Theresa met me at my hotel & we set off to see the sights & buildings I had expressed an interest in. Theresa was good company and knowledgeable. During her guided walk she gave a concise account of the history - I complemented her on her ability to make her talk relevant & to the point. She knew that I had wanted to use her tour as a familiarising myself with Porto walk. She achieved her aim as today I set off myself to explore & as a result of her guided walk yesterday I found my way around At the end of our walk along the river She kindly walked me to The Funicular so that I could make my way back to my hotel without having to walk uphill. Joao erkundigte sich initial nach unseren Wünschen und komponierte dann eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Tour zu Fuss durch das moderne und historische Porto. Abseits der üblichen Touristenpfade unterwegs, zeigte er uns von Street-Art über historische Juwelen hin zu politisch markanten Bauwerken die Vielfalt von Porto. Carlos exceeded our expectations for the city walking tour. We went to every place on my list and he shared so many insights and fun facts with a sense of humor: Sao Bento train station, Porto cathedral, the Tile Bank, best Pastel da nata bakery, McDonalds inside an original beautiful old building, best high view across the river and many many more. We had a limited time in Porto, so we booked a 4-hour walking tour of the city with Carlos. We felt like singing, even though it was a rainy day. Carlos met us right on time in the Square and off we went to explore the two cathedrals with the skinny monk's quarters squished in between, the cathedral covered in gold inside, the dim and vibrant tiled walls, many historically significant murals (loved the Steak 'n Shake peacock!), the ancient town walls, the prison, the glass "turrets" to let light into buildings, the early fire alarm system, so many beautiful cobblestone streets, the market, the "cat" wall mural, train station tiles, even the ornate McDonald's. We ended up at the Fabrica de Nata for a yummy pasteis treat! We really felt that we understood so much more about the history and character of Porto and its people after our time with Carlos. We felt confident to explore on our own, walk aross the bridge, find the tram and go walk the river front before tasting wine. Carlos was the best we ever could have hoped for. She showed us the area of the Igreja do Carmo, where she grew up, where she studied and where she knows all local people. She showed us local shops and restaurants we never would have noticed.
