We had a wonderful five-hour tour with Rui in Porto in mid-September. Coming from a family that has lived in Porto for generations, he was very knowledgeable and anxious to share his love for the city, which he did in perfect English. Porto is a very old city that has become quite trendy, with many visitors and young people, and Rui gave us a good sense of how that happened and its impact on the people who live there. We learned a great deal about Porto’s history, economy, and culture, both through Rui’s “standard” tour and in his responses to our many questions on a wide variety of topics. He paced the tour well, asking us if we were tired or hungry, and stopping to accommodate photos, etc. We had an interesting conversation over lunch about his family and life in general for people his age in this suddenly super popular city (although the food at the restaurant he chose was not very good). A small side note: If you want to see Livraria Lello, the beautiful bookstore that has become Porto’s number one tourist attraction thanks in part to its purported connection to JK Rowling and Harry Potter, be prepared to wait in a long line (€8) or get priority entry (€50). Wir haben uns kurz vor unserer Rundreise durch den Norden Portugals für eine Stadtführung mit Rui entschieden. Um es gleich zu sagen, es war großartig!! Von Rui haben wir soviel über die Stadt Porto und über das Leben in und um Porto erfahren. Dabei ging Rui sehr gerne auf unsere Fragen ein. Rui ist sehr offen und fast wie ein alter Freund in Porto, der uns herum führt. Es ist eben eine sehr individuelle Tour und keine fest gefügte Stadttour. Das Beste aber war der Besuch einer Weinhandlung, in der er nur kurz ein "Geschenk für einen Freund" kaufen wollte. Wieder auf der Straße hat er mir dann die Flasche überreicht mit den besten Wünschen zum Vatertag von unserer Tochter!! Das hatte sie einen Tag vorher mit ihm besprochen. Es war eine absolut gelungene Überraschung. Und das Rui diese Überraschung mitgemacht hat, spricht für sich. Er nimmt seine Aufgabe mit großer Begeisterung für Porto aber eben auch für seine Gäste wahr. Seine Führung war in mehreren Zirkeln um den Ausgangspunkt aufgebaut, um verschiedene Aspekte der Innenstadt kennenzulernen. Eben nicht das Abhaken der Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten. Das kann man alleine mit Karte und Reiseführer, ob analog oder digital sehr gut selber tun. Aber die Informationen z.B. zu Plänen der Umgestaltung durch die Stadtverwaltung und Investoren oder auch zu Miet- und Wohnrecht bekommt man auf diese Weise natürlich aus erster Hand. Alles in allem also eine absolut empfehlenswerte Möglichkeit, Porto zu erfahren und für uns ein perfekter Einstieg in unsere Rundreise.Toller Start unserer Portugalreise

We spent a lovely 2 hours with Rui exploring the old, established shops of Porto. He took us to shops we most likely would have walked right past. He also shared information about Porto's history and culture. When the tour was over, he sent a few links to places he thought we would like and didn't have time to visit during our tour. Our walking tour with Rui was perfect. He was kind and knowledgeable, adapted to the speed and questions of three generations, and showed us the sights but, most interestingly, the hidden treasures off the beaten path. If we had one complaint, it’d be that the tour was cut short. We would have happily carried on walking for three hours (or four or five!). This aside, however, we would do this tour a million times over if we were to want an introduction to Porto. It gave us the foundation we needed on our first day to then go explore the city on our own. Shortly after, Rui sent us messages with recommendations which we followed and did not regret. Nothing like a curious, engaging, welcoming local to get you love a place. Highly recommended. Brilliant intro to Porto
