Vicenza Getaway: discover the Unesco Heritage Palladian Gem in Verona - 2f0468f2e7626801853225d9c4f4a0ec

Vicenza is an exceptional artistic creation considering the numerous architectural contributions made by Andrea Palladio, all of which are integrated into a historical context that gives the city its overall character. Making a journey to Vicenza means establishing contact with the history of architecture. Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-classicism scenes decorate the infinite perspectives of the so-called "theatre-city".

This tour is offered from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm during weekdays and anytime during the weekend according to availability.

You can reach Vicenza by regional train from Verona Porta Nuova Train Station: trains run every hour from 6 am to 10 pm. The journey takes only 35 minutes and the ticket fare is 6,35€ per person.

Please reach out to arrange customized times/requests and to verify the availability.

This is the plan

Check out the plan below to see what you'll get up to with your local host. Feel free to personalize this offer with Tullia.

  1. Meeting point

Meet at Toto' Bistrot - Verona to start your journey

  2. Itinerary

This is what our experience could look like, but it’s not set in stone! Once you book, you can chat directly with your host to make small tweaks to suit your preferences.

  3. Giardini Salvi and Loggia Valmarana

We start our walking tour from the Vicenza train station heading towards Giardini Salvi and its Loggia (Salvi's Gardens). This loggia with 6 columns of the Doric order, topped by a triangular pediment, inside the Giardini Salvi (Salvi gardens), was built following a design which is very close to Palladio’s style, if not made by the architect himself. UNESCO decided to ascribe it to Palladio anyway in 1994.
  4. Piazza Castello and its Palaces

This Piazza is dominated by the Palazzo Piovini (1656-58) and the unfinished Palazzo Porto, by Vincenzo Scamozzi to a design by Palladio (late 16th century), characterised by the three tall columns on the front. Here we begin by discovering the Roman origins of the city to arrive at its connection with Andrea Palladio, and conclude with the story of one of its most illustrious citizens, the 19th-century writer Antonio Fogazzaro.
  5. Corso Palladio & Basilica Palladiana

Strolling down the main street, Corso palladio, we reach the magnificent Basilia: symbol and iconic building of Vicenza, as well as Unesco World Heritage site, the Basilica Palladiana stands out on the south side of Piazza dei Signori, the heart of the city. Particularly beautiful are the roof in form of a huge upturned-boat and the two sets of loggias, designed by Palladio in 1546. Goethe was also spellbound by the Basilica - “You cannot describe the feeling that makes the Basilica of Palladio...”- he wrote.
  6. Palazzo Chiericati

This design is new for Palladio’s vision: a town palace and a suburban villa at the same time. It has been completed in mid-seventeenth century upon the former river harbour of the town. Since 1855 it has been seat of the Vicenza Town Museum.
  7. Olympic Theatre: Vicenza's gem

This theatre is the absolute peak of the creativity of Andrea Palladio; opened on 3 March 1585, it is the oldest roofed theatre in the world. In 1555 a group of nobles and artists founded the ‘’Olympic Academy”. Palladio was an academic himself and had proposed as early as 1579 to build a permanent theatre to stage the shows.
  8. Querini's Park: a british corner in Vicenza

For a long time, the park was a private property, owned by the Capra family, a noble family from Vicenza, and it was used mostly for farming until the beginning of the 19th century. Then, Antonio Capra decided to expand the property and rearrange the area of the private garden by demolishing part of the ex-nunnery of the Clarissa order, close to the Araceli Church. Around the 1820s, the appearance of the park was similar to the one it has today, due to the making of the long boulevard and the small, circle hill with a small temple-like structure surrounded by a pond.
  9. Aperitif on the Basilica's Rooftop (when possible)

The best way to end our tour is with a refreshing drink. The terrace offers a wonderful viewpoint over the city and the surrounding hills. The evening opening has already made it one of the most attractive summer destinations where one can spend a few hours in a very special atmosphere. Just go up, sit down, lose yourself in the magic of the view, let the setting sun warm you up and refresh you with a perfectly crafted drink. - Terrace is open from 5 pm onwards during mid- spring and summer.

I booked this tour as a present for my parents. Tullia contacted us a week or two before the tour telling us she couldn't make it on the agreed date, which was a dissapointment at first of course. But she then did everything she could to help us find a replacement and managed to get Izabela to guide the tour instead. Izabela was great. My parents were very happy with her expertise and told me her english was very good. She took good care of them and made sure to show them things they were interested in. This of course means that I can't review how a tour with Tullia would have been, but I appreciate that she took the time to find a replacement instead of just cancelling. Thank you very much, both Tullia and Izabela! <3My parents enjoyed the Tour very much!

What to say about Tullia...she's the best host for your discovering tour of Verona! Our experience was 100% personalized, due to the fact that my little daughter couldn't walk for so long: she was so helpful that modified the tour for us making sure we had everything. She told us about the old legends and stories in a way that amazed us, she created the right atmosphere and also delighted us with a little gift. The landscape and corners that she showed us were so beautiful, we're sure that following the standard guides we wouldn't have seen them. Pick her as your perfect host, you won't be disappointed!Pick her as your perfect host, you won't be disappointed!

Tullia guided my husband and me in this interesting and interactive tour, she showed us all the hidden corners and told us lots of legends that make us step back in times. The fact that she lives in Verona is a wonderful added value, the explained us also everyday things and curiosities. The walk until Castel San Pietro was breathtaking, and she was really nice with us. We highly recommend her for your Verona tour in order to discover the real city. She also welcomed us with a little gift, so lovely! We highly recommend her!
