The Panathenaic Stadium was built in 329 BC and is located in Athens, Greece. It is the only stadium in the world made entirely of marble. The stadium was originally built to host the Panathenaic Games, which were held every four years to honor the goddess Athena. The games were abolished in the 4th century AD, but the stadium continued to be used for a variety of events, including gladiator fights, chariot races, and public executions. In 1869, the stadium was excavated and restored to its original form. It is now used for a variety of sporting events, including football and track and field.
Guide was fantastic, took us to all the sites and provided lots of information. Can recommend this experience.
Eleni was very polite, well mannered, met us on time! Extremely knowlegable she took us through all the sites, telling us not only the historical part but also the myths and stories behind the scene. I would definetely reccomend Eleni for this experience and any other! Thank you
Eleni did a great job of taking us near many of the monument sites while giving us a ton of background info of the history and current status's of what we were seeing. She gave us a view of the area that you couldn't get without a local's help. We also got to experience a Sunday Market area and Flea Market area that the locals spend their Sunday day off enjoying. A perfect way to get to know the area, with a great local expert.
Georgos, our guide, ‘gave’ us three things: 1. His very pleasant authentic Greek personality, including storytelling and his good laugh. 2. His knowledge about the places and things we’ve seen, and thereby the new insights we got in just a fee ours. 3. His carefulness and flexibility to make us feel safe and acknowledged in what we liked to see. So, Georgos, you are a great host. Thank you for a wonderful morning.
