31 Things To Do For Couples in Berlin

Top 5 things to do in December in Berlin

  • Enjoy the Magic of Gendarmenmarkt

Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt has over 600,000 people pass through, and if you want things to do in Berlin in December then this market should be on your list. It’s a beautiful square in central Berlin bordered by two majestic churches: one French and the other German. When combined with the snow, lights and decorations it has a fairyland quality.

The crafts and stalls at Gendarmenmarkt are full of local findings and you can find: calendars, ornaments, wooden toys, food and paper lights, plus it’s the atmosphere you’re coming here to enjoy. Buy a hot drink, walk around, and let fate take you where it will.

  • Go Ice Skating at the Berliner Weihnachtszeit

In front of the Roten Rathaus, you’ll find a Christmas market called Berliner Weihnachtszeit. This one should be pretty easy to spot but your local guide will know exactly where it is — all you have to do is look out for the giant Ferris wheel.

This is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Berlin and stalls tend to be decorated in early 1900s style, which gives the market a very antique look. The market also boasts an ice-skating rink that has a surface of 600 square meters. This Christmas market has a lot to offer young and old, and should be on every visitors list of things to do in Berlin in December.

  • Experience a German Meal with a Local

If you’re looking for things to do in December in Berlin, then why not enjoy a meal cooked by a local? There are plenty of festive food ingredients available in the stores in this time, and a local host can tailor a meal to suit your needs.

Talk about the local culture too; although German and Anglo-Saxon holiday traditions are pretty similar, there are some noteworthy differences. There’s a traditional Christmas dinner served on the evening of the 24th, and another for lunch on the 25th. You might enjoy roast duck, but also some red cabbage and dumplings. Experience Christmas though Berlin’s food.

  • Join the Monthly Refugees’ Dinner

December is always a time to give, even though that should be every day but when you are close to the holidays, why not share your time with those in need? In Berlin, your local host organizes every month a dinner specifically targeted to help refugees.

Indulge in a delicious Middle Eastern dinner cooked by refugees. At the table, get to hear their powerful stories and learn more about this movement happening throughout Europe. Create new friends while also helping them since all the money goes towards them and their families. A good deed is always rewarded and in December it gives you extra points.

A perfect tour for a quick stop in Berlin

We were in Berlin for less than 24 hours for a flight back to the US and booked a bike tour with Seth. He did an incredible job guiding us through the city to see many of the highlights in a short period of time. He shared the history of Berlin and many of the fascinating and impactful events that have occurred there in a way that was accessible and contextual way. We had a great time and will reach out again when we have a longer visit to the area. Thanks Seth!
