Best Activities in Brussels

Yes, Brussels has the reputation of being a boring city, full with European Union bureaucracy. But nope, this reputation doesn’t add up! There are lots of fun activities in Brussels. Consider the following five when you visit Belgium’s metropole!

  • Enjoy a City Walk in Brussels

Among all of our suggested Brussels activities, this should definitely be on your bucket list. Brussels is such an amazing city, it would be a shame if you didn’t explore it thoroughly. The best way to discover its many hidden gems, and the stories behind them, is to take a city tour by a local guide. He’ll tell you all about Brussels’ history – the good and the bad!

Walk onto the Grand Place, Place Sainte-Catherine, and past Manneken Pis. Have a stroll down the Louise Avenue, past the comic book murals, up to the Mont des Arts and into the Parc de Bruxelles. So much to see, so much to do!

  • Take a Cooking Class with a Brussels Local

Taking a cooking class is among the coolest, most instructive activities in Brussels. Immerse yourself in preparing a typical Belgian meal, like vol-au-vent, chicory, Brussels sprouts, moules-frites, Belgian endives, waterzooi, steak-frites, stoemp, paling in’t groen or carbonade flamande.

Sounds yummy? It is. The best cooking classes are offered at a local’s home! Enjoy the warm hospitality of a Brussels local while chatting away about Belgian food, culture, history or whatever you guys feel like talking about. This is one of the coolest Brussels activities out there!

  • Go On a Chocolate Tasting

Yes, we’re on about food, again. Eating is just a fun way to get to know a country’s culture. And chocolate is a very big deal in Belgium! Of course, you shouldn’t stuff yourself with all of the chocolate that comes your way. That wouldn’t be very healthy, especially not in Brussels where there’s chocolate everywhere you look.

That’s why you should go on a chocolate tasting by one of our local guides! He’ll take you to the best chocolate boutiques. He’ll also tell you how you should taste chocolate. It’s not that easy, you know. Like wine tasting, chocolate tasting is an actual profession.

  • Play one of Brussels’ Room Escape Games

Ever heard of Escape Rooms? It’s a new kind of game, available in some big cities in Europe, North America and Asia. Brussels is one of them. You and your mates will be locked in a room. The goal is to puzzle your way out of the room in 60 minutes! It’s a bit like the movie Saw, but then nobody gets killed, or hurt, normally!

Brussels has several escape rooms you can go to, like Escape Hunt on Rue de Livourne, Quarantine at Rue Saint-Jean and Enygma at Place de l’Albertine. Ask your local guide which one you’d like best!

  • Go on a pub crawl

Brussels has a thriving nightlife. Almost every night, there are plenty things to do, especially in the weekends! Thus, going on a pub crawl is one of the top Brussels activities. For one, you get to taste the famous Belgian beer. And secondly, due to the many evening and night activities in Brussels, you won’t get bored for a second!

It’s highly recommended you go on a pub crawl with your local host, as he’ll not only advice you on which beers to drink – believe us, there’s plenty of choice! he’ll also take you to the coolest, hippest, trendiest bars around! Santé, cheers, schol!

An inspiring experience

We had an absolutely wonderful time exploring Brussels and cooking tasty food with Shanthuru. We learnt a lot of different ways to prepare and appreciate food. We are incredibly grateful for this, the trip to the organic market and a tour of the local area made for great context, and the explanations were really helpful. We will be sure to practice what we learnt.

Awesome time!

We had an amazing time with Shanthuru. It was a different format that what he usually offers, as my friend and I are based in Brussels. We asked him whether he could offer a lunch + yoga session (it was a gift for a friend), instead of the touristic tour - and he happily accepted. We spend some very nice hours, doing yoga, cooking and eating together. Shanthuru is a very good host/guide. I can totally recommend him to everyone who wants to spend some nice time with a knowledgeable host, and eat amazing food!

About local
Just wonderful

Before I get started let me add some context: I'm a 6'4, 250lb African American Vegan. With minimal expectations of finding something that would really relate to me in this city I was punched in the face with a blessing. Something about Shanthuru's withlocals page grabbed me. Shanthuru is a well cultured, well-spoken(in many languages), genius of a young open mind. I can promise you without all of the facts and knowledge (believe me there is a lot) that Shanthuru shared throughout this personalized tour this city would have been good but he made it great! To explore a city with a local who is super educated on the city, the people and politics is unique. I don't get a dime for writing this review so do yourself a favor if you are traveling to this diverse city and look up Shanthuru, I can almost guarantee you will return from your trip and want to do exactly as I'm doing and speak highly of someone who's passion for the city and people is visible on his sleeve pretty much. Thank you for this experience. Jay & Nadja

About local
Brussels.. Have it your way???

To add some context I would like to add I’m a 6’4 250lbs African American Vegan. When searching the internet for things to do in Brussels I came across Shanthuru’s page. Weirdly enough, after reading his background I had a gut feeling this would be a hidden gem addition to our tour. As mentioned before I’m 250 pounds so me and my gut have a good relationship. I don’t have time for a lovey dovey rendition on how Shanthuru changed my life but if you are an open minded person who loves a great mind and to be around people who really are good people who care about their city and our world, this is the tour for you. The parallel of Brussels being such a diverse city and the diversity of Shanthuru’s knowledge just fit. Do yourself a favor and try this out, if you are disappointed check the mirror.
