What is Trastevere neighborhood all about?
First, you should know that the name comes from the Latin - Trans Tiberim, meaning beyond the Tiber. The original core of the city has developed along the opposite bank of the river. The poorer social classes in Rome initially inhabited the Trastevere district. Today, things are a lot different and the neighborhood is wanted not only for its nightlife and locals but also because it contains monuments, churches and works of art of great value.
We recommend visiting the famous Basilica of Santa Maria and its square, with its mosaics and medieval frescoes. It's a real jewel. Outside in the middle of the square, one of the oldest fountains in Rome is located. Along Via della Paglia you'll meet another wonderful glimpse in Piazza Sant'Egidio. Home of the Museum of Rome in Trastevere dedicated to the folkloric aspects of the city.

Sonnino square is where the Church of San Crisogono and the Church of Sant'Agata are located, nearby the charming Piazza Gioacchino Belli, dedicated to the Roman poet. Another important square dedicated to a poet is the famous Trilussa Square, overlooking the Lungotevere Raffaello Sanzio at the Ponte Sisto. Here you can meet students, bohemians, musicians and street performers enjoying the city at any time of day.
