The Trastevere neighborhood is one of the most fascinating places of the capital, a succession of narrow streets with an ancient flavor and charming squares, allowing you to enjoy great views. Trastevere area is the place you need to visit if you love art and culture.

  • What is Trastevere neighborhood all about?

First, you should know that the name comes from the Latin - Trans Tiberim, meaning beyond the Tiber. The original core of the city has developed along the opposite bank of the river. The poorer social classes in Rome initially inhabited the Trastevere district. Today, things are a lot different and the neighborhood is wanted not only for its nightlife and locals but also because it contains monuments, churches and works of art of great value.

We recommend visiting the famous Basilica of Santa Maria and its square, with its mosaics and medieval frescoes. It's a real jewel. Outside in the middle of the square, one of the oldest fountains in Rome is located. Along Via della Paglia you'll meet another wonderful glimpse in Piazza Sant'Egidio. Home of the Museum of Rome in Trastevere dedicated to the folkloric aspects of the city.

The Church of Santa Maria della Scala in honor of the Virgin or San Calisto Piazza sits in Trastevere near clubs and restaurants. Sonnino square is where the Church of San Crisogono and the Church of Sant'Agata are located, nearby the charming Piazza Gioacchino Belli, dedicated to the Roman poet. Another important square dedicated to a poet is the famous Trilussa Square, overlooking the Lungotevere Raffaello Sanzio at the Ponte Sisto. Here you can meet students, bohemians, musicians and street performers enjoying the city at any time of day.

Find out about the beauty of Rome with Trastevere district and its narrow streets by exploring its precious corners! Taste the typical Roman cuisine and immerse yourself in the culture of the eternal city. Our itinerary begins in Piazza Trilussa, dedicated to Trilussa, the famous poet of Rome. Its staircase provides space to sit in the shade and stock up with fresh water.
Leave the square and cross Ponte Sisto for some amazing panoramic views and reach Via dei Pettinari. Turn left in Vicolo delle Grotte and continue up to the Palazzo Farnese. You can admire its charm and the beautiful fountain. Continuing on Via dei Farnesi, turn right to get to Campo dei Fiori and be enchanted by its infinite beauty. You can admire the statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, who passed away for not having denied his ideals, in defense of the truth.

Trastevere district is undoubtedly one of the most lively and characteristic areas of Rome. However, if you really want to know it, you have to live it at night! At night the neighborhood is transformed, to become the hub of youth nightlife. You can spend an evening of fun and good food from local restaurants, pizzerias, shops, stalls and small shops of all kinds. The major attractions are Piazza Trilussa and the bars nearby Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere area.

Trastevere district is also synonymous with good Roman cuisine. Carbonara, Gricia, Bucatini Amatriciana and many other unmissable delicacies. Some restaurants here have even become veritable symbols of the Roman world. Among the most famous is "Cencio – La Parolaccia" where it is a tradition to be insulted by the waiters. Yes, you read it right! In this place customers are mocked as soon as they cross the threshold of entry and between one delicacy and the other will act out real battles of insults! Not recommended for most thin-skinned. Arrange a visit with you local guide, even they might be surprised about the place.

Wonderful tour, esp Italy first timers!

I would recommend Francesca, specifically, if you want to do a food tour in Rome. It was especially helpful for us as first time visitors to Rome. Meeting spot was great, food variety worked really well for us, and it’s exactly what we needed as an introduction to local Roman and Italian food. Francesca‘s knowledge of food and her relationships at the market and different restaurants made the tour feel like it was a lot more than just showing us spots and dishes to order, but a great time learning about history, culture, and the nuances of local food. Conversation was great, she was so easy to be with for three hours, and she even gave us some incredible recommendations after the tour for other spots we could explore. Favorite stops were food tasting in the market, the most amazing pizza, and a spot with fresh suppli. Almost forgot the gelato! Now that I think about it, everything was pretty amazing! Francesca gets a 10 out of 10 from us!

A high level tour.

Francesca is a very communicative guide, and makes us feel confortabe from the beginning. We had a great time in Trastevere with her, and saw things we would never have noticed on our own. She has an academic background in art, which makes a lot of difference. I would recommend Francesca to a friend.

Brilliant tour of Trastevere

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Matteo. We did a fair bit of hill climbing but it was all so worth it for the incredible view of the city from up high and rewarded ourselves with incredible gelato on the way back down! He was great with our 7 yo and thankfully the promise of a sweet treat did the trick. Grazie Mille
