If you’re reading this review to decide on Stavros’ tour, stop reading and book it! Not only is Stavros a friendly and thoughtful guide, but his knowledge of queer Greece - both Ancient and modern - is remarkable and timely. The sights we saw came second to the knowledge we gained from Stavros as we discussed the prevalence of homosexuality in Ancient Greece, the role of religion in modern queer rights, and the many places queer people convene to find community - both in person and online. By the end of the evening, we felt as if we got to be part of Athens’ queer community for a night. We booked this tour to celebrate my birthday, and Stavros made me feel like I was celebrating with friends. I’m very grateful to the new friend I’ve made in Athens, and will be booking this tour again when I inevitably return!
Stavros is easy to reach and coordinate with. All went very smoothly in booking and meeting. Stavros was a great guide and host. He had many interesting stories and was happy to answer lots of questions about the tour, the history of homosexuality in Greek history, and modern gay life in Greece. Some of the information was speculative based on the secrecy of gay relationships, and the time period in which the people lived, but I believe Stavros had researched his tour well. The walk was around some lovely parts of Athens. We started w history and ended in a vibrant area at a gay bar/restaurant. By the end of they tour Stavros felt like a friend. I did have the benefit of being alone w Stavros so we were able to speak easily without others on the tour. A small group of friends would probably have a similar experience. Well worth the time and cost.
My husband and I toured with Stavros a Thursday evening. Stavros was always very responsive about times and meeting place before the tour. After he met us, we did a walking tour in the vicinity of the Hellenic Parliament where he shared a lot of knowledge about being gay in Athens past and present, and the importance of the tour locations in that history. Stavros was very personable and we enjoyed our time with him. We left feeling we understood Athens and the community there a lot better than when we came.
I recently had the pleasure of joining Stavros’ private walking tour of Athens, titled “Athens LGBTQ+ Culture & Hangout Spots,” and I can confidently say it was one of the most magical experiences I’ve had in Greece so far! From the moment the tour began, it was clear that Stavros is not just a guide but a true connoisseur of Athens’ rich history and vibrant culture. We embarked on this three-hour journey during a breathtaking sunset, which added an enchanting backdrop to the entire experience. The way the city lit up in golden hues was absolutely beautiful! Stavros’ knowledge about culture and history in Athens was both informative and engaging. He shared fascinating stories, anecdotes, and insights that brought the city to life in a way that was truly unique. It felt less like a traditional tour and more like hanging out with a knowledgeable friend who wanted to show me the best of Athens. The spots we visited were not only interesting but also beautifully integrated into the fabric of the city. Each location had its own charm and significance, making the entire tour feel like a personal exploration of Athens’ heart and soul. This tour was fun, informative, and filled with incredible sights and stories. Stavros created an atmosphere of warmth and inclusivity, making this experience a memorable one. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone looking to discover the vibrant culture of Athens in a unique and captivating way! Thank you, Stavros, for an unforgettable evening!
