Best Markets in Hong Kong

Apart from the dazzling department stores and malls, Hong Kong’s markets are a must-go if you want to shop like a local and experience Hong Kong’s culture. Check out the five best Hong Kong markets listed, and get ready to haggle for everything!

  • Ladies Market

The Ladies Market in Hong Kong on Tung Choi Street is the most famous open market, selling things from clothes, shoes, accessories, bags and more. Many stalls sell the same goods, so shop wise and search for the best price around, and most importantly, don’t forget to haggle for discounts!

What’s even better is that you can also taste local street food here like curry fish balls, Siu Mai, stinky tofu or egg waffle, a great choice if you just want some snacks to enjoy during shopping.

The market is just a short distance from Mong Kok MTR Exit D, and open from 12:30 pm to 11pm.

  • Temple Street Night Market

The Temple Stree Night Market sits in Yau Ma Tei and is one of the biggest and most beloved flea markets in Hong Kong. You can find various sorts of items here including accessories, clothes, watches, DVDs, antiques, tea ware or even sex toys and adult magazines.

Besides of shopping, you can also try fortune telling or live portrait painting. And if you are a music lover, there are even performers singing in traditional Cantonese opera or sometimes old-fashioned disco songs, so don’t be shy if you want to join in for a dance!

This market is close to Yau Ma Tei MTR Exit C, and opens from 2pm until midnight, but the best time to go is after 7pm when it is the liveliest.

  • Cat Street Antique Market

If you are looking for arts and crafts or antiques, you will fall in love with this cultural market in Hong Kong. It is a great place to search for some hidden gems and traditional treasures.

Located in the back alley of Upper Lascar Row, known as Cat Street, in a walking distance from Sheung Wan MTR Exit D2, the market opens everyday around 10am to 6pm. This market is full with antique dealers, art galleries and trinket shops. You can go for bargains in jade, silk products, embroideries and wooden handicraft items, or even shop for expensive and rare genuine antiques from the old dynasty.

  • Jade Market

The Jade Market is a marketplace for jade accessories and figurines. Jade is associated with good luck, health and plays a key role in Chinese culture, such that people in Hong Kong often give one to a newborn as a tradition to bring him/her luck.

Jade varies in color, from the most common green to yellow, brown and white, as well the price. The stall keepers will be more than happy to help you choose the best one for you based on your interest and budget, so you will unlikely leave empty handed! The market sits in Kowloon’s Yau Ma Tei district and opens from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

  • Chop Alley

Located in Sheung Wan, just a few steps from MTR exit A, and known as Business Card Market, this market is famous for its small printing shops and chop-makers. If you are looking for a unique souvenir that can’t be found anywhere else, these chops would be your best choice.

A chop is a personalized stamp, mostly carved in jade or stone, with the Chinese characters of your family name. The vendors are more than happy to carve in English, but we suggest the calligraphic effect will look best with Chinese characters. You will need at least 24 hours to get a chop made, so make sure you save some time for it!

A grear afternoon

What a great way to start our Hong Kong holiday, an afternoon walking, talking & checking out the local wet markets & street food. Emcee was a wonderful host, she tailored our tour to suit our group of 3, different interests & tastes very well catered for. We gained some local culture insights during our time, and the opportunity to ask lots of questions at the start of a stay is always useful. If you are interested in local spots to try, food in general & Hong Kong details, you will love a tour with Emcee.

Amazing Food Tour

Emcee provided an awesome food tour. She showed me a ton of great spots to try out different foods and constantly had great recommendations. She does a great job of packing in many locations during the time to give you more chances to try additional foods. You should come hungry as you will eat a ton of great food. Emcee also provides great locations to check out during your free time while traveling. Great host for a great tour. I would highly recommend doing a tour with Emcee.
