Piazza San Marco is one of the most iconic squares in the world, and is the main public space in Venice, Italy. It is situated between the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica, and is the only square in Venice that is not named after a saint. The square is over 100m long and 50m wide, and is paved with white marble. It is often crowded with tourists, who come to see the beautiful buildings and to watch the Venetian life go by. The two most notable buildings in the square are the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica. The Doge's Palace is a beautiful Gothic building that was the home of the Doge of Venice, the supreme ruler of the city. It is now a museum, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Venice. St Mark's Basilica is a stunning Byzantine building, and is one of the most important churches in Venice. It is said to contain the remains of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice.
We had a great time learning all about her hometown of Venice from Romy. She brought an excellent perspective to the tour about the history of Venice and modern life there. Romy spoke English very well and was easy for us to understand. She responded well to our questions and gave us tips for enjoying the rest of our time there. Prior communication was quick and efficient, too. We'd recommend Romy as a guide without hesitation!
We had a wonderful tour with Romy. She tailored the walk to our interests giving us an over of the influence of the Renaissance on Venetian art and architecture. Then, showed us many examples of each. She also gave us a helpful explanation of the significance and role of the state in Venice throughout its history. We will highly recommend Romy as a tour guide to all our friends considering a visit to Venice.
Our tour really was value for money. Romy's extensive knowledge of the history of Venice and the role of the Venetian Renaissance artists was so interesting. We visited numerous sites of interest and with our new found knowledge we were better able to plan the rest of our trip.
I found out about withlocals when we visited Florence last year and I’ll now book a tour whenever I go somewhere new. Rocco was a great guide - knowledgeable, engaging and clearly loves his home city. We learned so much about the history of the city and also lots of ideas of what we would enjoy seeing during the rest of our stay. I feel that we only scratched the surface of Rocco’s knowledge! A really good experience - thank you!
