The Berlin Wall: A symbol of freedom and hope
The Berlin Wall was a physical barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Construction of the wall began on August 13, 1961. The wall cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany, including East Berlin. The wall was built to stop the large number of East Germans who had been fleeing to West Germany. It also stopped the flow of Western money and ideas into East Germany. The wall became a symbol of the Cold War and the division of Europe. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was opened and people from East and West Berlin were able to cross freely for the first time in 28 years.
