Externsteine: A Window into the Past

The Externsteine are a rock formation in the Teutoburg Forest near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The formation consists of five tall, narrow sandstone columns (the tallest is 40.5 metres (133 ft) high), which are set in a circle with a diameter of about 60 metres (200 ft). The columns are of different heights and widths, and are connected at the top by a ring of stone. The Externsteine were formed during the Lower Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. The sandstone was deposited as sediment in the sea, and over time it was compressed and cemented into rock. The Externsteine were exposed when the overlying rocks were eroded away. The Externsteine have been a place of human activity for thousands of years. They were first settled in the Neolithic period, and have been used as a place of worship by the Germanic peoples since the Iron Age. The Externsteine were a centre of pagan worship until Christian missionaries converted the local people in the 8th century. The Externsteine were used as a place of worship until the 16th century, when the local people were forcibly converted to Christianity by the Protestant reformer, Martin Luther. The Externsteine are a popular tourist destination, and are visited by around 500,000 people each year.

Vanessa was amazing!

We loved our tour with Vanessa. Her passion for Munich stood out from the very beginning as did her joy in sharing her city with us. We learned a ton about the city and had so much fun along the way. We would definitely book with her again.

Outstanding introduction to Munich

We had an outstanding introduction to Munich thanks to Marjut. She took us through the heart of the city. She shared local folklore along with history while sharing her recommendations on more things to do, places to see, and food to enjoy. She even gave us a sampling of German beers in the beer garden at Viktualienmarkt. We very much enjoyed our time with Marjut!
