Best Activities in Ho Chi Minh City

Manicure and pedicure are everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City and are open late into the night. Some even serve you a glass of wine or offer you a massage. Are you more interested in a beautiful cruise? There's something for everyone in Saigon city.

  • Ben Thanh Market shopping

Do you want to buy food yourself or you are joining a local host for a home dinner? There's an activity in Saigon which you shouldn't miss. Anyways, Ben Thanh (Chợ Bến Thành) is easily recognizable by its clock tower at the main entrance. At District 1's Ben Thanh market there's nothing you can't buy. It is the most famous market of Saigon and a great activity to get the best price for the veggies you have in mind.

Visit the part with non-touristic items to get a feel of how locals do their shopping. You will find a lot of bargaining, so get ready to slide in the bidding battles. Make sure that you stay on top of the game with exact quantities, prices and exchange rates that can reduce your change. If you don't prefer to bargain, there are shops on the north side with prices listed, but less fun included.

  • Relax with locals at 23rd September Park

Just across the Ben Thanh Market, a local park in the centre of Saigon fills up with locals before sunset. You can join in with your private guide at a game of badminton, kicking a shuttlecock or aerobics with music. Even if you don't, younger locals will come to you for practising their English. You will hear about their lives and their country with an amazing evening at the park. Don't fall in the trap of card games or visiting pubs though.

Young couples often sneak for a bit of privacy here, sitting on their motorbikes. Weeks before Tet, the lunar New Year, the park is full of colors, with a flower market offering typical flowers, including yellow chrysanthemums, mai trees and miniature kumquat trees. You should check it out. You will also find dragons and other awesome made from fruit and flowers. Great souvenir to take home, right?

  • Dine at a Bonsai river cruise

Experience the unique Bonsai river cruise. You can even take a dinner at the front deck of this traditional dragon boat and watch all the lights of Ho Chi Minh City. You can order even 7 courses to chew on while you enjoy the city views and lights. Usually a traditional dance performance by locals is something you might not expect.

For one of the great activities in Ho Chi Minh City you can bring your loved ones. A walk on the deck while passing other boats will get both of you mesmerized. The lights of the city and other boats with incredible city views from the river are a must see! The entire 2 hours will last forever as a memory.

  • Enjoy a dinner with locals in their home

How amazing would it be to enrich your holiday experience with a real home cooked dinner? Instead of having a meal at the local tourist restaurant, Withlocals offers you the opportunity to join a local family for a home based dinner experience. Taste the ingredients of amazing home cooked food, and get an experience you will never forget!

  • Cooking Workshops

Hosts prepare at their kitchen authentic Vietnamese special dishes. Unforgettable dinner experience in Ho Chi Minh City is guaranteed. All ingredients are fresh and picked daily by the host, or both of you together! Straight from local markets, the dishes are cooked with unique recipes passed from the host's grandmother. Better eat all food, you don't want to make the grandmother angry.

Wonderful local experience

It was truly a privilege to be hosted by Tu and his family for dinner in their family home. The 15km journey from our central hotel to the Nha Binh district during peak hour HCMC traffic was an experience in itself. We were greeted by Tu and his family and shared an unforgettable evening meal of seafood hotpot, a local specialty. Over the next two hours Tu shared stories of his life and te local culture. His family were so welcoming and generous. We leaned so much and will forever remember the experience.

What an amazing experience with Elise and her mum. They were both so welcoming, I felt like part of the family. The spring rolls we made are the best I’ve ever eaten and my only regrets is I couldn’t stay for longer to cook Pho. I highly recommend any experience with this awesome duo.

Amazing food experience

We did the shopping and cooking tour with Elise and her Mum . It was absolutely amazing . Such a privilege to be welcomed into Elise’s home. Elise was such a wealth of knowledge on local food and cooking traditions. Her mother was warm and welcoming and the memories of our day together will last a lifetime. We learned how to shop and cook like locals ….and came home with an absolutely delicious recipe for traditional pancakes .

For the Love Of Spring Rolls…

My husband and I love spring rolls, so when we stumbled across Elise’s private spring roll class and found ourselves with a few extra hours to spare, well…it was destiny! From the minute we signed up Elise was super friendly and helpful: she offered to answer any questions we might have about HCMC, make recommendations for food, and even book restaurant reservations if we needed help. So sweet! We met at a local supermarket in her neighborhood and as we shopped for ingredients she taught us about how food is integrated into the local culture. Very interesting. Then we walked a few short blocks to her family home where we were greeted warmly by her amazing mom and adorable dog. We sat at the dining table and started cooking right away, mostly chopping and grating, though I was “fired” from the latter because my grated radishes weren’t up to mom’s standards. That and she did it three times faster than me. LOL Once all the ingredients were assembled we rolled…and we rolled…and we rolled some more. There were only two of us but I swear we made 50 spring rolls! I was in heaven! Her mom then took them into the kitchen and showed us how to fry them. She made it look so easy, using chopsticks to fit far more in the fry pan than I thought possible. In no time at all we were stuffing our faces with the most delicious spring rolls you can imagine, wrapped in fresh lettuce and herbs with a homemade dipping sauce to impart even more flavor. We washed them down with local beer and somehow made room for fresh fruit for dessert. Oh, they also offered us some local sticky-rice desserts wrapped in banana leaves and stuffed with coconut, mung bean, etc. Heavenly! It was a fabulous few hours and we walked away fat and soooo happy! Elise, big thanks to you and your mom for one of the highlights of our time in HCMC! If you love spring rolls, you’d be crazy not to take this class!
