I'm Jelena, a 33-year-old visual artist from Montenegro. Though I officially moved to Lisbon in 2022, my Lisbon story began back in 2016 when I did an Erasmus exchange at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FBAUL). It was—and still is—the only place outside of my country where I truly felt at home. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours listening to Portuguese radio, diving into the history, language, and culture of Portugal, visiting Lisbon as often as I could, and doing my best to stay connected with it… until one day, six years later, I bought a one-way ticket. And yes, I did it! Here I am, living in Alfama, the second oldest neighborhood in Europe, right in the heart of Lisbon.
Today, I’m also the proud mother of a beautiful baby boy, António Dušan. My partner (his father) is Portuguese, and he’s shared many stories, hidden places, and gastronomic secrets with me. He has taught me so much about the culture of Portugal and Lisbon, especially regarding Fado music (he’s a classical guitarist, performs Fado, and is a vinyl collector of this genre).
As for my background, I graduated in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cetinje, Montenegro, in 2020. Before that, I gained experience as a tourist guide as part of the program at the High School of Tourism and Management. My artistic journey is diverse and began early in my life—as a professional dancer, performer, painter, art teacher, assistant in a children’s theater school, and even as the main character in a tribute project to Amy Winehouse, among many others.
Another lifelong passion of mine is languages, which is why I’m here—trying to connect all of my passions: my love for Lisbon, the arts, storytelling, and of course, my love for food!
As your tour guide, I’ll do my best to make your walk unique, sharing everything I’ve discovered as a local and with the locals.
