What you can expect

Your Own Holland. Tour of Rotterdam's Street Art. From Vandals to Picasso in Rotterdam - 310096a4fe8ee078b95848d3ebf2c5ce

Rotterdam is always striving for a brighter future! Proof of this are the skyscrapers, the epitome of scientific thought, and the phenomenal leap which the city has made in the past 70 years.

But apart from large-scale projects, Rotterdam has a hidden side that is equally interesting: Rotterdam's street art which has a life of its own. But if you peek under the curtain, you'll realize how much more there is to see.

Rotterdam is full of street art. From classic graffiti to street installations, from huge murals to tiny mosaics, Rotterdam has it all. Not only is there room for faceless hooligans, but also "the great and terrible" Picasso. Street art is a terrific storyteller, and it will present us with the most amazing, touching, and fascinating stories that no one else knows about. We invite you to immerse yourself in this fascinating world!

We'll start our journey at the train station. From there, we will turn to a real hip-hop neighbourhood where we will meet local creators and the Brazilian masters of the genre. We'll even be able to climb on one of the artworks (a photo session is a must!). We will walk around the outdoor art museum and pay a visit to Chinatown. We will gather our diverse crew and pay a visit to a real Giant from Rotterdam and measure our height with him. We'll walk down the city's oldest shopping street with its Art Nouveau facades. We'll visit an island of concrete with skaters and meet with their stone guard. Finally, we'll stroll down the oldest bar street, which is scattered with street art, art galleries and filled with amazing tales that describe the city better than any history book. We'll find out how to profess love with spray paint cans and why a certain Melly hates her job. We will discuss how street art fits into Rotterdam's urban landscape and how locals interact with it. And, of course, we'll have a coffee or a beer somewhere special, and we will suggest many other places you can visit after the tour (both in the afternoon and in the evening).

This is the plan

Check out the plan below to see what you'll get up to with your local host. Feel free to personalize this offer with Daniel.

  1. Meeting point

Meet at Starbucks - Rotterdam to start your journey

  2. Itinerary

This is what our experience could look like, but it’s not set in stone! Once you book, you can chat directly with your host to make small tweaks to suit your preferences.

  3. Discover the character of Rotterdammers through street art

Rotterdam street art is a great tool to discover the character of Rotterdammers and what they are all about. And this lovely piece by Joren Joshua does an excellent job. While Rotterdam is an extremely open-minded and welcoming city its roots lie in its port. And sea-port is not a place for rookies. Joren Joshua combines the lightheartedness of the contemporary city with its roots and no-nonsense mentality
  4. Zebra by Herman Lamers

Don’t look up unless you do not want to notice a real zebra sitting in the nest. You heard me right. Herman Lamers is a contemporary artist that likes playful and interactive work in public. Where did this zebra come from? Why is it in the nest? Come and find out!
  5. Santa Claus aka “The Buttplug Gnome” by Paul McCarthy

Probably the most famous statue in Rotterdam and definitely the one to cause the most giggles and shy smiles. A symbol of the holiday's spirit holding an obviously phallic object in his hand (also known as a Christmas tree) to this day provokes a lot of debates and has a long history in Rotterdam. A must-see object- zero doubt.
  6. Will You Marry Me? by Tymon de Laat

Street art evokes and expresses many emotions. Sometimes it can do it literally. Will You Marry Me? Is both a very strong piece of art and the most creative marriage proposal in Rotterdam. Tymon de Laat managed to weave in a lot of references to his (spoiler alert) wife, however, to a regular passing by it is yet another fantastic work by the master.
  7. Make it yours

Want to tweak the itinerary? Book directly & chat afterwards with your host to adjust highlights, skip stops, or make small changes to fit your preferences.
