Alfama is a historic quarter of Lisbon, Portugal. Its name comes from the Arabic word for "fountain" or "spring", and it is said to be the oldest district in Lisbon. Alfama is a typical Portuguese labyrinth of narrow streets and stairways, with an abundance of small restaurants and fado houses. The streets of Alfama are lined with small shops and stalls, selling everything from fresh fish to souvenirs. The quarter is also home to the Lisbon Cathedral, the Castle of St. George, and the National Pantheon.
We had an amazing evening with Andrè, who went above and beyond to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. He is so knowledgeable, kind, interesting, and fun! We learned a lot about Portuguese history and culture, all while enjoying delicious bites from one of Andre’s favorite local restaurants. We enjoyed traditional sausage cooked at the table, gorgeous olives and cheeses, breads, and other classic, regional delicacies. We drank local wine, loved dining on the beautiful patio and listening to traditional singing from fellow patrons, and generally felt wrapped in the joyful heart and soul of Portugal. Sharing an evening with André was one of the highlights of our entire trip. He accepted our last-minute booking, and upon learning I needed to eat gluten free (a tall order in Portugal), he went all the way across town to the one gluten-free bakery to ensure that I, too, could enjoy a traditional Portuguese dessert—a flaky pastry filled with custard. It was so thoughtful of him and emblematic of the type of care he puts into every guest’s experience. Please book your trip with André—he is an outstanding guide and we give him our highest recommendation!
My wife, a cousin, and I enjoyed the Jewish Heritage Lisbon Tour with Silvia. It was an excellent experience. Silvia is very knowledgeable and friendly, and we highly recommend taking any tour with her!
We had a wonderful time with David. He took us to several spots where the food and wine were excellent. He also shared his extensive knowledge of the city and history with us along the way, as well as a few "don't bother VS definitely check it out" tourist recommendations. He was also willing to tailor the tour to meet our dietary restrictions, which was very much appreciated. Definitely would recommend WithLocals and especially David to fellow travelers.
We (four of us) took a walking tour of “Jewish” Lisbon with Silvia. There isn’t much left to actually see of the history of Jews in Lisbon, what with forced conversions, the inquisition, wars and emigration, but that didn’t matter. Silvia made the history come alive. She was so knowledgeable and interesting. We ended the tour with the BEST pasteis de nata. I would definitely recommend any type of tour with Silvia.
