like a tourists. When moving from one selfie point to the next you ask yourself how living in the place you are visiting really looks like. I think the idea of Withlocals is to give you this very insight as if you were living there for a while…and this why we liked Matteo‘s very customized and spontaneous tour so much! It was a pleasure working with the photographer; he was a very nice person. However, to be honest, I feel the overall value of the photoshoot didn't quite align with the price I paid. As someone with experience in photography, I was a little disappointed by the lack of preparedness regarding suitable locations. We ended up taking quite a few shots in areas that didn't particularly lend themselves well to a photoshoot. Furthermore, I expected a more considered approach to framing and the incorporation of propped settings, especially concerning lighting. While I did receive some good photos in the end, the overall experience left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed given the investment.Was ok experience

Pros: - Guide: very friendly tour guide - Duration: 3 hours getting to know surrounding temple market area - everything became a bit of a blur at one point since we walked around so much - Included other stops: takes you places you would’ve never seen/noticed (not food related) which was unexpected but cool Cons: - Price: really expensive per person for the type of food you get to try (cheap eats / street food snacks) we wanted to know more about how things are cooked or its origins / history / its influence on HK culture. There was no food commentary. - Speed and lacking depth: tour was long but somehow felt rushed, Matteo speed walked around quickly pointing things out without much context / history or background. The food we tried was ok but there was no context or explanation to it In comparison to other food tours we’ve done, we felt like we didn’t learn much about Hong Kong’s food history / history or anything about the market/s. This felt like we had met an old friend who walked us around the neighborhood pointing out streets and shops while buying us snacks. He’s a really friendly guide though, but if you’re on a budget and really want to learn more about HKs food and its history, you might want to consider doing a larger tour group.Friendly guide but tour missed the mark

Matteo was a very nice and personable guy, and we appreciated his friendliness throughout the tour. That said, the overall experience didn’t quite meet our expectations. It felt like the tour lost momentum about two hours in, even though we had booked a full three hours. It seemed like he had run out of ideas or places to take us, which left the last part of the tour feeling a bit aimless. We were hoping for a more engaging and well-paced experience from start to finish. Perhaps he was just having an off day, but overall the tour felt a little underwhelming. Having said that, Withlocals was great in their service recovery. When I replied to their email asking for our feedback, they were apologetic and offered us a voucher for our next tour.

We found the tour very disappointing - we’ve done similar tours in other cities, and this one was by far the worst. Some of the food was delicious, but: - Others were very bad, without any recognition of this (we had sticks of Yak, which were basically fat; when I mentioned this, Matteo suggested I could do with some extra fat in me) - An hour in we’d had five courses; I asked what we were trying next and he recounted the five courses we’d already had. I then asked what we were doing for the remaining 1.5 hours of the tour and he couldn’t really answer - Some of the places we tried to go to were closed; which gave off the impression Matteo was unprepared - He didn’t provide much insight into the city or the origins of the food; when we asked questions he didn’t have an answer - He mentioned his budget a few times; we’d said in advance that we were happy to pay extra to the food stalls to try more, which he then didn’t want to let us do Overall it was a very poor experience, and we cut the tour short.Very Disappointing

We thoroughly enjoyed our “taste of Hong Kong” street food tour with Matteo. Communication was great from the started and he was easy to find at the agreed meeting place. He listened to our preferences and encouraged us to try some more challenging dishes (e.g. pigs ears!) since we told him we were adventurous eaters! The tour was not rushed and we felt that we got a really good feel for the nighttime culture in Kowloon. All the food was delicious, although we saw and learnt about so much more than just the food. Matteo was very knowledgeable about life in Hong Kong. He was very entertaining and showed us places we would never have found by ourselves! Took the personal guided tour with Matteo. He was great. Asked us what our preferences were, then proceeded to take us to a whole bunch of places that suited our interests and tastes. Tour included numerous stops at eateries and shops that we would have never found or even if we did find, would not have been brave enough to venture into on our own.
