I'm a German-American from Maine, who arrived in Heidelberg in the late 1970s with the sole purpose of studying geology. After earning my master's degree and later a PhD, I often contemplated leaving the city, but its charm kept me rooted. Nearly 50 years on, Heidelberg continues to surprise me with new discoveries daily, its rich history adding depth to its allure.

I consider myself fortunate to have explored some of the world's most magnificent destinations in the early '70s, before the surge of mass tourism: from South America and Southeast Asia to Europe and the USA, each place left a lasting impression on me.

Nowadays, instead of extensive globetrotting, I have the pleasure of encountering hundreds of fascinating individuals each week right at my doorstep. Living beneath the iconic castle ruins of Heidelberg, I serve as a tour guide, sharing tales of bygone glory alongside the vibrancy of modern city life.

I visited Heidelberg 41 years ago with some high school mates and we had a great time ….mostly staring at the end of a mug of beer. This time, my wife and I decided to book a three hour tour of the castle and hidden gems of Old Town with Daniel through Withlocals and so glad we did. Daniel was born in US but the son of a military man so he moved around a lot but has lived in Heidleberg for over sixty years. He showed us the castle and all the backstory…tremendously interesting and worth the trip up the hill and the $11 ticket. Somehow Daniel covered 800 years of castle-history in about 90 minutes…fascinating. Then we headed down the hill to learn a little more about the town. We covered the churches and battles between Catholics and Protestants, the student jail, a typical Heidleberg families home/office, the old bridge and even learned how the regulated the size of a proper pretzel circa 1500. Daniel is a terrific guy and a gracious host in the town he is so very proud of and rightly so. Inside Heidleberg

Daniel ist ein sehr freundlicher und erfahrener Guide in Heidelberg. Er beschränkt sich nicht nur auf die reinen geschichtlichen Ereignisse und Jahreszahlen, sondern weiß immer noch ein wenig mehr über die Personen. Er hat uns viele interessante Geschichten erzählt, die uns Heidelberg definitiv nähergebracht haben. Und wenn man noch die eine oder andere Frage beantworten kann, kommt man mit einer Tasche voll Gummibärchen nach Hause! Wir würden Daniel sofort wieder buchen. Danke für einen sehr interessanten Nachmittag in meiner Geburtsstadt :-)Sympathischer und erfahrener Guide
