What you can expect
To Experience the cleanest subway/ tube in the world, trying the transportation of the Taipei MRT system is one of the top 10 things you must to do.
First we meet at Taipei city hall MRT station exit 2 ,after a quick tour at the bus station culture then we right head to the train station by MRT.
At Nangang station, we will have TRA ( Taiwan Railway Administration), HSR (High-Speed Railroad) and Taipei MRT ( Mass Rapid Transit) all in one station.
TRA will take us to the old town that used to be the main gate for traders from the north port (Keelung) and the south rice field (Yilan) for their daily trades.
The train will take us there in minutes(certain train only) You will see the busy streets of the gold mine old town, how the local market looks like and people ride their scooters to do the food shopping. The street will lead us to the bus station where also has the temple that people go every day for exchanging information and praying for happiness. After hopping into the bus, we may appreciate the beautiful mountain views through the windows of the bus on the winding road. The higher the bus goes up, the smaller the houses in gold mine town become. How could we miss the gold mine pit to imagine what a minor's life looked like in the past? The old-time mine railway will lead us to find the entrance of mine pit. We will enter the pit and we may see the track and the route where the minors and the POW used to work. After 200 meters long route we will arrive at the exit of the pit, the mountain and ocean view will be just right in front of you. We may have a short break, enjoy the view with a bowl of sweet soup, hand-made dessert by the water from the mountain. The Crown Prince Chalet is not far away. It was built for Japanese royalty during the time Taiwan was ruled by Japan. Traditional Japanese house and garden will bring you back to the Japan colonial period. After the Crown Prince Chalet, we will hit the winding road again by walking, we will see the site of POW (Prisoner of War) camp-Kinkaseki after 10 minutes walk.
There is an Honor Roll which consists of the names of all the men who died while POWs residents in camps of Taiwan during World War. It lists them alphabetically by name with their rank at that time and the regiment/unit which they served. The memorial stone and its history will bring us back to world war II.
We will be heading back to Gold town old street, tasting the local food.

We started our trip to Taiwan with Agnes the evening we arrived. It was perfect! First a pepper bun at Rahoe Night Market and beautiful Ciyou Temple followed by cycling through the streets. Agnes is a beautiful soul. We had such a wonderful time with her, and truly felt we were experiencing a slice of local life. Given the current state of world affairs, she answered our questions about Taiwanese politics and history with honesty and empathy. Terrible experience as our guide Agnes did not show up at the meeting point at the designated time from our confirmation. We messaged her with no response and sent an email to With Locals who did respond with a less than sincere standard apology. We were only in Taipei for one night and were to meet her at 5pm for a night tour.
We were then left stranded and had to quickly scramble to figure out things on our own. A terrible experience!
First we had booked another daytime tour with Daphne and within an hour received a cancellation saying the host was no longer available. From our experience it seems With Locals needs to improve their host scheduling, booking and confirmation processes.
I would NOT recommend this platform. I am still waiting on the refund for both the cancelled tour and no show guide tour.Terrible - Guide Agnes No showed For Tour!

Agnes was amazing! Not only did she navigate us through various types of food markets but she tied the food to Taiwan and regional history. She was exceptionally prepared with utensils for each of us and bag full of tricks (napkins, hand sanitizer, etc.). Most important, she tailored her food choices to our tastes. Additionally she redirected the tour based on lines so we could maximize our time. We have been on several food tours and this was by far one of the best. Her generosity and positive spirit made for a perfect day. Her English was exceptional. Time flew by and she provided a ton of recommendations for us to try during the rest of our time in Taiwan. We had a wonderful time with Agnes on our local tasting tour. Where we thought we would only taste food on a local market, turned out to be a tour of some hidden gems in Taipei. After asking us if we’re comfortable with cycling and hiking we went and had a magnificent view on Taipei 101 without the crowds. And we did taste amazing food as well! Her knowledge about Taiwan is vast and she is a very nice person! She also gave us heaps of recommendations and was always willing to help us if we needed any.Tasting and exploring on foot and bike

At 5pm the tour started and Agnes took us to a lot of different street food stands and petit restaurants and we got know the history behind.
Agnes didn’t only let us taste lots of different flavors but also showed us around the city and told lots about Taiwanese history, culture and daily life.

tldr; amazing food tour not only of the night markets but all kinds of local cuisine with a very knowledgeable and super friendly guide (Agnes)!
Our group loved the food tour! We were able to try a ton of different foods across multiple night markets and local restaurants. While portions at each stop seemed small, Agnes was always happy to buy more when she saw us really enjoying a dish and we were absolutely stuffed by the end of the tour. We actually felt kinda bad because we could barely eat any of the dessert we bought at our last stop.
Agnes herself is an excellent guide that we would highly recommend. She puts a lot of thought and care into the tour and is willing to mix things up to suit the needs of the group. She’s also very friendly and we really enjoyed learning more about Taiwanese culture and history from her!
While it’s definitely possible to visit the night markets yourself, we would recommend this tour as a much more entertaining and educational way to do it! Great way to experience the night markets!

We started our 4 day stay in Taipei with Agnes on a 'Highlights and Hidden Gems' tour.
