The Firefly's Life Journey & Bali's Three Principles for Harmony in Bali - 9be6f319429bd7e7cb55b24b4b626a81

The Balinese communities live their life according to the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - The Three Principles for Harmony; whereby to achieve a well-balanced life, one must be living in harmony with the divine (spirituality), with other people (community), and with Nature (sustainability). These principles guide the Balinese daily karmic actions with one another.

Taro village, a traditional Balinese village, the home of Wayan and where Henzo created his nest, and where we both together have established our Fireflies conservation and Trees reforesting projects, is where we take you on this time travel journey to live a demonstration of the philosophy.

We understand the history of the social governing system, connect with the Balinese village's local community, then live their spirituality in a central temple, before we walk into the nature village / sacred forest lives, how a traditional authentic meal gets prepared, taste it too :), get insights on the scientific and life side of the fireflies importance within nature's eco-system, and plant our own name tree that contribute to the overall bio-diversity within our sought after 2-kms chemical freezone.

My evening here was one of the highlights of my time in Ubud. The experience broadly comprises a sharing of Bli Wayan and Novi’s efforts to study the fireflies, conservation works; a visit to their little research lab, a short walk around the site to their neighbours and fields; helping out in the kitchen to make dinner and witnessing the magical spectacle of the fireflies when it’s dark. I think what makes this experience so special is really hearing Wayan and Novi’s passion and being inspired by their sheer gumption in turning an idea into reality. They were really open in sharing their own personal experiences and there was so much heart they have poured into this singular effort. These are a bunch of a really earnest and sincere people trying to do their best. I’ve not seen fireflies before and it really is something special to see them glow in the lab and also some out on the rice fields. Just to manage expectations: most of the fireflies that we saw that night were in the lab in their containers. We did see some fireflies out in the rice fields but it was really just a small handful as it was raining earlier that day. The food was also really GOOD! My friend and I were hardly helpful in the kitchen so less of us cooking then us just admiring Tati (hope I got her name right) at work and chatting with her and the team. The food tasted like home cooked food which was really nice and inviting. Food was cooked in the traditional Balinese style. It was truly quite a spread. All in all - highly recommended! They have only just started offering this experience to tourists for a few months. So don’t come here expecting a polished and professional tour but I don’t think that is also their intent. Come for the fireflies, stay for the people. One of the highlights of my time in Ubud

My experience with Bali Trek was nothing short of magical. We embarked on a river float adventure with a diverse group of international travelers, and it was an absolute delight. The river float was a zen-like experience that allowed us to truly connect with nature. As the gentle current guided us along, it was like being in a state of effortless surrender, a perfect blend of tranquility and exhilaration. During the river floating experience, Krishna and Henzo are attentive, and ensured that our safety was a top priority. We ended the trip with an amazing local lunch cooked by Krishna’s family. The first time I visited Indonesia I thought local food was not for me, but this time the lunch changed my mind! This was more than just a trek; it was an immersive experience that brought us closer to Bali’s natural beauty and to each other.More than just a trek, it was an immersive experience

Wayan, his family and dedicated team of researchers gave us an excellent insight into fireflies in Taro, including sound science, and aspects of spirituality, people-nature connection and and history. The home, food, people and science were all amazing to experience. The evening was a well thought out but concise event that showcased everything they stood for - a small group of people that care for their land, and want to share their experience with all who are interested. The best part were the two researchers from the local university who took the time to explain the life cycle of fireflies, walked us through their excellent laboratory set up, answered all the questions we bombarded them with with accuracy, thought and complete knowledge. As a scientist myself, I came away feeling very educated and with a thorough understanding of what they are aiming to achieve here. The work they do here has immense potential, laying the groundwork for tropical firefly research and conservation globally. At the end of the day we got to see the fireflies twinkling in their lab and in the field nearby, and that was so magical to witness. Wayan is earnest, genuine, thoughtful and articulate. He took us on a walk through the village explaining uses of native plants that was extremely interesting to learn. Understanding his reasons behind beginning the firefly initiative are simple but so important. Hopefully, him or more people like him are able to increase small scale conservation efforts across Bali, Indonesia and further. Apart from the fireflies, all the other small things their family does is also something that should be encouraged to continue, such as raising native bees, extracting their own coconut oil/milk, and their own palm sugar. Lastly, we loved the food in Indonesia already but the food prepared with love and care by Wayan's sister topped our list. It was healthy, fulfilling and delicious. We helped a bit, but she did most of it! They are also considerate of dietary needs and preferences. We love chilli, so they made a separate batch of sambal with lots of chilli just for us! The coconut milk/banana/palm sugar dessert was the highlight for us. We have so much more we could say about this entire experience but cannot fit in a little review. It was the best part of our visit to Bali. This place and project is truly a labour of love and care, and if you get a chance to go see this place, we would highly recommend it.Family Feeling

I was visiting Krishna and Santi after a ceremony at the Water Temple nearby. They are lovely and spending time with them is great fun. Krishna and I went floating in a river close to the rice patties at dawn which runs directly through the jungle and is an absolute secret spot since Krishna knows the whereabouts from his childhood. It was great fun and I can highly recommend to everyone who wants to either experience an authentic balinese cooking session with Yanti or some crazy adventure exploring spots unknown to Google Maps with Krishna. I wish all blessings to Yanti, Krishna and their two sons! Hope to be back again soon!Floating down the river at dawn

More about me

Passionate about ancient philosophies and nature, love to tell stories about how the mix between local communities' culture, raw nature, and spirituality result in an art that is worth traveling for.

I co-host every single experience with a local indigenous guide whereby they share their local wisdom as I translate through the eye of a foreigner who lived in 8 different countries across 3 continents, how this wisdom applies to our daily lives.

Spent the last 5 years studying the ancient Balinese philosophy and traditions, then put them side by side other ancient philosophies such as the Ancient Egyptian, the Nepalese Buddhism, and Hinduism, to give a depth of understanding of how the mix between the raw nature of the land, and the indigenous wisdom of the communities result in a story that is very enriching to be told.
